Fontana Park is one of the American Public Works Association's Public Works Projects of the Year for 2009.

The award falls within the structure category for projects that cost $25 to $75 million.

The 38-acre park cost $65 million to build. It opened in October.

The park is located at Summit Avenue and Lytle Creek Road, just north of the 210 Freeway.

Police arrested a Fontana man Wednesday on suspicion of using a baseball bat to knock another man unconscious.

Jose Navarro, 18, became upset when the victim insulted his sister, said Fontana police Sgt. Jeff Decker. Navarro is the brother of the victim's girlfriend.

Police said an argument erupted inside a home in the 17200 block of Malaga Court about 9:30 p.m. When the fight continued outside in the front yard, Navarro grabbed a bat and struck the victim over the head, Decker said.

Police arrested Navarro on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Snipped from a city news release:

The Mayor and City Council announce a successful beginning for the new Fontana Park located at 15556 Summit Avenue on Summit Avenue and Lytle Creek Road.

The grand opening day offered 30,000 visitors an opportunity to visit Fontana's largest community center, the Jessie Turner Health and Fitness Community Center, the Aquatics Center, passive play area with promenade, sports pavilion, Dog Park, and Skate and BMX Park.

Many stayed all day and well into the early evening hours simply enjoying what is one of the Inland Empire's premiere venues.

Apologies for the rough format. Pulled from the city's brochure thingy, which is much prettier. The festivities are tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, anno domini/common era. The park is located at 15556 Summit Ave. at Lytle Creek Road.
