Bicycles were collected for the Toy Give Away, people had fun having their faces painted, and live music played on stage during the Set Free Church Christmas Toy Run.

YUCAIPA - At mid-Saturday morning the rumbling of motorcycles could be heard along Calimesa Blvd. as bikers on choppers and conventional style motorcycles pulled into the Set Free Church in Yucaipa.

On the backs of their bikes they carried bags of toys and gifts that are sure to bring a smile and joy to youngsters in need come Christmas.

For the past 10 years bikers and the church have held the annual Christmas Toy Run collecting about 250 bicycles and 2,000 toys. Then on December 21st the church will host a Toy Give Away for Yucaipa Valley children.

"We have about 70 to 75 bikers (involved), they are very generous people," said Pastor Willie Dalgity of Set Free Church. "This is the prelude to our party when we give away bicycles, scooters, and toys of all kinds. I think the need will be more so this year because of the economy."

Along with the toy run, the church hosted a barbeque and vendors filled the church parking lot on the south side of the church. While younger children had their faces painted and watched as Jody Hall made them balloon animals, adults and teenagers were treated to live music inside the church.

"This is a fun day," Hall said. "It's great. You get to see the motorcycles coming in and everybody is upbeat here."

YUCAIPA - Hundreds were seated at tables on Thursday while black-and-white attired servers plopped down steaming plates of homemade turkey with all the trimmings.

Nearly 600 people were part of the four-hour Thanksgiving feast provided at Set Free Church on Calimesa Boulevard.

The guests were asked to sit down while volunteers brought them hot food, cleared their plates and delivered desserts.

Some of the guests came because they hadn't had a hot meal in weeks.

YUCAIPA - For over 12 years Set Free Church has opened its doors and welcomed in the hungry and fed them a delicious dinner on Thanksgiving Day. Last year about 450 came. This year the crew of 60 volunteers may have to work a little harder, and a little longer, because the numbers are expected to increase.

"It's increased every year since I started," said Pat Bruno, who has served as the Set Free Thanksgiving Coordinator for five years. "There are always more coming for a dinner. We are expecting at least 500 to 600 this year because of the economy."
