Torrance twin terror

| | Comments (2) |
One of these dogs belongs to my sister, the crazy dog lady of Torrance.

The other dog also belongs to my sister.

One of them is named Cosmo. The other is named Sherman. But it's beyond me to be able to tell which is which.

My sister claims to be able to tell them apart. And I assume the dogs can tell each other apart. But the rest of us will just have to guess.

Anyway, the two of you who read this bog (not including my sister) may recall a post I wrote several months ago about how Cosmo got into my sister's purse and ate a bottle of over-the-counter pain pills. I think it was Advil.

After spending days and days in the hospital, he began a slow recovery. As you can see by the picture, he seems to be feeling much better, whichever one he is.

My sister, the crazy dog lady of Torrance, had quite a scare the other day.

Actually, I tease her, but she dotes on her dogs more than anybody I know. Her pets are always well fed, groomed, loved, vaccinated and tended to by vets when necessary.

So what happened to her could happen to anybody. It involved her 12-year-old Samoyed named Cosmo. After 12 years, you kinda let your guard down with a dog, but Cosmo got into my sister's purse last week and the results were terrifying.

Here's what happened in her own words:

Very early Monday morning, Cosmo opened my purse and got a small container of Advil. He ate the Advil (10 maybe more). He has been at the emergency hospital at night and at his regular vet during the day.

They were able to have him throw up some of the pills, fed him charcoal and have been keeping him hydrated.  We think we got him to the hospital early enough and so far he seems to be doing well.

This morning when I picked him up from the Emergency vet, he was woo wooing.   And at his regular vet, he was begging for cookies.  We will know later this week if his kidney's have been affected by the Advil.

Cosmo is doing better. He's acting fine and the vet is optimistic about his prognosis. Final blood test results are coming tomorrow. Cosmo is due to come home in the next day or two.

How scary is this? My sister will do anything for her pets, but I'm sure she would rather have spent the money on something else, not to mention the emotional turmoil she went through.

Anyway, this story stands as a great reminder that no matter how well you think you know your pets, they're animals and they can get into trouble. It's important to always try to pay attention.

Hope you're back to your old self soon, Cosmo!

And here's a picture of him in healthier days.

Herd any good ones lately?

My sister's dog Sherman is a sled dog, so I'm not sure why she took it herding. But that's what she did. Sherman, as two or three of you know, is my sister's newest dog. He's a samoyed and I guess he's about 6 or 7 months old now. He and my dog Rocket took obedience class together. Sherman came in first. Rocket, well, he came in last place.

My sister, who lives in Torrance, also has another samoyed named Cosmo and a husky named Jenny.

Anyway, here's Sherman chasing some goats around.

Dogs of Los Angeles

There are 1,263 chihuahuas named Princess living in Los Angeles County, making it the most common name-breed combination of all dogs.

What's particularly amusing to me about that is that while I was between dogs, my landlord parked his dog in my backyard for about a year. Yes, she was a chihuahua named Princess -- not exactly the kind of dog you want living in your house when you're a single, middle-aged man, if you know what I mean.

Here are some other fun things I learned on this really cool database the LA Times put togehter:

  •  There are 164 dogs named Rocket
  • There are 56 bluetick coonhounds.
  • There are 1,985 dogs living in my zip code (one of which is a bluetick coonhound named Rocket.

There are plenty of other fascinating things you can find on the database, which has really dog-computer.jpg   clever categories like spaced-themed names (Rocket, Comet, Cosmo), dogs named after celebrities (there's an Alec Baldwin out there somewhere) and dogs named after food (Hello, Spaghetti!)

You can mix and match your searches. You can see how many of your favorite  breed live in your neighborhood, stuff like that.

But I should warn you: It's addictive.

Jenny and Cosmo

I got an e-mail today from my sister Darlene, or as she's known in the family, "The Crazy Dog Lady of Torrance."

She informs me that her dog Jenny, a sweet, skunk-chasing husky turned 13 this week. Her other dog, a snowball of a samoyed named Cosmo will be turning 12 next month.

She had a third dog, another samoyed named Piper, but Piper died last year :(

But she's talking about getting another one. Those dogs shed enough to cover the city in white fur.

Here they are. Happy birthday you guys. How old are you in human years? jenny.jpg cosmo.jpg

And here's a video of Rocket and Jenny playing. Cosmo doesn't like to play.
