QUESTION: What was up in Harbor City -- and more

| | Comments (0) |
QUESTION:  There was a lot of commotion near 255th Street and Bellporte (Sunday) morning. I had a scanner on and heard 5 suspects were in custody and the driver was outstanding. Torrance PD also called for back up with Redondo Beach. They also had police dogs etc. Do you know what happened? Thanks

ANSWER: The commotion was at the end of a pursuit from The National Sports Grill parking lot on Sepulveda Boulevard in Torrance to 255th Street and President Avenue in Harbor City.

The chase followed a 12:15 a.m. report that the driver struck a pedestrian in the restaurant's lot and took off. Along the way, he struck another vehicle, Torrance police Sgt Bernard Anderson said.

Police detained five people in the car, but the driver took off. Officers searched but could not locate him.

The person struck was not seriously hurt.

And P.S. If you wondered what the helicopter was doing over the south area of San Pedro this morning, it wasn't anything too major. They were looking for a tagger, who managed to slip out of sight.

BREAKING NEWS: LAPD surrounds apartment in San Pedro

| | Comments (0) |
This is all I know so far: Officers trying to catch an armed robbery suspect started following him about 10:30 this morning from an apartment in the 2000 block of Palos Verdes Drive North.

Apparently there was a chase. He abandoned his car and ran into an apartment in the 800 block of West 30th Street. He is refusing to come out.

LAPD tells me that besides being a robbery suspect, the guy is despondent over a breakup.

He is believed to be armed.

Don't know what he's suspected of robbing. We'll get more later  hopefully.

Redondo Beach police and other agencies just chased a car through the South Bay onto Palos Verdes Drive East, where the three suspects abandoned their car in Rancho Palos Verdes and ran.

A search is underway near Mustang Road. That's what the helicopter is doing.

I'm told the three suspects held up a mail carrier in Manhattan Beach, took some mail and sped away. A Redondo Beach officer spotted them and the chase was on.

We'll have more when we can get it.

Suspected thief learns there's no bridge to Catalina

chasesuspect_1.jpgAn auto theft suspect who ran a red light and led police on a chase from Broadway and Gage in Los Angeles this morning kept driving west, even when he reached the ocean.

I don't know what was on his mind, but he flew straight into the drink at the Port of Los Angeles.

He stood shirtless on the top of the van for a moment and then swam around for 15 minutes before firefighters plucked him from the water and handed him over to LAPD.

Long before we ever knew about the real police chases they show on TV these days, the greatest pursuit to make its way through the South Bay is in the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds."

More than 90 cars are wrecked in the 40-minute movie chase that begins in Long Beach, heads over the Vincent Thomas Bridge, rides through Carson and into Torrance and Redondo Beach.

The acting is horrific, but most of the people in the low-budget flick are the producer's friends and family. Real cops and firefighters participated, along with Carson's mayor at the groundbreaking of the city's sheriff's station.

I remembering seeing this with my brother at the Americana 5 in Panorama City. I was 11 and it was awesome.

So here's a good portion of it in three parts. You'll see the bridge, the Harbor Freeway, the Goodyear Blimp and a couple of Torrance car dealerships:

BREAKING NEWS: Helicopters overhead means there's a chase

| | Comments (1) |
If you wondered what all those helicopters were doing flying over the South Bay just now, that was the TV media following some guy leading a chase from South Los Angeles.

It all started with him running a red light. Deputies tried to stop him, but he didn't want to stop. He raced at speeds up to 85 mph along the Harbor and Century freeways for quite a while, then made his way through Manhattan Beach and  Hermosa Beach into Redondo Beach, where he drove into a complex at Pacific Avenue and Harbor Drive and became trapped. (That's that little street that curves around next to Captain Kidd's restaurant toward Catalina Avenue.)

He ran from his car, but was quickly arrested.

The man had a female passenger with him. Deputies are looking into whether she was there of her own free will, or was kidnapped. Fox 11 has the video.  Video

We'll update it when they figure things out.
