Laurie and Jim Booska of Calimesa were a hard act to follow on the dance floor. The couple's energy, dance steps, and enthusiasm were contagious.

About 300 country western fans turned out for another weather-perfect Thursday night at the Calimesa Golf and Country Club to clap along, sing along, and dance along to the tunes of Tommy Van and The Bounty Hunters.

Van, the lead vocal and The Bounty Hunters sang some of the top 200 all-time great classic country tunes sung by such legendary artists as George Strait, Merle Haggard, Don Williams, and Johnny Cash just to name a few.

Jim and Laurie Booska of Calimesa were on the dance floor (sidewalk and grass) in front of the stage for much of the night. Also showing talented line-dancing steps were John Corley of Calimesa and his dance partner, Julie Hansen of Yucaipa, along with Linda English of Yucaipa, Judy Van Voorhis of Orange, Linda Dickey of Beaumont, and Evelyn Charles of Banning. (Most of the men in the audience were inclined to watch, while sitting back in their lawn chairs.)

"There was a concert in Banning but I wanted to come here," said Charles.

Although all the musicians performed admirably, fiddle player Bobby Furge of Yucca Valley was clearly the fans' favorite, drawing applause during his accompaniments and solo performances.

Jazz Caribe exemplifies great concert series tradition

Calimesa - Another nice evening, another nice crowd, and another great Concerts On The Green.

Under a perfect Southern California evening's setting sun, about 300 people - youngsters, families, and seniors alike - enjoyed the sounds and hits by Jazz Caribe Thursday night at the Calimesa Country Club.

Bob Griffiths, billed as Jamaica Bob, and his four-man ensemble played a spicy mix of calypso, soca, reggae, and jazz.

Griffiths easy going style had spectators smiling, laughing and applauding as he interspersed his music and rhythmic energy with some light hearted humor.

"This was great," said John Walczak of Calimesa. "This is my first time here and I really liked it."

Now, for those with an appetite, show up at 5 p.m. and enjoy a dinner of steak, baked potato, salad, rolls and dessert. All for just $8.50. Calimesa - Richard (Red) Simmons was pleased, and so was Walt Pyle. The turnouts for the Calimesa Cultural Performing Arts Association's Concerts On The Green series at the Calimesa Country Club have been great in the first two weeks of the season.

"We had between 310 to 320 our first night," said Simmons, a director for the association, deeming the turnout a success. The concert series kicked off on July 10 with the return of the Riders of The Purple Sage. And on July 17, The Alley Cats, a hugely popular band singing tunes from the 1950s and 60's took to the stage for a return engagement.

The Calimesa Concerts on The Green presents the Alley Cats who will perform tonight at the Calimesa Country Club beginning at 6:30. The concerts are free, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

For the hungry crowd, the Country Club offers dinner starting at 5 p.m. The cost is $8.50. The Calimesa Country Club is located at 1300 Third Street, Calimesa. (From Yucaipa, just take Third Street until it ends at the Country Club.)
