Manhunt for Man Who Tortured and Sexual Assaulted Girlfriend

Los Angeles: A manhunt is under way as Los Angeles police search for a man who beat, tortured and sexually assaulted his girlfriend on October 31, 2009, in South Los Angeles.
HerreraMiguel Angel1.jpgPolice are looking for 30-year-old Miguel Angel Herrera of Los Angeles. He is described as Hispanic, black hair, brown eyes and was last seen driving a Nissan, Titan pick-up truck license plate number 8-K-5-5-4-6-9.

At around 9:00 p.m., Herrera's girlfriend showed up at his apartment located in the 1100 block of West 41st Place. Once inside the apartment, he and the woman became involved in a heated argument about her being late. Detectives say Herrera became angry and restrained the woman. He then subjected to torture her by punching, cutting her with a knife and striking her multiple times with an electrical cord. During the attack, Herrera poured acid on the victim's face and sexually assaulted her. Afterwards, he let the woman drive off and followed her in his pick-up truck. The victim was able to elude the suspect's vehicle and drove to her family's house.

A family member drove the victim to Newton Division Police Station. An ambulance was summoned and the woman was taken to a local hospital where she was treated and released.

"This incident appears to be an isolated incident and it is believed that it's not related to any other assaults in the area," said Detective Eloy Ochoa. Police however, are requesting the

A Los Angeles police officer who used a knife and a gun to threaten a restaurant patron on the Redondo Beach pier was sentenced Tuesday to four years, four months in prison.

David Woon Chong, 39, had previously pleaded guilty to one assault count, and added a no contest plea of making a criminal threat before he was sentenced.

Chong was off duty when he got into a dispute with two fellow diners at Old Tony's restaurant on March 15, 2008.

The 10-year department veteran used a knife to threaten one man, then left. However, he returned a short time later, kicked foot out of the man's hand and pointed the .45 caliber Glock semiautomatic handgun at his head.

He was arrested as he drove out of the parking garage, and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11, above the state's legal limit of 0.08.

While at a rehabilitation program, he was arrested again for threatening a man during a treatment session.

LAPD crime map far from complete

| | Comments (1) |
What struck me as the most impressive part of this L.A. Times report is that these reporters had the time and resources to investigate such a massive undertaking. What they found is that the Los Angeles Police Department's much-touted public crime map omitted about 40 percent of the city's serious crimes - going back about six months.

Crime hits home for one Breeze staffer

| | Comments (1) |

Daily Breeze Assistant City Editor Josh Grossberg was victimized. Here's his story:

Somebody broke into my house yesterday and took some things of little monetary value, but were very important to me.

How did they get in? I left the back door open for the half hour I was gone.

It was trash day and I knew rain was coming, so I wanted to get the bins out early. I left the door open because I did only half of the trash cans and was planning to do the rest when I got home.

In other words, I was stupid. And some idiot criminal who has no regard for other people's belongings got lucky.
