When good chimps go bad

| | Comments (1) |

Sure, we all think it'd be cool to have a pet monkey, but it's one of those ideas that's probably left in the realm of fantasy.

It's a hard lesson to learn, but one that a lady in Connecticut learned this week when her pet chimp nearly killed her.

The animal weighed 200 pounds, so maybe the trick is to get smaller monkeys.

The story ends badly for the chimp.

NEW YORK, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Police shot and killed a 200-pound (90-kg) chimpanzee that had once starred in television commercials after the ape nearly killed its owner's friend and attacked a police cruiser.

The victim, Charla Nash, 55, was in very critical condition from the biting and mauling attack on Monday, said Captain Richard Conklin, a spokesman for police in Stamford, Connecticut, a New York City suburb. Her injuries were life threatening, he said on Tuesday.

Owner Sandra Herold, 70, tried to stop her rampaging pet, Travis, by stabbing him with a butcher knife and hitting him with a shovel but the chimpanzee fended off the attack and then stormed a police car that had responded to the scene, Conklin said.

Florida, lock your doors!

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Wildlife officials said a rhesus monkey known to throw feces when mad is on the loose in Tampa Bay. Authorities have been trying to capture the primate since Tuesday afternoon, but it managed to evade a bucket truck and tranquilizer dart.

Gary Morse with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the adult male is thought to have escaped from an unlicensed source. It was last seen in Clearwater.

The monkey is not considered dangerous.

So cute you'll barf

Look, I enjoy pictures of baby monkeys picking their nose as much as the next guy. Baby hippos? Nothing cuter.

But when you put a bunch of infant animals on the same page, it makes me feel a little sick in the stomach. But if you like a little saccharine with your coffee, then the Web site Zoo Borns is for you.

Monkey + Segway = fun!

| | Comments (0) |

Ok, we can all agree there's nothing funnier than a chimp wearing human clothes riding around in a Segway. But here's my question: How come videos from Japan always have people in the corner of the screen laughing and pointing?

Who are these people?

Monkeys vs. babies

They're small, cute and throw poop --  the difference between baby monkeys and baby humans is pretty tiny.

But monkeys don't grow up and join gangs, go to college, pierce their noses, get tribal tattoos or other obnoxious things humans do these days.

I was sitting here at work just now when a commercial came on for a show called "The Outsiders. "It's going to be on at 10 p.m. Tuesday. That's pretty much all I know about it, but the premise of it seems to be that a lady realized that monkeys are less trouble than humans, so she adopted a monkey.

The monkey eats at the table, drinks out of a glass, goes to the playground and wears dresses (which I suppose makes it a girl monkey.)

This is the best link I could find and I don't know how long it's going to last. It's for the Primetime series. If you poke around, you'll find a video called "substitute children." That's the one about the lady who is raising a monkey.

OK, enough with the monkeys. I'm tired of them. No more Monday Monkeys from me. If I find a good video, I'll post it, but I can't handle this kind of responsibility.

For our final episode we offer a dog and a monkey duking it out. Guess who wins?

Actually, this just kinda looks like a normal night at my house.

After losing its offspring, a monkey in India has started looking after a puppy.

The pair look quite happy together, but it's not they are not the first animals to make unusual companions.

In September last  year a 12-week-old macaque monkey made best friends with a pigeon in an animal sanctuary in China.

Also in 2007 a pig adopted a tiger cub and raised him along with her piglets when his mother could not feed him.

Honestly, the puppy doesn't look thrilled by the arrangement.

OK, how cute is this? Makes you want to run out and get a monkey, doesn't it?

Monkey Monday Madness

People on talk radio are always going on about how conservative actors are shunned by Hollywood. Or something like that.

I don't want to get into that discussion because it's ridiculous. I only mention it because a few weeks ago, we lost a man who was not only a beloved actor, but also a well-known conservative.

For any nerdy kid, Charlton Heston was the beloved star of three great 1970s science fiction movies: "Soylent Green," "The Omega Man," and, of course, "Planet of the Apes."

He was also in the first sequel, "Beneath the Planet of the Apes," where he destroys the planet Eearth and creates one heckuva time-travel paradox. But he only made a cameo in that movie.

I thought Heston was a great guy. I had the good fortune to meet him about 10 years ago and he was very nice to me. And so I dedicate today's monkey video to him.

BUT, this blog isn't just about monkeys, it's about monkey madness, and so I present a mash-up from from "Planet of the Apes" with what may be the funniest five minutes from TV's "The Simpsons." They did a send-up to the Heston movie. This clip combines the best of both.

Monday Monkey Madness

Last week we ran a clip of monkeys wearing hippie clothes and playing in a band. We thought it was hilarious, but a reader named I Like Toast (well, who doesn't?) sent us a letter saying there was nothing funny at all about monkeys wearing wigs.

In an effort to appease Ms. Toast, this week we offer something of a counterpoint. Humans dressed like monkeys!

Why this clip is funny, I have no idea. But it has been delighting of comedy fans since  it first appeared in the 1950s.

The Nairobi Trio, as the band is called, featured not much more than three people wearing monkey masks, hats and overcoats. It was the brainchild of television pioneer and and comedy genius Ernie Kovacs.

The monkey in the middle is apparently Kovacs himself. The one at the piano is his wife, Edie Adams. The identity of this ape on the left changed, but it is known that both Jack Lemmon and Frank Sinatra participated in the stunt at different times.

Monkey Monday!

I bet there isn't a single wild monkey living anywhere in the South Bay. Which is too bad because what's funnier than a monkey doing some sort of human activity?  Put a chimp in a pair of suspenders or give him a cigarette and the laughs are just about guaranteed. it's pure comedy gold, I tell ya.

What better way to start off the week?

My colleague Walter Hammerwold and I came up with an idea. He was going to put a picture of a monkey in the paper for me to post, but I couldn't find the link. So I came up with Plan B.

Speaking of links (the beauty of that segue will become apparent shortly), here's one for you to gawk at in awe as you settle in on a Monday morning.

Well, it appears that animals can do more than paint. It seems they are adept at many of the performing arts too.

From the people who brought you the painting elephant, pig and horse (me), here's a look at a walrus dancing like Michael Jackson.

If anybody finds a video of a monkey that can write, please keep it to yourself. My fragile sense of self couldn't take the insult. And anyway, my bosses are always looking for ways to save money. A writing monkey? Can he edit too? Shoot, instead of paying him, all we'd have to do is feed him are whisky and cigarettes.

So Elephants CAN paint!

| | Comments (0) |

Yesterday, we ran an item here at South Bay Pets about an elephant that could paint. We were scoffed at and ridiculed by our colleagues.

One wag even went to the Snopes urban myth Web site to debunk the video, but the search was inconclusive. Well, the good folks at Snopes did a little research and determined that the elephant video was real! Haw haw to all you skeptics. (Yes, I'm talking to you, FS!)

My colleague Larry Altman, the busiest man in journalism, did a little research of his own and discovered that if you search You Tube, you can find videos of virtually any animal painting. They aren't as amazing as the pachyderm artist, but they still got a lot of heart.

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls.
