I got this e-mail from local dog lover Diane Bassett. And yes, that's her real last name. I've met her.

She has a rescue dog that she things would make a perfect pet for the Obama family.

Since Diane works in public relations, she knows how to write a press release:

Palos Verdes dog trainer Diane Bassett has contacted Barak Obama to encourage him to adopt a local puppy named Marcy rescued by the Redondo Beach nonprofit Rover Rescue.

Upon hearing that the first family is intending to adopt a puppy in need of a home, Bassett immediately thought of a puppy she had been fostering for the past several weeks.

"She is a 10-month-old terrier mix who is affectionate, and adorable, and she doesn't shed." she explained. "She has her own blog with videos, photos, and training updates She's crate-trained, her basic obedience is coming along very well and I offered them free training support for her entire life. Bassett didn't feel that the dog's location in the south bay should be an issue for the family. "They have to take the whole country into account, not just Illinois.  Why should candidate dogs in California be excluded?"

Marcy's Web page can be viewed here.

"We have not heard back from him yet," she said, "but given the state of the economy he's inheriting, we've offered him a special Presidential discount on her adoption fee. He's going to need all the help he can get."

Sheltie needs a home

Last week when I was walking around the grounds at the dog show in Torrance, I bumped into Diane Bassett. Diane, who works at Little Company of Mary here in town is a big-time dog lover. (I'll let you write your own joke about Diane's last name)

Anyway, I just got an e-mail from her and she did something very clever. She's been fostering a sheltie and has been writing about it on a blog. The dog is now ready for a new home and she's looking for someone to adopt it. Here's what she has to say about him.

Basically, he's a purebred male Sheltie who needed a calm foster home to get him settled and trained and ready for his new home. Mission accomplished, and now he's ready to adopt out and he needs exposure. So I created a blog where people can not only get the 411 on him, but they can also learn about clicker training, and about how to gently integrate a new dog into their home.

Here's the link to Diane's site

And here's a picture of Einstein. Pretty cute guy. The best part is Diane is promising to give my dog a cookie of he finds a home. Get on it!

Dogs save baby

Ok, dogs save babies all the time. That's not what makes this story so earth shattering. What's amazing is which dogs did the saving. Check out the photo accompanying the story. This guy should win a Pulitzer.

Next time your dog complains about not being allowed on the furniture, tell it the story of Snickers the cocker spaniel.

This sounds like its the plot from a cheesy movie, but it really happened. The good news is that Snickers is now not only living in comfort, he's also become a celebrity.

In his eight months of puppyhood, the brown-and-white cocker spaniel has:

  • spent 95 days adrift on a 48-foot boat;

  • survived four months on Fanning Island after being abandoned by his original owners, who were rescued by a cargo vessel that couldn't allow the pup on board.
  •

You can read the whole harrowing story here. Then tell your lazy dog to stop his stupid whining.

    Pup rescued by helicopter

A dog fell off an embankement and landed some 200 feet down a ravine this morning near Bel Air.

Poor dog must have been terrified, but a team of Los Angeles firefighters soon showed up in a helicopter to save it.

Emergency crews were sent to North Bel Air Road about 7:30 a.m. after the owner of the 100-pound animal reported the problem, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The dog was placed in a harness and was hoisted to safety, accompanied by a firefighter,
shortly before 9 a.m., Humphrey said.

    Yay!

Here's a video of the dramatic rescue. It's on the KTLA Web site. You'll have to click on the video link to watch it. It shouldn't be too hard to find. Good ole firefighters. And although this is a pet blog, we'd like to give a shout out to Brian Humphrey, the best PIO in the business.
