John Thomas is being installed this weekend as Long Beach Heritage's new president.

It's Long Beach haven for lovers of all things historic.

Thomas belongs to the Bluff Heights area, where there are handsome historic homes. And the Bluff Heights Neighborhood Association Home Page is getting somewhat "historic" in nature. Consider the following entry for a meeting at Horace Mann School:

"NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES MANAGER TO SPEAK AT BHNA MEETING

"Join us on Sept. 15, 7 p.m. at Horace Mann Elementary School Auditorium for our annual fall gathering. "We have an interesting and informative meeting planned. "Our guest speaker is Dennis Thys, Long Beach Neighborhood Services Bureau Manager, who will speak on the Code Enforcement Citation Ordinance. This newly established ordinance was developed to promote the health and safety of residents and to protect and enhance the value of residences and businesses within the city. The code establishes the authority of city staff for issuing citations to violators of the code provisions to achieve compliance with many common property maintenance violations occurring in neighborhoods. These violations include: illegally parked vehicles, overgrown weeds, trash & debris, illegal auto repairs; and illegal garage conversions. Mr. Thys will explain how the citation process works and will answer questions regarding the ordinance. "A very important part of the meeting will be devoted to annual elections for your association Board of Directors. "We want to know what you would like to have the board accomplish this coming year. Your suggestions and recommendations are of great value in our efforts to continue our success as a neighborhood association. "Also included in the meeting agenda will be an update from our local police officers and City Council representatives. Doors open at 6:45 for socializing and refreshments."

Long Beach Heritage plans to host its annual meeting Sunday (July 27) at two historic locations downtown.
There will be a reception at the Farmers & Merchant Bank, 302 Pine Ave., followed by a meeting at The Cellar, 201 Broadway.
Both meetings, from 2 to 4 p.m., are free, but organizers are asking that reservations be made.
The F&M main branch was built in 1922, and its interior was restored recently to its original splendor, organizers noted in their announcement.
Visitors, organizers promised, will enjoy a "red Italian marble entrance with doors made of brass-plated steel opening onto a lobby with pink marble on the floor and the customer counter, metal teller wickets, terra cotta friezes with classical motifs on the mezzanine walls, 12 brass chandeliers with inlaid turquoise enamel, and skylights of amber stained glass." Wow!
The day's event includes year-end reports on Long Beach Heritage activities and events during the past year, installation of officers, including new president John Thomas.           Long Beach Heritage will host a reception at The Cellar, anchored in the Insurance Exchange Building. It was designated as a national historic landmark in 2003, and many of ots original architectural details, including Art Deco touches added in a 1930's remodel, were preserved and restored during the building's conversion to lofts.
Only meeting attendees will be allowed to attend the reception. For reservations, call (562) 493-7019 or e-mail preservation@lbheritage.org
