The other dog also belongs to my sister.
One of them is named Cosmo. The other is named Sherman. But it's beyond me to be able to tell which is which.
My sister claims to be able to tell them apart. And I assume the dogs can tell each other apart. But the rest of us will just have to guess.
Anyway, the two of you who read this bog (not including my sister) may recall a post I wrote several months ago about how Cosmo got into my sister's purse and ate a bottle of over-the-counter pain pills. I think it was Advil.
After spending days and days in the hospital, he began a slow recovery. As you can see by the picture, he seems to be feeling much better, whichever one he is.

Wind blowing through your hair, surf crashing in the distance. Things doesn't get any better than this.
This photo was sent to me by my sister, the crazy dog lady of Torrance. She forwarded it from a friend of hers, whose name I can't find.
But the dog's name is Frannie.
And when you look at the picture, you realize how good life can be when you're a dog.

Known to many as the lady who was chased by birds in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds," actress Tippi Hedren is also a lifelong conservationist and big-cat rescuer.
I know this because I met her once a few years ago when she brought a sick tiger to a vet in Lawndale.
She called me a few days later to thank me for the article I wrote, something I crowed all over
the office about for days. (Get it? Crowed?)
Well, Tippi (I can call her that) will be in Torrance on Monday to meet with the South Bay Bird Society.

The only AKC licenced all breed dog show held in the South Bay will take place Saturday and Sunday in Torrance.
Hundreds of dogs will be there, including some breeds I've never heard of. including a dandia dinmont terror and three kinds of cocker spaniels.
There's also going to be a bluetick coonhound there. The only bluetick coonhound I've seen up close is my own, so it'll be interesting to see what another one looks like. I'm going to be there writing a story for Sunday's paper.
The event takes place starting at 8 a.m. both days at North High School, 3620 W. 182nd St.
Admission is free, but parking fees will be donated to the school's athletic department and band.
You can find the detailed schedules here.
If you see me, stop by and say hi.
As we reported Sunday, an elderly woman suffered serious injuries when the home in the 2900 block of Dalmead was destroyed by fire.
But this e-mail was forwarded from a block captain, asking people to not only help the family, but also the family pet, which was also seriously injured.
This is the e-mail:
Thankfully, the family survived the horrific fire, but their home was destroyed and they LOST EVERYTHING!. The family dog, Gemini, barely survived. The fire department carried Gemini out of the home and neighbors came together to resuscitate the dog. The fire department then stepped in and gave Gemini oxygen. A neighbor volunteered to take the dog to the vet. Gemini was taken to Animal Emergency, 3511 PCH, 310-325-3000. The medical care for Gemini will be expensive, but necessary. The family loves this dog.
Gemini's lungs were filled with smoke, he was wet and dirty and had a gash on his nose. The vet, Dr. Brown, said the next 48 hours are crucial. He is not eating, but is doing well considering what he's been through. He had high levels of carbon (I'm sorry, I forget the long word the Vet used) in his blood and received 6 hours of oxygen treatments. He has already had one x-ray and will need another in 48 hours to determine if there is permanent damage to his lungs. The low end of Gemini's medical expenses will be $1,976.69. The bill can get up to $2,474.66.
If you would like to contribute to Gemini's medical fund, you may go directly to Animal Emergency at 3511 PCH. Please tell them that you are there to give a donation to Gemini Cummings. Or, you may leave a check at the home of Susan Burns 25215 Weston Rd. Please make checks out to Animal Emergency. If you donate, please let us know so that we can properly thank you.
The family is well, from what I understand. Everyone is alive. Mrs. Cumming's sister is stable but is 85 years-old. Doctors are concerned about her lungs and the threat of pneomena. Keep the family in your prayers.
This is a list of donations that the family needs, put together by Valerie and Patrick Carnaham, who live two doors down from the Cummings. Both children have special needs. Josh is Autisic and Laurie has Down Sydrome. If you can help with any of the items listed below, please leave them on the Carnaham's door step with your name and address. They live at 2822 Dalemead THANK YOU!!!RICK, YOKO, LAURIE AND JOSH CUMMINGS

I got an e-mail today from my sister Darlene, or as she's known in the family, "The Crazy Dog Lady of Torrance."
She informs me that her dog Jenny, a sweet, skunk-chasing husky turned 13 this week. Her other dog, a snowball of a samoyed named Cosmo will be turning 12 next month. She had a third dog, another samoyed named Piper, but Piper died last year :(
But she's talking about getting another one. Those dogs shed enough to cover the city in white fur.
Here they are. Happy birthday you guys. How old are you in human years?

And here's a video of Rocket and Jenny playing. Cosmo doesn't like to play.
Torrance is hosting two vaccination clinics for dogs and cats in June.
The charge $14 for something called a "six-in-one" for dogs. But for the same price, cats only get a "four-in-one."
Haw haw on cats!
This is the press release I got:
The clinics will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4th and Wednesday June 18, 2008, at the Torrance Police Department Animal Control facility. The facility is located at 2200 Jefferson Street, in the northeast corner of Wilson Park, next to the tennis courts.
Prices for the vaccines are as follows:
Rabies (Dog or Cat) $ 6.00
Dog six-in-one (DHLPP) $14.00
Dog Bordatella $11.00
Cat four-in-one (FVRCP) $14.00
State mandated dog licenses can be purchased for the City of Torrance as well.
License prices are as follows:
Unaltered dogs $40.00
Spay or neutered dogs $20.00
Pet owner need their pet's Certificate of Sterility for the spayed/neutered dog license fee, unless the altered rate is on their renewal notice. Bring one check for vaccinations and a separate check for licensing. All dogs must be on a leash adequate for safe control. Cat owners should bring cats in secure carriers.
For more information, please contact the Torrance Animal Control office at (310) 618-3850 between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Torrance officials have banned dogs from posted areas at busy Wilson Park during special events, including the Saturday Farmers market.
“Over the years we’ve had so many issues with dog bites,” said Mayor Frank Scotto. “It created a tremendous amount of effort to police that.”
The ban is in place from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, when the Farmers Market is also held, as well as the day of July 4, the Halloween Carnival, the Spring Boutique and the Holiday Boutique.
Violators will receive the equivalent of a traffic ticket with a fine of $25-$50.
The ban goes into effect 30 days after Tuesday’s City Council meeting, when the ordinance was adopted.

Daily Breeze reporter Donna Littlejohn has shared her homes with a succession of wonderful, funny, and occasionally difficult canines -- Muffin, Fritz, Ellie, Mercy, Pilgrim and now Cowboy, an Australian shepherd-border collie, and Tess, a border collie. From strong-willed terriers to weirdly obsessed Australian shepherds, they've invaded her world with boundless energy, wet noses, muddy paws and soggy tennis balls. But they've really brought so much more than that -- like laughter and joy, some unexpected life lessons, and more than a few tears along the way.
