Honda to Close European Design Studio

(Automobilemag.com) Honda's European design studio in Offenbach, Germany, will be closing its doors next month as the Japanese automaker continues to search for ways to reduce costs.

Offenbach, located just outside of Frankfurt, is home to Honda's European R&D headquarters. The studio allowed Honda to design vehicles tailored for European consumers, and was responsible for both automotive and motorcycle designs. Motorcycle efforts will likely be transfered to a Honda studio in Rome, Italy, while automotive designs will be moved to Japan.

Honda's U3-X unicycle really for robots


(CNET.COM) Honda on Wednesday unveiled the U3-X, a stool with a unique directional wheel system that allows it to travel diagonally, as well as right, left, forward, and backward.

It's basically a robotic unicycle.

The device is able to readjust itself so that instead of riders having to constantly balance themselves, the robotic unicycle does the compensating.

Honda to Sell Battery Car in U.S.

(WSJ) Honda Motor Co. will likely launch an all-electric car in the U.S. in a few years, according to executives familiar with the matter, as rising interest in fuel efficiency prompts increasing interest in battery-powered vehicles.

According to company executives, the Tokyo-based auto maker plans to make the foray cautiously, and is likely to limit the availability of the new car, perhaps to a region within the U.S. The specific time frame was unclear.

The executives said Honda is expected to display at next month's Tokyo auto show a prototype of the battery car it plans to launch in the U.S. The knowledgeable executives said Honda is also considering selling the all-electric battery car in Japan.

Honda spent $623K in 2Q lobbying on auto issues

(AP) WASHINGTON -- American Honda Motor Co. spent $623,041 lobbying on the Cash for Clunkers program, hydrogen fuel cells and other automotive issues during the second quarter, according to a regulatory filing.

American Honda, the U.S. arm of the No. 2 Japanese automaker, also lobbied on legislation that would provide safety standards for alerting the blind to quiet vehicles, such as hybrids and electric cars.

Honda's Production Falls for Fifth Month on Lower Auto Demand

April 23 (Bloomberg) -- Honda Motor Co., Japan's second- largest automaker, cut production 38 percent last month as sales in the U.S., Japan and Europe slumped.

Output fell to 215,773 vehicles in March, the Tokyo-based automaker said in a statement today. Exports declined 58 percent to 22,497 units. For the year ended March, production slid 9.6 percent to 3.57 million, the first drop in 12 years.
