Week 9 football results/schedule

|
Carson and Narbonne battled in a crucial Marine League game tonight, and it got off to a thrilling start as each team returned its opening kickoff for a touchdown. Carson went ahead, 21-20, at halftime, then kept alive its goal of an outright league title with a 41-28 victory.
San Pedro celebrated Homecoming with a win against Gardena and stayed on track for no worse than a third-place finish in the Marine League. The Pirates tangle with Carson next week.
Redondo slipped against Palos Verdes Friday afternoon on its way to setting up a possible 4-0 vs. 4-0 duel with rival Mira Costa for the Bay League title, while Mira Costa rolled over Leuzinger to remain on track for an outright title. West Torrance took care of business at Peninsula.
Lawndale lost its first Pioneer League game (to El Segundo, which is primed for a second-place finish) and now closes the regular season against league-leading Centennial (6-3, 4-0) in Week 10.
Mary Star lost to Verbum Dei in a battle of previously unbeaten Camino Real League teams.
Unbeaten Serra rolled to a nonleague victory Saturday to set up a battle of Del Rey League unbeatens with Cathedral next week.

Week 8 football schedule/results

|
League play is heating up and the contenders are starting to distance themselves from the pretenders ... Carson and Banning resumed their tradition-rich rivalry tonight with an entertaining game (Banning led, 17-14, at halftime), while Narbonne took care of Gardena, setting up a monster game next week with Marine League title implications.
Redondo raced to a 21-0 hafltime lead and topped Leuzinger, staying unbeaten in the Bay League. West Torrance dealt a huge blow to Palos Verdes' playoff hopes. Are we headed for a Mira Costa-vs-Redondo showdown for the league title in Week 10? Stay tuned.
It was San Pedro's turn to abuse the Marine League's last-place team, and the Pirates did just that (as Carson and Narbonne did before them). Serra had little trouble with St. Bernard in another expected blowout.
Westchester improved to 3-0 in the Western League and Lawndale topped Torrance to take a giant step toward a playoff berth. El Segundo and Lawndale meet next week, with the winner likely to finish no worse than second in league (Centennial is unbeaten).
Mary Star remains in control of its own destiny in the Camino Real League.

Week 7 football results/schedule

League play continues, as the contenders try to distance themselves from the pretenders.
Mira Costa, Redondo and Leuzinger are all looking to improve to 2-0 in the Bay League, while Narbonne tries to keep pace with Carson (which beat Gardena last night) in the Marine League.
San Pedro and Banning renew one of the area's oldest rivalries, with defending L.A. City Section co-champ San Pedro looking to avoid an 0-2 start to league play.
El Segundo and Centennial might just be the top teams in the Pioneer League this year, so tonight's winner could gain the inside track to a title.
Can anyone in the Del Rey League hang with Serra, or should the Cavaliers and Oaks Christian simply advance directly to what seems like an inevitable meeting in a CIF Southern Section title game in December?
We'll try to get the final scores up as quick as possible. As always, we appreciate your patience.

League play is finally here for most, and Narbonne and San Pedro renew their sometimes-testy rivalry tonight at SPHS. It's their first meeting since the Pirates rallied to tie the Gauchos on the final play of regulation in the L.A. City Section championship game last December.
All three Bay League games should shed some light on just who the title contenders truly are, with surprising West Torrance tangling with defending champion Mira Costa and Leuzinger playing a matinee at Palos Verdes.
Torrance and El Segundo square off in a Pioneer League opener and Banning plays at Gardena against former Banning coach Ed Lalau.

Thumbnail image for Woods.jpgPHOTO BY STEVE MCCRANK: Serra WR Robert Woods, the reigning Daily Breeze Player of the Year, leads one of the best receiving corps in the nation that also includes highly touted George Farmer and Los Alamitos transfer Paul Richardson.

Here is the Daily Breeze Preseason Top 10 poll. Of course, things could all change after the first week's worth of games, but now it's starting to feel like high school football season.

1. Serra (13-1 last season)
Up next: Today, vs. Silverado
Comment: Consider QB Conner Preston a genius for transferring to a team that boasts WRs Robert Woods, George Farmer and Paul Richardson. Expect a lot of offensive fireworks.

2. Narbonne (12-1-1)
Up next: Sept 11, vs. South East
Comment: With games against Long Beach Poly, Mira Costa, Orange Lutheran and Los Alamitos, defending L.A. City co-champion Gauchos are either pretty confident or overly ambitious. Time will tell.

3. Mira Costa (10-4)
Up next: Today, vs. Loyola at L.A. Valley College
Comment: Virtually the entire roster is intact after last season's run to the CIF Southern Section Western Division final. Expect big things from the Mustangs.

4. San Pedro (12-1-1)
Up next: Sept. 11 vs. Santee
Comment: Pirates lost nine of 11 from vaunted defense, but don't sleep on the defending L.A. City Section co-champions. Just ask Narbonne.

5. Carson (5-6)
Up next: Today, at Mater Dei
Comment: Daniel Torres is like the MacGyver of the South Bay: a jack of all trades. He won't let the Colts suffer a second consecutive losing season.

6. Leuzinger (6-4)
Up next: Today, at Hamilton
Comment: Olympians are finally accessorizing. They often get the skill players, but it appears they finally have a line to match.

7. Peninsula (5-6)
Up next: Sept. 11, at Lakewood
Comment: RB Ryan Pierson earned the distinction of the South Bay's busiest workhorse last season, and he should have plenty of room to run behind a sizeable and beefy line.

8. El Segundo (10-3)
Up next: Sept. 11, at West Torrance
Comment: The good news: QB Mike Bundy returns to give the Eagles a shot in the arm. The bad news: mostly everyone else is new.

9. Banning (4-7)
Up next: Sept. 11, at West Adams Prep<QA0>
Comment: Fe Fie Fo Fum. Coach Chris Ferragamo is trying to turn DE Fie Faaituala into a QB. So far, Ferragamo says Faaituala is the school's best QB since Fred Hessen.

10. North Torrance (9-2)
Up next: Sept. 11, vs. Verbum Dei
Comment: The Saxons have plenty of speed, which is a good thing since they have a lot of ground to cover to replace QB B.J. Denker.

ON THE BUBBLE: Redondo, South Torrance, Palos Verdes

Prep Football Preview Schedule

|

The high school football season is upon us. There will be game previews and some features tied to the area's "Week Zero" games this week, but the Daily Breeze's league-by-league season previews are scheduled to run Monday-Thursday next week. Here's the schedule:

Monday: Private/small schools (Bishop Montgomery, Serra, St. Bernard, Mary Star, Chadwick, Rolling Hills Prep, Pacific Lutheran, Animo)

Tuesday: Pioneer League (Torrance, North Torrance, South Torrance, El Segundo, Lawndale, Centennial)

Wednesday: Bay League (Palos Verdes, Peninsula, Leuzinger, Mira Costa, Redondo and West Torrance) and Ocean League (Hawthorne, Inglewood, Morningside, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica)

Thursday: L.A. City Section (Marine League teams San Pedro, Narbonne, Carson, Banning, Gardena, Washington and Western League team Westchester)

Co-title.jpg

PHOTO BY BRAD GRAVERSON: With the new football rule changes implemented by the L.A. City Section, Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas and San Pedro coach Mike Walsh will not be forced to share the City title like last season. Both coaches will also adjust to a new sideline rule that could prove to be aggravating.

A couple of things became pretty clear at Tuesday's L.A. City Section Media Day in downtown Los Angeles.

There will be one City champion per football division this season, and the already high number of flags in City football games will see an even more dramatic rise, at least in the beginning of the season with the addition of a coach's line that coaches will be forced to stand behind during games.

After last season's 21-21 tie between Narbonne and San Pedro in the City final, the City moved swiftly to eliminate the possibility of a championship game ending in a tie, forcing teams to go to an overtime period if the teams are deadlocked after four quarters.

"We will have one champion," Assistant Commissioner John Aguirre said.

The overtimes also will change with the City adopting the NCAA overtime rules that start at the 25-yard-line instead of the 10-yard-line. This was made after Mater Dei blasted the City's overtime rules on national television when Mater Dei and Carson played a triple-overtime thriller last season.

"That probably helped propel that rule change," Aguirre said.

And if you thought there were a lot of flags thrown during an L.A. City Section football game, just wait until you hear about the new coach's line.

Once the ball is live, coaches will need to back up three feet to give officials on the sideline room to move.

"It's for the officials safety -- I know when I coached, I collided with officials myself," said Aguirre, a former Carson football coach.

Coaches have had enough trouble keeping their players behind the player's line, which is always a point of contention during a City football game.

Just like the player's sideline rule, the coaches will get a warning, then a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for a second offense. Remember, if a coach gets two unsportsmanlike penalties, they are ejected from the game.

Expect flags to fly.

Two of the South Bay's top college football recruits continue to rack up the awards.

Reigning Daily Breeze Player of the Year Robert Woods of Serra and Narbonne defensive back Sean Parker have both been named to the Maxpreps Preseason All-State team.

Woods, who recently gave a non-binding verbal commitment to USC, had 1,378 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns with 81 catches last season for Serra, the CIF Southern Section Northwest Division finalist.

Parker, who has received at least 28 scholarship offers, had five interceptions last season to lead Narbonne to the Marine League title and to the L.A. City Section co-title with San Pedro. He can basically write his ticket to college and will be a leader for Narbonne.

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports for more than two years.
