From colleague Kristina Hernandez:
FONTANA - In these hard economic times, every household seems to be on the lookout for local and cost-saving entertainment.
The city may have just the ticket.
Combining movies and swimming into one event, the city is once again offering its "Dive-In Movie" series every Friday now through Aug. 14 at Heritage Pool, 7350 W. Liberty Parkway.
"This event is part of our 'Promote Healthy Fontana' series," said Eyde Jimenez, assistant coordinator for the Fontana Community Services Department. "We want to encourage residents that there is more to do than sitting at home and watching TV. So we're inviting everyone to come out and play."
Events begin at 6:30 p.m. with swimming, games, contests, food and more. Movies screen at dusk, said Jimenez.
For parents, the Dive-In series is a chance to take the family out to cool off from the summer heat without breaking the bank.
"It's cheap, fun and we can all relax and have a good time," said Melissa Rodriguez of Fontana, who brought her three children - Aliza, 7, and Arianna and Adrinna, both 5 - to last Friday's screening of "Wall-E."
"This is definitely a cost-saving alternative," Rodriguez said.
Each movie shares the theme under the city's summer weekly "Stretch Your Imagination" banner.
Friday's theme will be "Fontana's Big Top Circus." The 1941 Disney classic "Dumbo" will be screened.
Films scheduled to close out the series include "The Jungle Book" (July 24), "The Jetsons" (July 31), "Aladdin" (Aug. 7) and "Peter Pan" (Aug. 14).
Admission is $1.50 for children, $3 for adults.
The movie selections are repeated at 6:30 p.m. each Saturday through Aug. 15 at the Fontana Park Aquatics Center, 15610 Summit Ave.
Admission starts at $5 for adults, $3 for kids.
Cost is slightly higher, said Jimenez, because the pool is equipped with slides.
