News Release:

BANNING - When Banning High School (Banning, Ca.) football player Derron Smith was named "most valuable defensive back" at the National Underclassmen Elite 100 football combine held July 6th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, it was a well known fact that his stock would rise dramatically.

Smith has since been rated the number three (Class of 2010) cornerback prospect in the nation by the ULT 100 behind Peniel Jean of Palm Beach Florida and Khiry McQuay of Hillsborough Florida.

In a press release from the Elite 100 staff Smith is described as "One of the most explosive football players around, makes great plays all over the field".

The Broncos defense dominated play throughout the entire scrimmage.

Banning - It was played as a scrimmage and the scoreboard was turned off, so no official score was kept, but had their been, the Banning Broncos would have come away with a 33-13 victory over visiting Desert Mirage of Thermal, Friday night at Nicolet Field.

Both teams took turns with the ball starting at different yard lines on the field and worked on their offensive sets. The Broncos showed versatility in both its running and passing games. They were able to move the ball on the ground up the middle with power, and around the flanks with speed - especially when senior running back, Dominic Betts got his hands on the ball.

Betts will be a threat both running the ball and catching it. Three times he made spectacular catches deep down the field, one for a touchdown in the end zone.

Desert MIrage took the ball first and scored after about 10 plays, but from then on, Banning scored 27 unanswered points to pull ahead 27-7.

The first time Banning touched the ball they scored. Desert Mirage practiced punting from its 30-yard line, but made the mistake of letting the ball get into the hands of Betts. Betts caught the ball at the Broncos' 40-yard line, started up the middle and then cut around the left side and raced down the sidelines into the end zone untouched.

The explosive running back and receiver looks to play a huge part in the Broncos' quest to put points on the scoreboard.

The Broncos showed good speed at all the backfield positions, and on defense controlled Desert Mirage through out most of the scrimmage.

Rosters please: A reminder to coaches and stat people. When the media comes out to cover a game we need rosters. We need names and uniform numbers. It's simple. Without a roster we can't identify players. In this brief report, that is why you do not see other players mentioned.

When I asked for a roster, I was told there wasn't any. Without means of identification, your players will go unmentioned. And that's not right.
