Of all the big-name stars who have graced the Lewis Family Playhouse stage, Edward James Olmos, who spoke Friday night, might very well be the coolest. And it was free to see him!
On his Chicano identity while growing up in East L.A.: "I knew exactly who I was, I was never confused."
On his grandmother, who swept the dirt floor of their garage: "I would say, 'Grandma, it's dirt.' And she'd say, 'But we're gonna have the cleanest dirt.' "
On Raymond Kurzweil's book "Singularity is Near": "Read that book. The preface stunned me."
On aging: "I'm going to live until I'm 120 and if I don't, I'm gonna die trying."
On the city that hosted him: "Whenever you tell someone where you live, you should say 'Cucamonga. ... We've got a great library.' "Read the complete story from today's paper.
Perhaps it's too early to talk about Christmas. (It's going to be 103 today!) But it's never too early to fine tune your cockney accent.
Auditions for "A Christmas Carol" are coming up next week. Auditions for actors will be 2 p.m. Oct. 3; 6 p.m. Oct. 5 for carolers. All roles require cockney and English accents.
No prepared monologues are required; just come prepared to read from the script. Copies of the play are available at the Biane Library.
The play will be staged at the Lewis Family Playhouse Dec. 3 to 14.

Did anyone catch Judy Collins on NPR's Talk of the Nation last night? The folk singer's voice lulled me to slumber. Her interview/performance was perhaps a preview to her scheduled appearance at the Lewis Family Playhouse April 24.

Mayor Don Kurth was faster than the City Hall's press release creators when he broke the news on his Twitter feed that the library just received a $40,000 grant for the next Big Read. "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "The Maltese Falcon" were the books from the last two reading initiatives. I wonder which book we'll pour over this year.
Kurth's Twitter also talked about the unveiling of next season's lineup at the Lewis Family Playhouse. The schedule has not been officially released but I hear Judy Collins and The Pointer Sisters will lead the lineup.

Protests calling for an end to Chinese rule in Tibet have been staged around the world today, the 50th anniversary of the uprising that resulted in the exile of the Dalai Lama.Americans' interest in the Free Tibet movement tends to come in waves and this year, interest is piqued once again. The spiritual leader is now 73 years old and nobody is certain who will replace the Dalai Lama and what the future holds for Tibetans. As China grows into its role as an economic superpower, that question becomes more pressing.
That is the subject of Rick Ray's "10 Questions for the Dalai Lama," a documentary to be screened Tuesday at the Lewis Family Playhouse.
Ray believes Tibetan Buddhism is at a crossroads because the Chinese government will insist on picking the Dalai Lama's successor, while Tibetans will, no doubt, pick their own. That could result in a split in Tibetan Buddhism.
"Sort of like a Shiite/Sunni split," Ray said. "I wish I can say I'm very optimistic because I'm an optimistic person. But I don't think I've very optimistic."
Ray will be available for a Q & A following the movie. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online or by calling (909) 477-2752.
This is not some Dr. Seuss musical you can bring your children to. In fact, you should probably get a sitter for this one.
Anyone who has seen the Johnny Depp version of "Sweeney Todd" knows this is a dark, grim tale about a lunatic barber who you probably don't want styling your hair. This production is the first for Broadway at the Gardens, a theater project hoping to bring something edgier to the Lewis Family Playhouse stage.
There will be 7:30 p.m. performances on Feb. 27, 28, Mar. 6, 7 and 2 p.m. performances on Mar. 1 and 8. Tickets, available online, are $33.50; $31.50 for youth and seniors.
