An electrical fire engulfed a home on Orchard Street Monday, displacing a family and leaving few items salvageable.

The blaze started at around 12:54 p.m. and was put out in 15 minutes by the Montclair Fire Department with assistance from Ontario, Upland and Chino departments, said Mike Donley, Montclair fire spokesman. No nearby homes were affected.

Donley said the fire reached the attic of the single-family home and it took nearly three hours to make sure the blaze was fully extinguished. At around 9:30 p.m. Monday, firefighters returned to extinguish a small fire that started up again.

The high temperatures on Monday made it a challenge for the 30 firefighters.

"Due to the heat and the ambient heat, the firefighters were totally spent," Donley said. "It was well over 105 degrees so the scene was very, very hot."

A preliminary investigation pointed to electrical wires as the cause of the blaze. A resident who was inside the house when the fire started, told officials there was a knocking sound behind one of the walls. Donley said the sound might have been sparks from electrical wires.

A 1-acre brush fire burned in the San Bernardino foothills Friday afternoon, giving firefighters a scare early in the year.

The 4 p.m. fire burned in Bailey Canyon off Palm Avenue said fire spokesman Steve Tracy.

"If this fire would have taken place two and a half, three months from now, it would have been a real big deal," he said, noting that the vegetation is still green.

Low humidity, warm weather, below-average rainfall totals and winds reaching 30 miles per hour strengthened the fire, which took more than half an hour to contain.

No one was injured, no buildings were damaged and the cause of the fire is under  investigation.

Firefighters from the city and the U.S. Forest Service operated together to combat the fire.

Kurt Winchester, a district ranger in the San Bernardino National Forest, has been named the forest's new fire chief.

He will replace Chief Michael Dietrich, who retires April 3.

Winchester holds a bachelor's of science degree in forest management from Utah State University. He has served as a temporary firefighter, in timber and fire management and in various other positions in national forests.

"I'm excited about my new role on the forest and I look forward to continuing the excellent work established under Chief Dietrich," Winchester, 54, said in a statement.

The rubbish fire that ignited about 5:15 p.m. Monday is still burning, Ontario firefighters said.

The fire started at a plastics collection center at the corner of Archibald and Edison avenues and has been burning for more than 40 hours now.

Firefighters were hoping to have the blaze extinguished by 9 p.m. Tuesday, but the limited access of water and the amount of fire involved has made it difficult for crews to put out, officials said.

A bulldozer was brought in to separate the burning plastic piles, which are bundled and supposed to be shipped overseas for recycling. The fire has been contained to an area of 100 yards by 200 yards and only burned about five acres.

Fire officials said they are fairly positive the fire will be out by this evening.
