Looks like the South Bay could have a rising boys lacrosse power in Mira Costa.

The Mustangs claimed the Carmel Invitational, going unbeaten in five matches, including a 7-2 victory over Oakland Bishop O'Dowd in the final.

Mira Costa also beat Thacher, 10-4, San Francisco Lick Wilmerding, 11-6, Scotts Valley, 12-0 and Bella Vista of Fair Oaks, 9-3, before dispatching Bishop O'Dowd in the final.

Thomas Farrell had seven goals and 10 assists to lead a high-powered Mira Costa offense. Joe Marielli had nine goals, and Dakota Randall contributed six goals and seven assists for Mira Costa.

Sean Donohue, who was an all-tournament selection, anchored the defense for Mira Costa.

"It was a great team effort with unselfish play and solid interior passing," Coach Dave Vinci said.

Palos Verdes went 1-3 on the weekend in a higher division, beating Cathedral but sustaining losses to St. Margaret's, Atherton Menlo and Rancho Bernardo. Mullen beat Rancho Bernardo in the bracket final.

Tony Ciniglio

Tony Ciniglio is an 11-year veteran at the Daily Breeze and is the Prep-JC Editor. Ciniglio graduated from Malibu High (home of the mighty Sharks) in 1997 as part of the school's second graduating class before attending powerhouse Pepperdine (Class of 2001), thus shattering any reader's preconceived notion that he has any personal bias when it comes to South Bay Preps.

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe was a self-proclaimed, slightly above average baseball player back in the day at Torrance's West High, who went on and had an unspectacular, injury-riddled stint as a third baseman at El Camino College. Trading bat for pen, Thorpe wrote sports for the Long Beach Union newspaper at Long Beach State University, then worked as the sports editor for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News for seven years before climbing down the Hill to the Daily Breeze, where he has been a sports writer covering local sports for more than two years.
