More than 2,400 hundreds dogs came to Long Beach last month to take part in a big, fancy dog show. My dog wasn't among them.

If you didn't make it to the show, now's your chance to catch it on television.

The 8th annual AKC/Eukanuba Natioanl Chapionship will air at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 on Animal Planet.

Hosted by Bob Goen, this high-profile dog show features invitees from the country's top 25 dogs in each AKC-recognized breed. Invitations to dogs are based on breed points accumulated over a set period. In addition, every dog awarded Best in Show at a licensed or member AKC all-breed dog show during the same time period was extended an automatic invitation to enter the competition. Dog show insider Lee Arnold and American Kennel Club judge Edd Bivin also assist with the play-by-play.

How can you go wrong when you've got some of that Edd Bivin magic working for you?

The winner... by a nose

It's not that I don't like dog shows, it's that I really don't get them. You get a good-looking puppy and it wins a bunch of prizes. And don't get me started on those cutesy names.

I don't think there's anything wrong with them -- the dogs seem to have a good enough time. And my sister, the crazy dog lady of Torrance would disagree. She enjoys them and her dogs have competed.

But the winner of the Long Beach dog show on Sunday is a real cutey

Every dog owner in San Pedro has heard of it.

"Been down to Trumps?" they'll ask.

They don't mean the golf course. What they're referring to is a stretch of isolated beach near Donald Trump's golf course in Rancho Palos Verdes.

Donald Trump doesn't own this pristine piece of land. And he doesn't really strike me as a dog person anyway -- unless you count the one he wears on his head.

It's the worst-kept secret among dog walkers, but it's a secret nonetheless because, well, it's probably not exactly legal -- government officials tend to frown on dogs running unfettered on local beaches.

It's perfect for people like me. Not only is it fairly close to home, but the last time I took the dog to the stretch of dog-friendly sand in Long Beach, he got halfway to Mexico before I finally caught him. A row of pylons signal the end of the dog beach there, but it's not like I expect my dog to know what a pylon is.

Anyway, the local beach is great. It's secluded. It's mostly surrounded by steep cliffs and rocks, so dogs have a hard time escaping.

The bad news? Well, it's a fairly steep climb getting up and down. That's not really bad news, but if you're not up to it, you'll have a hard time making the journey. And since it's so isolated, there's always a rotting seal carcass or two to make the place smell bad.

So how do you get there?  I'm no snitch. And I don't want to abet lawbreaking so brazenly. But e-mail me and I'll fill you in on the details.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
