CALIMESA - The Calimesa Community Garden committee will hold a meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 5:30 at Morgan's Creek Nursery.
To date, the committed has fundraised over $2,000 to pay for a water meter that must be installed at the community garden located on Avenue L between Third and Fourth streets, said Dennis Morgan, who has helped organize the drive for a community garden.
The Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist Church has generously donated the land for the community garden to use.
However, before the first seeds and plants can enter the ground, the garden committee must raise $8,000 to pay for the cost of the meter assessed by the South Coast Mesa Water Company.
And on Tuesday, May 26 at 9 a.m., the Calimesa Community Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony will be held at the garden located on Avenue L between Third and Fourth streets in Calimesa on the lot directly across from the Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist Church.
For more information, call Dennis Morgan at (909) 795-2049 and also visit the following websites to learn more about the community garden.

CALIMESA - The record will show Tra Riddle saddled with the loss, but he deserved much better in the Mesa Grande Cardinals, 7-5, loss to the Twin Pines Bobcats in the first game of a doubleheader Friday at Mesa Grande.
Riddle allowed but five hits and struck out 12, but 4 errors and 6 walks were too much for the Cardinals to overcome.
Mesa Grande held a 3-2 lead going into the top of the fifth inning, but Twin Pines sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs to take the lead. From there the Bobcats held on for the victory. Clark held the Cardinals to 5 hits in picking up the win for Twin Pines.
The loss gives the Cardinals a 4-4 overall record, 0-1 in the Victory League.
MESA GRANDE: Tyler Oliverio, Tra Riddle, and Pablo Ruano each had doubles to lead the hitting attack. And Jesse Hammond and Trevor Beeks each singled.
TWIN PINES: Clark and Lloyd each had doubles. Hurtado, Anguiano, and Luis each singled.

CALIMESA - The job market might be tight in some occupations, but that's not the case for certified drug and alcohol counselors said Dr. Mike Belzman.
The U.S. Department of Justice seems to support Belzman's contention that the need for counselors - at least in the near future - will continue to rise.
A Justice Dept. survey done in 2007 reveals that 44.4% of high school seniors will use alcohol in any 30-day period. And the figure jumps to over 66% in any 12-month period.
Factoring in the use of illegal drugs and the rising abuse of prescription drugs, and it becomes clear that more counselors will be needed to aid those wishing to free themselves of addiction.

CALIMESA - Joshua Fox has two things to thank Borders Books for. First and foremost, his wife. Secondly, working for the huge retail book chain gave him the experience and motivation to pursue a career in Library Science.
On Feb. 17, Fox was appointed as the Branch Manager of the Calimesa Library. But just five years earlier he was working at Borders. There he met Reanna, his wife to be. Loved blossomed and soon wedding bells rang.
But both Joshua and Reanna realized they wanted more than a life working in retail.
They enjoyed working with the public but, "I realized that I didn't want a career in retail," Fox said. So he moved on. And so did Reanna. She's the library assistant at the Sun City Library and is "one step below a branch manager," Joshua Fox said.

Linda Sailor, Riverside County Library System's January, Employee of The Month.
CALIMESA - Library Assistant, Linda Sailor of the Calimesa Library, received an honor few receive in the Riverside County Library System when she was named the January, "Employee of The Month."
And this is no easy award to get for Riverside County Library System has about 35 branches located throughout the county. The monthly award now puts her in running for the "Employee of The Year," award with 11 other recipients.
"Linda is excellent," said Joshua Fox, Calimesa Library Manager.
Linda has worked at the library for three years. She said the best part of her job is helping the library's patrons. "Being able to help people is very gratifying for me," she said. "I was very happy and honored to receive the award."
Linda added that the Calimesa Library is twice honored as Mary Johnson Smith, Library Assistant and the Children's Librarian received the "Employee of The Month," award in January 2006.

CALIMESA - The Calimesa Community Garden organizing committee is hosting a meeting tonight at 5:30 at Morgan's Creek Nursery, and the public is encouraged to attend.
Work is underway to start a community garden in which Calimesa residents can rent (for a small fee) a small parcel of land to grow their own produce.
Dennis Morgan of the Calimesa Chamber of Commerce said that several positive developments have taken place since the last meeting on Feb 5. And that interest in the project remains high.
Finding land for the garden has been high on the agenda. But Morgan said the Calimesa Seventh-day Adventist Church has made an offer of a large acreage that it owns.
"The Seventh-day Adventist Church has generously stepped forward and offered the use of their property," Morgan said. "But we have two hurdles to overcome, liability insurance and water."
Regarding water, Morgan said that talks are underway with the South Mesa Water District concerning the installation of a water meter. And on March 16 the garden committee will give a presentation to the Calimesa City Council during its regular meeting.
"We would like this to be a marriage between the Chamber of Commerce, the City of Calimesa, and the Community Garden," Morgan said.
Morgan said that interest for a community garden has risen as the project keeps developing. "We've had school districts interested, including Hemet (Unified School District), who will have a representative at the meeting tonight, and Yucaipa residents have called, asking how they can start a garden. We are very willing to share our information and knowledge.
"Everything has been very, very positive."
