The final numbers are in concerning traffic deaths and DUI arrests in the state and Los Angeles County during the Thanksgiving holiday.

California Highway Patrol officers recorded the statistics from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday.

In California, 32 traffic deaths were reported, compared to the 41 people who died throughout the sate last year, said Heather Hoglund, public information officer for the CHP, Southern Division.

"Statewide, the numbers look encouraging in terms of fatalities," Hoglund said.

The number of traffic deaths in Los Angeles County this year was eight, which did not change from last year.

CHP also arrested 1,530 people on suspicion of drunken driving throughout the state this year, compared to 1,628 in 2007, Hoglund said.

"DUI arrests are down but that could be from a number of factors," she said.

One possibility is that people were more responsible this year, making the decision not to drink and drive. Or it could be that people did not travel as much this holiday, Hoglund said.
In Los Angeles County, CHP officers arrested 331 suspected drunken drivers this year, which is an increase from 320 arrests in 2007.

"DUI arrests are slightly up (in the county)," Hoglund said. "There are a few more drinkers and drivers."

A reservist from Redlands was among 11 members of the armed forces who received a Thanksgiving Day phone call from President Bush.

The White House press office said the president called Sgt. Shannon M. Dyer of Redlands, who is on her second tour of duty in Iraq to train local police.

According to press secretary Dana Perino, the president thanked the troops he called "for being out there and securing our country's future," adding that he was proud of their service.

The people who received calls are stationed around the world, including in Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain.
