If you ask me, being upset about horses in Rolling Hills Estates is like being mad about sand in  Redondo Beach or guys with beards in Lawndale.

I kid. I kid. Actually, the problem isn't horses. It's the people that horses attract. My colleague Melissa Pamer has written a story about neighbors in the, um, equestrian seaside community, who are at loggerheads over a stable that brings in youth groups.

Here's the start of the story, but you should go read the whole thing.

A half-century ago, when Pat Murnane was growing up on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, it seemed like practically everybody had horses.
He recalls riding dusty trails - not to mention skateboarding down steep hills and swimming in backyard pools - and thinks of what a paradise for children the Hill was back then.
Now, the former house painter from Manhattan Beach is trying to re-create one aspect of that experience for local youngsters who have grown up in an environment where the equestrian spirit has waned.
"I always wanted to do trail rides. That was my dream," said Murnane, 58. "This is the nicest place to ride anywhere."
Murnane's Rolling Hills Estates-based trail-riding business, Wagon Wheel Ranch, has steadily attracted local youth groups and visiting tourists since it opened several years ago.
His rides are popular among his clients, according to letters submitted to the city on his behalf.
But not with some of the neighbors.
"If we thought for one minute that our street would be subject to strangers from all over coming and going, we would have moved elsewhere," said Jack Epstein at a City Council meeting last week. "It's a matter of privacy."

Lost dog no longer lost

| | Comments (0) |

I just received word that Rudy, the missing dog has been found and returned to his owners.

He turned up at the Palos Verdes Estates City Hall of all places.

I just spoke with a woman who lost her dog last night in Rolling Hills Estates.

I lost a dog once and it was one of the worst things that ever happened to me. If anybody has any information, please call her immediately.

Her dog, Rudy, is 14 years old. He's sweet but scared. And he needs to take medication for pain. He was last seen on Masongate Drive on Wednesday night.

Rudy is a black sheltie-lab mix with brown feet and a white chest.

Call 310-291-6023.

Complicating matters is the fact that the family has only been in California a short time and the dog doesn't know his way around. And his tags are from Washington State. The phone number on the tags doesn't work anymore.

And please let this serve as a reminder for all of us how vital it is to keep your pets' information up to date!

Here's the link to a picture and the contact information. Lostdog.pdf

Horse nutrition will be the featured topic at the Empty Saddle Club on Thursday Feb. 19.

All are welcome.

From the e-mail I received:

Dont miss this informative evening when our speakers will discuss good nutrition for the young horse, the competing horse and the senior equine.  They will present products that can make your horse look like a show horse all the time, introduce fish oil and its many great qualities (I thought horses were herbifores?) and scientifically proven feed to keep your horses engine running at maximum performance levels (that is if you need it). You will enjoy a DVD presentation on nutrition. And a great time for questions and answers from the experts.  Come join us!  PS Triple Crown provided the feed for our US Olympic Team.

This is a press release I got about an emergency hosemanship clinic being sponsored by the Cowboy Boot Camp. The event is being held at 3 p.m. Saturday Jan. 10 at 4 Sunnyfield Drive in Rolling Hills Estates.

For reservations or more info, call Jim Moore at 310-377-8834.

Despite their size and weight, horses are nature's delicate creatures and if you're a horse owner, or someone who's planning for horse ownership, you should be prepared for an equine emergency.

"Unfortunately, bad things sometimes happen when you're on the trail or when you and your horse are at a remote location or at a time when a vet might not be available," explained Jim Moore of Cowboy Boot Camp.  "A horse depends upon his human companion to make him feel better or possibly even save his life."

  • How to respond if your horse colics or has other abdominal problems.
  • How to care for a laceration, puncture wound and eye trauma.
  • How to wrap a leg in case of emergency.
  • What important data your vet needs to know prior to arrival.
  • Do you know how to take and what a horse's temperature should be?
  • What contents should every equine emergency kit include?

These emergency treatment & step-by-step procedure topics and more will be covered and discussed at the upcoming Cowboy Boot Camp horsemanship clinic in Palos Verdes.  Conducted by Los Angeles County-based equine veterinary practitioner, Dr. Sylvia Greenman, D.V.M., participants will get an opportunity for a "hands on" demonstration on how to respond quickly and confidently to equine emergency situations.

"Horse emergencies can be a challenging and emotionally charged situation for owners," said Dr. Greenman. "However, with preparedness clinics such as these, problems can be reduced by educating owners about first aid procedures."

For more information about this clinic as well as other Cowboy Boot Camp horsemanship seminars and events, visit their Web site or contact Dr. Sylvia Greenman.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Horseman's Association is hosting "A Bit of Advice," at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Empty Saddle Club.

Presented by Cowboy Boot Camp's Lori Barnett, the event will teach how bits are used to gain control of your horse.  Horses differ in their breed, training, age and disciplines so it only makes sense that every bit is not suited for every mount and the bit you use now can change as circumstances change.
horsetoy.jpg
This from a note I received: As horseman, our goal is for a safe and pleasurable ride with a mount that is relaxed and willing to do what is asked of him.  The type of bit and how  it's used is a very important tool in achieving this goal.  Join us for this informative and interesting demonstration at our general meeting.  Even if you're not a PVPHA member, you'll enjoy this clinic.

Horsey business on the hill

| | Comments (0) |

The annual city celebration for Rolling Hills Estates will be held on Sept. 20.

horse.jpgAccording to my undercover sources (an e-mail my sister sent me), the event will be held at the Empty Saddle Club located at 39 Empty Saddle Road.

According to my sources, "Lots of horsey stuff going on."

Sometimes blogging is about well-crafted stories about my pets.

Horse-tack-supplies.jpgSometimes it's just about cutting and pasting. I got this mysterious message from my sister, who, in addition to being a crazy dog lady is also a crazy horse lady.

I have no idea what "tack" is, but there's going to be a huge sale of used tack on Saturday at Ernie Howlett Park in Rolling Hills Estates.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The park is located at 25851 Hawthorne Blvd.

A letter writer complained to me that this blog is too dogcentric. Her actual words were far more dismissive, but I got the point.

Well, I'd like to inform Miss Busybody that South Bay Pets is now the third most popular site in the entire Internet, a fact I just now made up. In truth, we only have three readers -- two shut-ins and my sister.

But alert readers will know that in addition to owning the Loudest Dog in the South Bay, I also own the Most Obnoxious Cat in the South Bay. Riff, as I mentioned once before, has a map of Idaho on his chin.

More about him later, but there are other mammals to write about.

For instance, this Saturday, there's going to be a horse ride in Rolling Hills Estates.

I forget that that while most of us are busy facing traffic on Lomita Boulevard or 190th Street , there is a vibrant horse community here on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Just today, I was driving along Palos Verdes Drive North and I saw a man wearing an actual cowboy hat. And he wasn't wearing it ironically or anything.

But as for this Saturday's thingy, this is an e-mail I got,

The best part of all is they're serving pancakes!

Equestrians are invited to join us for the annual Mayor's Breakfast Ride, which will be held on Saturday, May 10.

The one-hour ride begins at at 8 a.m. at Chandler Park, just west of City Hall at Censhaw Boulevard and Palos Verdes drive North.

The event ends at the Scout Pancake Breakfast in Ernie Howlett Park.

Scout Parents, Inc. sponsors the annual Pancake Breakfast to benefit local scouting programs. Pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee, juice, and milk will be served in Howlett Park from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Breakfast tickets are $5 the day of the event, but may be purchased in advance from scouts or at City Hall for only $3.00. For more information about the trail ride or the pancake breakfast, please call Andy Clark, Community Services Director,at 310 377-1577, ext. 109

About the Bloggers

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
