BEAUMONT, CA - Even in bad economic times, the Beaumont Unified School District comes through. Donations to the United Way by District employees jumped to $26,000 this year, a $5,000 increase over the previous year.
Jeanette Marlar, Eastern Region Director of the United Way of the Inland Valleys, told the District's Board of Trustees at a recent meeting that, "this District always steps up to the plate." In the last five years, she said, Beaumont employees have contributed about $100,000.
Lisa Tarrats, the District's Facilities Accounting Technician, is the District's United Way Campaign Manager. "The total collected in the Pass was $66,000," she said. "Of that, $26,000 came from Beaumont."

BEAUMONT - Aurora Perry, Principal of Three Rings Ranch Elementary School in Beaumont, took two pies in the face to reward Kindergarten students for raising money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
The school raised $2,000. Students in Mrs. Robin Loufek's and Anna Hughes' classes collected the most pennies. Selected to pie the principal were Vincent Vogen and Amy Pierce, who agreed that covering Perry's face with whipped cream was "fun."

BEAUMONT, CA - The Beaumont Unified School District Board of Trustees, at its May12, 2009 meeting, considered alternatives to the District's before- and after-school programs for the 2009-2010 school year.
In the interest of cost savings, the District is considering ending its Connections program and instead offering parents the option of using services provided by the City of Beaumont or the Boys and Girls Club of the San Gorgonio Pass.

BEAUMONT, CA - It may not be rocket science, but it was close. The hundreds of students who participated in the Beaumont Unified School District Science Fair worked hard to answer some fairly complex questions.
In one case, it really was rocket science. Mason Schemel and Noah Kelly, both fourth-graders at Palm Elementary School, wanted to see how far 2 liter bottles filled with water and air would travel. So, with parents in tow, the boys fired off the bottle rockets. The bottles flew an average of 122 feet.
Schemel's and Kelly's project took first place in its division at the District level science fair, then went on to compete at the County level, where they placed. "It was fun watching the bottles fly through the air," said Kelly, whose dad helped out. "We got a big workout" from chasing the bottles.

BEAUMONT, CA - Beaumont Unified School District officials are closely watching the recent outbreak of swine flu, also known as H1N1 and are telling parents not to panic if their child appears to have symptoms of the illness.
Del Grace, the District nurse and a Registered Nurse Practitioner, said that students who show flu-like symptoms need to stay home to take care of themselves and to be sure the symptoms don't spread.
"We are following our infectious-disease protocol," said Grace, who is based at Beaumont High School. "That protocol says that if a student is ill, he or she should stay home."
In an effort to keep the flu out of Beaumont schools, custodians are disinfecting items such as doorknobs, sink faucets and dispensers a couple of times a day, said Vi Peña, Maintenance Department Office Clerk.
"We are being extra cautious, and we're reminding everyone that they need to wash their hands regularly" she said.

BEAUMONT, CA - Jack Box, who was charged with climbing up his back-yard beanstalk and killing the Giant, has been found not guilty of murder. Jack, who also was charged with burglary and theft in the taking of the hen that laid the golden egg, was convicted of two counts of theft.
Jack, who said he "rescued" the hen because he thought the Giant would hurt it, said he was afraid of the massive man living in the clouds. He claimed his chopping down of the beanstalk, which sent the plummeting Giant to his death, was self-defense. "I didn't mean to kill the Giant," Jack said on the stand.
As the child's fairy tale goes, the Giant, who was home in his castle, was chased by Jack from the castle and toward the beanstalk growing in Jack's back yard. Jack reached the beanstalk first and climbed down. When the boy reached the ground, he saw the giant heading toward him, so he cut down the beanstalk.
"When the Giant fell in your back yard, what did you do?" asked one of the attorneys.
"I made sure he missed the Hen," Jack said.

BEAUMONT, CA - It was a car show like never before. The designers went all out to show off what they could do. There were race cars, 4x4s, flame paintjobs, a Hummer and even vehicles decorated with flowers.
These were concept cars that came from the minds of children. About 96 of them from Tournament Hills Elementary School, where Kindergarten teacher Crystal Tax wanted to find a way to wrap up a Language Arts unit on transportation.
"We were finishing up the unit on Wheels All Around Us and I was trying to find a fun way to do it," she said. So, with a little help from YouTube, Tax came up with the idea for the Kindy 500. She sent home a note asking parents to work with the kids to design and build a car out of cardboard that they could carry around - a car that would reflect their child's personality.
Cathy Heals' daughter, Bella, 5, really got into it. "She did the whole thing," Cathy said. "She put on the flowers, glitter and little rhinestones."

BEAUMONT, CA - Beaumont High School sophomore Ryan Odle has won third place in the Riverside County History Day competition and now is headed for the state contest, which runs from April 30 through May 3.
Odle, who competed in the Individual Exhibit category at both county and local levels, won the Beaumont High School History Day competition for his display about legendary musician Louis Armstrong. His exhibit featured a stage with working lights surrounded by photos of and factoids about Satchmo as well as a recording of Armstrong singing "Hello Dolly."
During the local History Day, Odle said, "I could relate to how he revolutionized jazz. I never knew how he changed jazz, but he changed it into a solo art."
History Day is a nationwide competition in which students who make it to the national level can win thousands of dollars in scholarships. Students start at the school level, then proceed to county, state and national competitions. This year's topic, set by National History Day Inc., is "The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies."

BEAUMONT, CA - Abigail Cuellar wants to be an actress. Annette Mata hopes to be an artist. Jazmin Nery can't decide: She either wants to be an OB-GYN or a K-9 officer, like her dad.
And while these fourth-graders have a ways to go until they have to make that fateful decision, they got a little help from Anna M. Hause Elementary School, which held its first-ever Career Week recently.
Olivia Orozco, a fourth-grade teacher who helped organize the festivities, said the point of Career Week is to give the students "an idea of how much education they will need to reach their goals."
"We wanted to expose them to something that could be their goal for the future," she said. "Listening to the speakers really opened their eyes to the reality of all this stuff."

BEAUMONT, CA - A Celebration of Reading and the Arts, which will include book sales, face painting, dancers, free hot dogs for kids under 12 and other entertainment, is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at Mountain View Middle School, 200 Cougar Way.
The event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the school's multi-purpose room, is aimed at elementary-age students, said Vi Pena, secretary in the Beaumont Unified School District's Maintenance Department. Pena coordinates the free event.
Pena said the Celebration includes not only District volunteers, but support from a number of local groups, including Soroptimists, Rotary, Kiwanis, Friends of the Library and the Cherry Festival Association.
Also attending will be California Highway Patrol Officers, who will offer free photos and fingerprinting of students. In addition, representatives of San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital will allow students to use the "germ box," which lets them see how many germs are still on their hands after they've been washed.
Proceeds from the non-profit event will be used to buy books for the elementary school libraries.

BEAUMONT, CA - "He left as a high school senior and came back as a man."
That's how Lisa Faulkner, a secretary at Beaumont High School, described her son, Zach, during his recent visit home from the Army. Zach, a 2008 Beaumont High School graduate, is now a trained and certified airborne combat medic, which means he will jump out of airplanes to help his wounded comrades.
"There's a plethora of reasons why I enlisted," said Zach, 19, who visited the school decked out in his camouflage uniform (ACUs). "I always wanted to join the armed services. I also wanted to get into the medical field and into flight medicine."
His most recent achievements, after completing nine weeks of basic training at Fort Benning in Georgia, was to go through combat medic training at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, and parachute training Airborne School back at Fort Benning.
He called the training a "crash course." When he graduated on Feb. 20, his proud parents were there to see him jump and get his wings. In fact, his father, Mark, actually pinned the wings on his son.
"It doesn't take long to figure out how gravity works," said a smiling Zach, who, before the Army, had never parachuted before. "It's pretty nerve-wracking, but it does teach you confidence."

BEAUMONT, CA - Brian Wood, San Gorgonio Middle School Principal, has been named Beaumont Unified School District's 2009 Principal of the Year. The announcement came at a recent Board of Trustees meeting at which 17 other employees also were honored.
Two of the employees moved on to the Riverside County Educator of the Year competition: Superintendent Dr. Barry Kayrell, who was named the District's Certificated Administrator of the Year, and Tammi Horn, who works in Personnel, the District Confidential Employee of the Year.
It has been a good year for Wood, who also was named California League of Middle Schools Region 10 Educator of the Year.
"Brian has done a tremendous amount of positive things at San Gorgonio," said Kayrell. "The school had a 33-point increase in its API (Academic Performance Index), and met all of its goals in every subgroup. That's a school on the move. It's a tremendous accomplishment.
"Brian has been able to formulate some wonderful instructional strategies to improve the students' test scores. And his staff has worked together to bring about these changes."

BEAUMONT, CA - Beaumont High School has been awarded a six-year accreditation, the highest level given by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
"I am so excited," said Principal Marilyn Saucedo. "Very few six-year accreditations are given out. This validates that the process we are using has put us on the right track."
The school's staff has been preparing for the WASC process for the last year-and-a-half, she said. To earn the accreditation, schools must undergo a rigid period of self-study in the following areas: Organization; Curriculum; Instruction; Assessment and Accountability; and School Culture and Student Support.
"The term of accreditation you are given is based on how honest, clear, concise and focused you are as a school community when it comes to looking at yourself and analyzing the data," Saucedo said. "You then create an action plan for all five areas."
