The monthly Beer & Politics discussion tonight will focus on a planned civilian trial for a 9/11 terrorist suspect. The special guest will be a local attorney who worked in Guantanamo Bay. The event begins at 7 p.m. at Gallagher's Pub & Grill, 2751 E. Broadway. Read the details from the B&P announcement below.

Speaking on the issue of moving the 9/11 terror trial for Khalid Sheik Mohammed to civilian court in New York City will be Long Beach Assistant City Prosecutor Timothy L. O'Reilly.  Mr. O'Reilly was a Long Beach criminal defense lawyer and is a career Army National Guard officer who spent a year in Guantanamo Bay.  He ensured the safe and humane treatment of all terror detainees in accordance with the Geneva Conventions.  Mr. O'Reilly will discuss the military commissions, war crimes tribunals, and some implications of transferring the terror suspects to federal criminal court.

The proposed equal benefits ordinance is the subject of discussion at Beer & Politics tonight. The ordinance would require that contractors that do business with the city of Long Beach provide the same spousal benefits to domestic partners (including gay couples) as they do to married couples.

It's a controversial and fascinating issue. Will this cost businesses more? Should the city dictate how businesses are run? Does it really matter when you're talking about a basic civil right and equality? The free forum will feature guests Councilman Robert Garcia, who proposed the law, and John Greet, "Our Liberty" columnist for LBPost.com.

The discussion begins at 7 p.m. at Smooth's Sports Grille, 144 Pine Ave. If you can't attend, then watch it live online here. You can even submit questions for the guests online.

How important are skate parks to urban communities?

That's the question at next Tuesday's monthly Beer & Politics political discussion. Long Beach's 14th Street Skate Park is slated to receive $620,000 in federal stimulus funding, which has drawn criticism from Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. He placed the project on his list of 100 questionable projects being funded by the stimulus package. See our article on that here.

Long Beach officials say the park will create jobs in the renovation work and, more importantly, keeps youths in a rough neighborhood from getting into trouble. Speaking at Beer & Politics will be Mike Donelon, a former 7th District councilman and skate park advocate, and Dennis Thys, the city's director of Community Development.

The public discussion will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Gallagher's Pub & Grill, 2751 E. Broadway. If you can't go, you can watch it live online here. Below you can watch a Press-Telegram video about the skate park as well. Enjoy!

What's happening with the Long Beach Airport's modernization plan? How does the airport impact the city, positively and negatively? What's going to happen with JetBlue and the Boeing C-17 program?

These are a few of the issues that will be discussed Tuesday night at Beer & Politics, a monthly discussion forum. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Gallagher's Pub & Grill, 2751 E. Broadway. The speakers at the event will be 3rd District City Councilman Gary DeLong, 7th District Councilwoman Tonia Reyes-Uranga and Airport Director Mario Rodriguez.

Check it out. Beer & Politics is always a lively discussion.

On March 20, environmentalists were outraged when the new owner of a parcel of wetlands on the Los Cerritos Channel near Loynes Drive and Studebaker Road bulldozed the property.

The owner says he was complying with a weed abatement order, while city officials say the property is zoned for open space and shouldn't have been touched without local and state Coastal Commission approval.

Tonight, the monthly Beer & Politics discussion will focus on this issue, with 4th District City Councilman Patrick O'Donnell and Assistant City Manager Suzanne Frick providing some answers. The event will take place at 7 p.m. at Gallagher's Pub & Grill, 2751 E. Broadway. It's free, open to the public, and always a lively dialogue.

Beer & Politics ... and sex?

The monthly Beer & Politics event Tuesday night at Gallagher's Pub & Grill started out a little bawdier than usual.

City Councilman Gary DeLong and Assistant City Manager Suzanne Frick were there to discuss a proposed land swap to preserve Los Cerritos Wetlands.

The night began with organizer Michael Clements joking that Councilman Gary DeLong was a Beer & Politics "virgin." Funny at first, but the joke stayed alive longer than it should have.

Shortly after that, DeLong was discussing how past efforts to preserve the wetlands have failed and said: "Hopefully, the key difference between now and then is we're actually going to consummate the deal."

Ooohhh. Maybe that Beer & Politics virgin shouldn't be talking about consummating anything.
Of course, as the saying goes, "politics makes strange bedfellows."
