BREAKING NEWS: Man shot dead in Wilmington

| | Comments (1) |
A 50-year-old man was shot to death early today in Wilmington, police said.

Eric Douglas, who might have been residing at a sober living house in southwest Los Angeles, was shot about 2:15 a.m. at Broad Avenue and F Street, Los Angeles police Detective Jim Perkins said.

Douglas was standing on the corner when two people approached him. Douglas ran. They fired numerous rounds at him, striking him.

Douglas collapsed. He was pronounced dead at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Police don't know the motive behind the slaying, but said it occurred near the Bonnie Lee Hotel, a known location where drug dealing occurs.

In 2007, former Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo filed suit against the hotel, charging that undercover Los Angeles police officers made repeated drug purchases on the site for years.

New body count blog launches

| | Comments (0) |

The LA Weekly last week launched its Murder was the Case blog. It's introductory paragraph says it aims to write about every homicide in the City of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Times took on a similar charge a couple years ago with its Homicide Report, which attempts to document every homicide in the County as reported by the Coroner's Department. The Times' blog proved very successful in its first year, and very tiring for it's original keeper. Now, it seems several people contribute.

coridesmond.jpgCori Desmond's father, Mark, is passing out bumper stickers asking for tips to help police find his daughter's killer.

Desmond has printed 100 bumper stickers that are being distributed to friends, family and businesses in Redondo Beach, the last place she was seen alive.

More will be available in another week. Desmond also is planning to purchase a billboard.

"I'm going to do what I'm going to do to help out in any way," Desmond said. "That's all I can do."

Cori Desmond was last seen on Feb. 15, leaving the Bac Street Lounge on Artesia Boulevard in Redondo Beach. Her Jeep was parked nearby.

Her body was found the next day in a bag at the side of a snowy road near Running Springs.
Investigators have not disclosed the cause of death, but said she appeared to suffer from blunt force trauma.

A Gardena man admitted Tuesday that he killed his sister, who was found dead on the kitchen floor of their family home, police said.

John Long Liu, 60, was taken into custody shortly after 1 p.m. at the house in the 1100 block of West 163rd Street, Gardena police Lt. Uikilifi Niko said.

Firefighters responded to the house regarding a woman not breathing and determined her to be dead, Niko said.

They then called police because they suspected foul play.

The victim, whose name was not immediately released, lived in the home with other adult relatives. She was in her late 50s.

Liu told officers he had killed his sister, Niko said. Liu was arrested on suspicion of murder and booked at the Gardena jail.

The cause of death was not immediately determined.

UPDATE: Theory on last week's San Pedro homicide

| | Comments (3) |
I just talked briefly with Los Angeles police Detective Jim Perkins. I didn't get much, but here is the deal so far on last Monday's homicide where Rufus Atchley is accused of killing Robert Banes on 11th Street:

"Part of what we've heard is the victim had disrespected one of (Atchley's) daughters," Perkins said.

The police don't know what this was about, however. Perkins said detectives have talked to Atchley's daughters and "none of them will admit to it."

Although Atchley had a record of prison and drug possession, the shooting was not during a drug deal.

Detectives believe Banes was near his Nissan Altima parked on the street. Atchley might have been driving by, saw him and stopped. They don't think he was lying in wait. They argued and Atchley shot him.

I also spoke today with one of Banes' closest friends who described him as a man who loved music and working at his job repairing railroad signals.

I'm told Banes' family is having a memorial service for him in San Pedro.

I'll be writing an update for the paper.

I received this today from Krystal Atchley, the daughter of San Pedro homicide suspect Rufus Atchley. He is suspected of killing Robert Justin Banes, 29, on 11th Street near Pacific Avenue on Monday, then fleeing to a house on 19th Street and triggering the daylong SWAT standoff.

He ultimately was arrested. I requested an interview with her, but she said she would only talk through e-mail. I declined. But here is her letter. I haven't changed anything. It is exactly as it came in:

"My name is Krystal Atchley & I'm Rufus Atchleys daughter. I would like the other side of the story to be heard as we all know there are two sides to a story. Today, the newspaper printed and wrote some actually true facts about my father, he is a loving, father & grandfather, however, he is not perfect and was battling a disease and was struggling with life.

I haven't been able to get much on this today, but a man was killed inside a Hawthorne smog check business last night.

From what I can tell, a gunman walked in to G & D Smog Check at 11862 S. Prairie Ave. at 6 p.m. and shot a man working there.

The Sheriff's Department is investigating the crime, but hasn't issued any statements yet.

*UPDATE: The Sheriff's Department has released nothing on this case and it's starting to look like that isn't going to happen.

All I know is this man's name is "Vicente," based on the "RIP Vicente" sign on his door. His neighbors said he was a nice guy.
