A San Diego man, who was suspected of molesting a teenager he met at Redlands Mall, is scheduled to be sentenced next month after he accepted a plea bargain in Superior Court.

Scott Douglas Oakley, 29, pleaded no contest to one count of oral copulation with a minor under 16 years old during court proceedings Friday in San Bernardino Superior Court, according to court records.

Oakley is scheduled to be sentenced May 8. He told authorities he had been seeking out transient men across the state for sex for 11 years.

Lawyers are giving their closing arguments in Barstow this morning in the trial for a Riverside man accused of the execution-style killing of aspiring San Bernardino rapper Robert Raymond Mastrangelo.


Witness testimony has been underway in the trial for Dudzai Pswatai since March 10 in Barstow Superior Court. Closing arguments to the jury were set to begin this morning, and the case would then be presented to the jury for deliberation following final instructions from the judge, confirmed Deputy District Attorney Shannon Faherty.


Pswatai faces charges of murder, robbery, kidnapping and torture in the death of Mastrangelo, whose body was found by a jogger in June in a drainage ditch alongside the 15 Freeway near Barstow. The victim's hands and feet were bound, and he had been shot several times, according to police.

Redlands Mayor Jon Harrison will host the annual State of the City Address April 16 at the University of Redlands.

The theme of this year's address will be "Sustainability During Difficult Times."

The address will be held at the university's Orton Center at 1200 E. Colton Ave. There will be refreshments.

There will also be a business expo beforehand to draw attention to local businesses with green products and services. The expo begins at 5 p.m, and the address will begin around 7:15 p.m.

Redlands police on Wednesday arrested two men on suspicion of stabbing an 18-year-old man, officials said. The men are said to be documented Redlands gang members.

The 18-year-old, unidentified Redlands man was stabbed around 8 p.m. at a home in the 800 block of Oxford Drive, according to a Redlands news release.

The man took himself to the hospital and was is in stable condition.

Police arrested Thomas Cose, 19, of Mentone, and David Diaz, 18, of Redlands. Police found Cose at his Mentone home and Diaz at another Mentone home.

Police say the two men got in a fight with the victim before stabbing him and fleeing.

They were arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy and a gang enhancement.

Seven teenage boys in county custody got a chance to visit the University of Redlands Tuesday.
The idea was to take kids, who are in county custody because of criminal convictions, to a positive, college environment to help rehabilitate them.

"I want to give our youth every opportunity to experience and learn about things they never knew were possible," Probation Chief Michelle Scray said in a statement.

The seven boys, 15 to 18, are all in a county program launched in 2007 called Gateway.
The boys visited with university students, toured campus and had lunch.

"They thought they should show them what a university is like," said Probation spokeswoman Susanne Pastuschek.

Registration for the 2009 Redlands Bicycle Classic Rotary Ride is now open.

The ride will take place Saturday.

All proceeds will benefit local charities supported by the Rotary Club of Redlands.

Bicyclists may register to ride in one of three courses -- the 6- or 12-mile simple course, the 33-mile scenic course or the 60-mile savage course.

A woman, who helped an inmate boyfriend attempt a hit from inside a state prison, missed out on a lighter sentence after she allegedly broke more laws while she was released from custody.

Erika Julia Hernandez, 29, had pleaded guilty to one count of solicitation to commit murder in February and was set to receive a five-year sentence under a plea bargain she reached with prosecutors in San Bernardino Superior Court, according to court records.

Hernandez requested to be released on her own recognizance, and the court granted it. However, the defendant was told she could receive the full sentence, 13 years, if she broke any of the conditions of her release.

A Yucaipa man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday just as a trial was set to begin in the death of a 68-year-old woman in a DUI crash three years ago in Redlands.

Glenn Matthew Chiccarelli, 50, faces 15 years to life in state prison for killing Frances Fullingim, of Yucaipa, when he is sentenced June 4 in San Bernardino Superior Court, according to Deputy District Attorney William Lee.

A plea bargain was reached as a court trial, which is occurs before a judge only, was about to get underway, according to court records.

A 76-year-old man with bee allergies was attacked by a swarm of bees, stung 50 times and found blue with no pulse Tuesday morning in Redlands.

The man was in an avocado field in the 1400 block of East San Bernardino Avenue around 11:30 a.m. when the bees attacked, stinging him 50 times in his torso, neck and head, said Redlands fire Battalion Chief David Graves.

Firefighters found the man on his back in a dirt field, lying in a puddle of water. His son tried to use water to stop the attack. The man had been on the ground about 10 minutes when firefighters arrived and wasn't breathing, Graves said.

He also had two bees in his mouth and throat.

By the time firefighters got the man to Redlands Community Hospital, he had a pulse. It wasn't clear what kind of bees the man encountered
Walgreens employees and Redlands paramedics saved a 91-year-old man suffering from cardiac arrest Monday.

Around 3 p.m., the man went into cardiac arrest at the Walgreens in the 800 block of East Lugonia Avenue, according to a Redlands news release.

Two employees performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived. Paramedics took over treatment and took the man to Redlands Community Hospital.

Redlands fire Chief Jeff Frazier praised the work of his firefighter-paramedics.

"As the result of the quality care provided by Redlands Fire paramedics and the effective provision of CPR by concerned, trained and willing bystanders, a pulse and breathing was restored on scene," he said.
Redlands authorities on Tuesday found 40 to 50 gallons of hazardous waste left on Texas Street.

Around 2 p.m., firefighters and a county Hazmat team went to the scene of the dump at Texas and Water Streets, according to a Redlands news release.

There they found a pile of debris that was four feet high, 10 feet by 30 feet. A box in the pile contained a number of containers of oil.

Illegally dumping hazardous materials is punishable with up to three years in prison and $250,000 per day of violation.

Redlands officials found Tuesday afternoon material that was illegally dumped on Texas Street near the Santa Ana River Wash.

Forty to 50 gallons of oil and other debris were found around 2 p.m., said Redlands fire Batallion Chief David Graves.

Redlands fire and county Hazmat teams were at the scene, he said.

It is not yet clear when the material was dumped.

Ken Arakawa was last seen in the 500 block of Cajon Street, according to a news release put together by the family.

Arakawa drives a 2004 Buick Century with the license number 5FRH490. He is 5-feet, 30-inches tall, weighs 120 pounds and has white hair. He was wearing tan, corduroy pants, a plaid shirt and gray sweater. Anyone with information should call the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department at (909) 824-0680.


Redlands police arrested nine people on suspicion of driving under the influence during a checkpoint and saturation patrol period Friday night.

Police also arrested another man who sped away from the checkpoint, crashed his car
and tried to take refuge in his girlfriend's house before police caught up with him and arrested him on outstanding warrants
.
The checkpoint was held from 7 p.m. Friday until 3 a.m. Saturday on Orange Street
near San Bernardino Avenue, according to a Redlands news release.

In all, the saturation patrols netted five arrests, and the checkpoint led to four arrests, not including the man who crashed his car.

Sergeant Travis Martinez made all five saturation-patrol arrests. Martinez was named "Officer of the Year" and will be honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving in March. He made 90 DUI arrests last year.

The patrols and checkpoint were paid for with state grant money.
A man suspected of fatally gunning down 46-year-old Keith Parks, in what prosecutors have said was an attempt to collect a $150 debt, has opted to go to trial without a jury.


Mario "Stomper" Valderrama announced today during proceedings in San Bernardino Superior Court that he wants to have a court trial before Judge Kyle Brodie only. The judge would then listen to the witness testimony and render a decision instead of a jury.


Trial proceedings have been underway since last week for the 25-year-old Valderrama, who allegedly took a four-foot long shotgun to collect a $150 debt from Parks in 2004, fatally shot him in a Redlands lot and then left in the man's Chrysler PT Cruiser, according to Redlands police.

Redlands police are looking for information about an armed robbery that took place Saturday at a Radio Shack.

Around 6 p.m., a man walked into the store at 700 E. Redlands Blvd. and showed a handgun, according to a Redlands news release. He left after taking money from the register.

No one was hurt.

The man was described as having dark skin, wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt and wearing a mask over his face.

Redlands police arrested a 30-year-old Rialto man early Saturday morning after he drove through a DUI checkpoint late Friday, crashed his car and ran to his girlfriend's house in Highland.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Bryant Jones was drove his Dodge Charger into the checkpoint on Orange Street near San Bernardino Avenue. He told an officer he had a suspended driver's license and then instead of going into a "screening" area as directed, he drove away, according to a Redlands news release.

Redlands police decided not to pursue Jones because he drove through a red light, into oncoming traffic lanes and was going 100 miles per hour during his escape, according to the release.

Sheriff's deputies soon called Redlands police with information that Jones crashed and overturned his car when he reached Boulder Avenue via Orange Street. Then he ran on foot to his girlfriend's house, where police found him.

Jones did have a suspended license for driving under the influence, in addition to more than $300,000 worth of arrest warrants for DUI.

He was taken to Central Detention Center in San Bernardino.
rollover.jpgFive people were injured when the car they were in left the westbound 10 Freeway in Redlands and rolled over Thursday not long after noon.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, was able to get out of the car east of Mountain View Avenue and refused medical treatment, according to a Redlands news release.

Firefighters had to extricate the four other people inside. They all received more
serious injuries and had to be taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center. A
27-year-old woman had serious head and chest injuries. A four-year-old boy received
moderate lacerations and abrasions. Two other women, 27 and 22, also suffered moderate injuries.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating.

Trial proceedings are underway for Mario "Stomper" Valderrama, who allegedly took a four-foot long shotgun to collect a $150 debt from a Redlands man, shot him dead and left in the man's Chrysler PT Cruiser in 2004.

Lawyers in the case of the 25-year-old Valderrama announced they were ready for trial and then argued pretrial motions Wednesday in San Bernardino Superior Court, according to the District Attorney's Office.

Valderrama is charged with killing Keith Parks, 46, in a empty lot near the 100 block of 10th Street in Redlands on July 17, 2004. Emergency personnel found Parks' body with a gunshot wound to the chest, and he died at a local hospital.

Proceedings are expected to resume today with more motions, according to Deputy District Attorney Douglas Poston. It was unknown when lawyers' opening remarks and witness testimony might begin.
