BANNING - In what became the West's last famous manhunt, a man named Willie Boy shot and killed another man 100 years ago at Gilman Ranch in Banning. Willie Boy then ran off with the dead man's young daughter.
A posse chased him for more than a dozen days over 600 miles of desert, finally reporting that Willie Boy killed the girl and then killed himself.
People have been arguing about what really happened ever since.
As the saga of Willie Boy reaches its 100th anniversary this October, the controversy doesn't appear to be letting up. Clifford E. Trafzer, a UC Riverside history professor, supports what many Indian people believe: He says Willie Boy escaped and lived for many years after.

CABAZON - Some knew he was coming, but for others when Santa Claus knocked on their classroom door and then walked in it was a complete surprise. And shouts of,
"Hi Santa!" and "It's Santa Claus!" rang out as he greeted them with a "Merry Christmas!"
For over 10 years the Morongo Band of Mission Indians have made Christmas a special time at Cabazon Elementary School with "Bringing Christmas to Cabazon" sponsored by the tribe's outreach program.
And Wednesday, Santa and his helpers returned once again to visit the school bearing gifts of backpacks filled with school supplies and new Nike shoes. Along with stockings stuffed with fruit and candy, and gift certificates to Morongo Canyon Lanes Bowling Alley.
"We've adopted Cabazon," said Elaine Mathews, Morongo Outreach Committee Chairwoman. "There is a great need to help children all over, but it's greater here, and they are our neighbors. Seeing a smile on a child's face is the best thing in the world."

BANNING - All season long the Banning Broncos have had the explosive offensive tandem of quarterback, Derron Smith, and running back, Domenic Betts, who have given opposing teams nightmares.
Well, the Broncos found out that the Serrano Diamondbacks of Phelan have a pretty good offensive threat to contend with too in junior running back and defensive back, Dionza Bradford.
And Bradford had a special kind of game in leading the Diamondbacks to a 21-12 victory over the Broncos at Nicolet Field in Banning Friday night in the quarter-finals of the CIF Southern Section Eastern Division Playoffs.
Bradford rushed for two touchdowns and intercepted Smith three times. Two of those interceptions came on Banning drives deep in Serrano territory.
"He's a busy guy and he has a habit of making big plays," said Serrano Head Coach, Ray Maholchic. "He has made two big plays now at the start of second halves."
