Kiteboarding has captured the heart of a few hearty folks on the peninsula.
From experiencee, they know they're sometimes at the mercy of a stiff sea breeze -- when control of the skiboard is somewhat tenuous.
So ... there's been an effort launched to introduce "signage improvements" to a portion of the peninsula, warning beach visitors of the potential hazards -- that is, of the physical contacs, bumps, body slams, with a fast-moving kiteboarder who might weigh close to 200 pounds..
Along with new signage, the peninsula kiteboarders have been researching the feasibility of designing a beach kiting only area.
That could mean no swimmers!
It would be, they speculate, about a 100-yard stretch where "the lifeguards will keep the swimmer out so kiters can ride in and out on a much safer path ... on crowded afternoons."
The site would be dubbed a "Kite Zone," one that's not all that uncommon in other beach towns, according to the organizers.
"Seal Beach and Sunset have these small zones, and it works out well at both sites," Al Navas, of the land-based Southern California Kiteboarding Association, noted on its website. "This specialized separation will minimize a lot o the problems that swimmers and kids presently have with kiters."
