SAN FRANCISCO -- California's highest court agreed today to hear
several legal challenges to the state's new same-sex marriage ban, but refused to allow gay
couples to resume marrying until it rules on the measure's validity.

The California Supreme Court accepted three lawsuits seeking to nullify Proposition 8, a
voter-approved constitutional amendment that overruled the court's May decision legalizing gay marriage.

As is its custom when it takes up cases, the court did not elaborate on its decision.

Sheriff's homicide Lt. Dave Coleman told me today that the killings at a McDonald's

restaurant in Carson on Sunday were indeed a murder-suicide. (He killed her and then shot himself.)

The victim was identified as Krystina Reed, 31. The shooter was Stephen Lee Meriwether, 37. The pair apparently lived in the Long Beach area, but previously knew each other in Arizona, where they had a relationship.

Something went bad between them. It became deadly Sunday, but detectives had not figured out what exactly they argued about or why they were in Carson. The restaurant in on Central Avenue on the Compton border.

One thing investigators learned was Reed was set to get married in a week to someone other than Meriwether. Detectives planned to talk to the intended spouse.

On Sunday, they argued about something. She ran into the McDonald's to seek cover. He followed her to the back and committed the murder-suicide.

A story will appear in the Daily Breeze and dailybreeze.com.

Paul Osborn, 44, offered his "cheating, lying, adulterous, slag of a wife" to the highest bidder. Bids started at 1 pence and hit £500,100.

Wife Sharon, 43, denies an affair. Now the bobbies are investigating her husband for harassment.
