With only two episodes left in Battlestar Galactica's final season, Ron Moore and David Eick still have a lot of explaining to do. Since we're huge fans of the show here at Modern Mythology this post is to help people catch up if they missed an episode as well as discuss possible theories to questions still unanswered.

What they've covered so far: SPOILERS (So don't carry on if you are not caught up - more after the supper picture).

The end is here

Earth is a joke. The first couple episodes in season 4.5 were about how people would react when you rip away their hopes and dreams. When they finally reach nuked earth the fleet hit a brick wall and people were forced to deal with the situation.

I believe Anastasia "Dee" Dualla's reaction best illustrated the feelings of the fleet since finding Earth was the only thing she had left going for her. She had two relationships that didn't work out, and Earth was her last glimmering hope. She couldn't handle having that taken away.  The normally regimented Dee couldn't even get through her daily routine anymore. After a last date with Lee Adama -- she wanted to feel happy one last time -- she shockingly ended her life.

Ellen Tigh was revealed as the final cylon. It wasn't a shocking feeling when this was announced, compared to ground breaking moments like when they found earth, or when Boomer shot Admiral William Adama. But with Col. Saul Tigh being a cylon this seemed like another piece to the  puzzle that finally fell into place. Tigh and Ellen's relationship always seemed to have more to it than what has been shown, and early in the first and second season everyone's gut instincts screamed cylon when it came to Ellen.

starbuck_800.jpgWe also finally get an idea about what Starbuck is now after the episode, "Someone To Watch Over Me." It is all but said that Daniel, the missing number in the cylon lineup, is her father, Dreilede Thrace and that Kara is either the first or known first human/cylon offspring. Her father taught her the song, "All Along the Watchtower" which is the same song the final five have heard in their heads on multiple occasions. Now Anders says he wrote the song. So could Anders have taught the song to Daniel who then taught it to Starbuck? They also have to fill in the gaps on how Hera knows the notes to the song.

What still needs to be explained and predictions:

Why "All Along the Watchtower, and what is its meaning?" I've read multiple blogs and forum posts about people trying to link the lyrics of "All Along the Watchtower" to what is happening in the show right now. But I think Moore felt that the song's harmony fit well in the BSG universe, not to mention he is completely in love with that song as he says here in this interview with the Chicago Tribune:

Ron Moore: I had personally been obsessed with the song for a while. So, I just thought it was a fascinating song and the lyrics.
I had wanted to work it into a project of mine since, for the last several years. In fact I wanted to do a whole Roswell episode about it.

It was just sort of always in the back of my mind. And as we started talking about music and using music as a trigger, I just immediately said oh and it has to be "All Along the Watchtower".

And everybody kind of laughed. Then I just was very much, dogged about it. And kept going and made, and then we got the rights. And that became the song.

adama_1024.jpgIn "Someone to Watch Over Me" which aired the week before, the President Laura Roslin collapsed after Boomer took Hera. In last week's "Islanded in a Stream of Stars," The Galactica and President Roslin continues to deteriorate and the Admiral has to make a decision that will affect the welfare of his crew. He tells Tigh that the ship's vital resources (people in particular) need to move to their allied cylon basestar. And next week's preview of "Daybreak, Part 1" has Adama asking for volunteers to take on a final deadly mission on the old vessel that will finally (and likely) pit Admiral Adama against Cavil.

The episode this weekend will be the first of what looks to be an intense two-part finale.

Other fan theories about this can be found at the BSG SciFi forum.

This leads us into the next question. Where is the thirteenth colony that Cavil said Ellen's lab is on? Is this planet Earth? Or is the planet Galactica and the fleet found the real earth? Are there two different Earth planets? A cylon Earth and a human Earth?

Ron Moore said in an interview regarding nuked Earth, "They have found Earth. This is the Earth that the 13th Colony discovered, they christened it Earth. They found Earth."

Since they have already found Earth then we need an explanation of what the thirteenth colony is and who inhabits that planet. As well as a decent timeline explanation for Earth, Kobol and the colonies cataclysms that happened simultaneously 2,000 years ago.

What is Cavil's plan and why does he need Hera? This has to lead into the Opera House vision, and I hope this is where Baltar comes into play.

There is going to have to be a confrontation with Cavil and the other cylons to get Hera back now thanks to Boomer. I'm a fan of Boomer's character, but sadly she has sealed her fate. There is going to be no mercy on her when she crosses  paths with Galactica again. Here's hoping that Tyrol gets to pull the trigger for how she used him last episode. Athena would also be a solid choice for revenge after all the fraking she did with Helo last episode.

After part one of "Daybreak" airs on March 13th, we'll get a reaction up as soon as we can. There are only a two weeks left of BSG so enjoy it while it lasts.

thing.jpgLet me get this straight...

The dude who did the successful remake of the TV show "Battlestar Galactica" is taking on a remake of writer-director John Carpenter's remake of a horror-science fiction classic?  Did I mess all that up?

That's the word as reported by Variety.  Universal will hire Ron Moore of Galactica to write the script for a new version of "The Thing" that will draw from Carpenter's brilliant film starring Kurt Russell and the short story "Who Goes There."

I am cool with Ron Moore because he has done us proud with "Battlestar Galactica," but some of these remakes of past films are happening faster than even I can handle.  Well, if anyone can find an interesting new angle to take on "The Thing" it would be Moore.  We'll see...

I went to a viewing party for the first episode of "Battlestar Galactica: The Final Episodes" and it was everything I wanted in a mid-season premiere.

We'll discuss more about the actual program later... My issue is about the commercials that ran after some pretty dramatic breaks. There would be nothing wrong with these ads if they ran during a football game, but considering the BSG subject matter, some of them seemed a little... disconcerting. And we didn't have it as bad as Valerie D'Orazio over at Occasional Superheroine.

One of those dramatic moments are available on YouTube and she linked to a video example that illustrated what it was like to go from a highly intense scene to... well... you should watch it for yourself.

But DON'T WATCH IT if you are below 18, sitting at work, and haven't seen the first episode of this season's BSG yet.

You've had your warning. Click here to view or on the image below.

Battlestar supper.jpgI can't wait for this.

I place this show with "Lost" as one of my can't-miss-must-TIVO programs. The final episodes are starting tonight for "Battlestar Galactica" on Sci Fi (10 p.m.) -- the series critics call "the best show on television."

Our friends at The Los Angeles Daily News have created a Battlestar Galactica interactive for the show with some background and plot points to help those who haven't kept up. If you are a hater of the new BSG and say there is only room for the first "Battlestar Galactica" series in your life, then allow me to offer you an intervention...

I was once like you.

I loved that theme song and Lorne Greene was the man, but most of those episodes we watched when we were 10-years-old don't compare to the show today. There were some memorable moments (a Cylon blaster duel on a wild west-themed planet, anyone?). Other than some character flashes, those original BSG episodes were not all that awesome -- seriously. This isn't personal, folks I'm just telling you like it is.

I went through a lot of stages when I heard there was gonna be a remake...

grace_park.jpgThere was denial: "How can you make Boomer into a woman...?"

I learned to cope: "Wow, that Boomer really is an extremely attractive woman."

Then there was acceptance: "You mean there are thousands of Boomers?!? That's awesome!"

I was cured and have been a regular viewer ever since.

Seriously, the show is great so please treat yourself and get your Netflix workin' or whatever and catch the heck up.

I will post something about the episodes here and there along the way and maybe we can talk theories with a BIG SPOILER WARNING before we do that, of course.

Caprica.jpgWired magazine reports that "Caprica," a spinoff of the critically acclaimed "Battlestar Galactica," will get a 20-episode run as a series in 2010.

We showed you the trailer from "Caprica" a while back. Click the image or here to check out the post and video.

I appreciate the idea as a one-shot movie to set up the 'Battlestar' universe and clarify some things, but... is this something that can carry a regular series?

This thirty second video clip is only a brief glimpse of what's to come but for the hardcore fan of "Battlestar Galactica," it is something to be dissected, inspected and discussed.

I'm trying to rewind it again but my darn internet is too slow.

Who is President Laura Roslin threatening? And what did Kara Thrace (STARBUCK) find? Check out this clip from SCI FI and expect to hear a lot more from me sometime before the final episodes premiere January 16, 2009.

For those who want more -- there is an extended online only trailer here.
Thumbnail image for Athena.jpgEntertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reports exclusive confirmation that the second half of the fourth and final season of "Battlestar Galactica" will debut Jan. 16 on SCI FI Channel.

The show creators suggested January would be the likely month of return but with all the changes going on in television schedules post Writer's Strike there was no way to be sure.

I call this good news (bad news for my wife) because now I have to go back into my obsessive pondering of the mystery of the Cylons.

I told you about 'Caprica' the "Battlestar Galactica" prequel which will air as a two-hour movie sometime next year. Now watch the trailer and pay close attention to the mention of the "one true God."

capricatrail.jpg For those who follow the show, this clip suggests all sorts of interesting questions about the evolution of the Cylons doesn't it?

A 'Battlestar Galactica' spinoff?

Battlestar supper.jpg"Battlestar Galactica" show co-producer David Eick has confirmed that a pilot for a series to be called "Caprica" is completed and is awaiting a blessing from the Lords of Sci-Fi Channel to become regular programming.

The show concept sounds like it has a touch of the same thing affecting "Star Wars" -- the dreaded prequel-itis syndrome. It has been reported the story of the pilot would take place some fifty years before the events we have witnessed over these last four seasons.

In "Caprica" we would get to see the Adama clan a generation before the ones we know and love. And the show will introduce the character Daniel Greystone, a brilliant inventor who plays an important part in future events.

In his interview with Newsarama this week David Eick said he was not sure whether the series will be picked up yet, but did mention actor Eric Stoltz "who plays Daniel." The mill out there says this will be a two-hour pilot.

Not that there is anything wrong with going back in time before main story events in small doses (The Battlestar movie "RAZOR" was good). I would have been thrilled to see only a single prequel project on the CLONE WARS and then a sequel to STAR WARS proper, for  example. Perhaps "Caprica" will not be a series and only end up as something of a one-shot that compliments the current show.

Eick did not announce when the "Caprica" movie/pilot will air.

And about "Battlestar Galactica" ...

The current series has run half of its fourth season and ended with a devestating twist (NO SPOILER WARNING NEEDED THIS TIME, BUT YOU BETTER CATCH UP) and will start the second half of the fourth season in "early 2009."
