Update on Victoria Gardens newcomers

Nestle.JPGIs it harder to find a job if you're not into Facebook?

It seems like it, especially if you want to work for Nestle. The cookie joint is gearing up to open at the end of the year at Victoria Gardens. This sign is posted in front of the shop, which is across from Starbucks.

Several newcomers have opened at the mall, including Dukez (Men's apparel), Swee'Ts (funnel cakes and other carnival food), Raylight-Flashwear (clothes that light up) and Gelato Ice & Bites.

Two sit-down restaurants, Paisanos and Candelas, are expected to open at the end of the year or in January. Paisanos, an Italian restaurant, will be near AMC. Candelas, a Mexican restaurant, will be near Fleming's.

It looks like Victoria Gardens will have a Chipotle in the future. A liquor license notice is seen posted at a shop near Pinkberry.

Happy Birthday, Rancho Cucamonga

In case you missed the Founder's
Day Parade on Saturday, check out Staff Photographer Mediha Fejzagic Dimartino's photo gallery.

Highlights included this giant Woody, a 400-member high school marching band, a beauty queen float with Miss Baby Alta Loma and a cute boy impersonating "Twilight" actor Robert Pattinson with a gang of screaming girls behind him.

For the second year in a row, I helped announce the parade participants as they passed by Macy's. Without reading the 94-page script ahead of time, I made all sorts of mistakes like calling the Angelina Jolie impersonator Octomom and calling the police chief "fire chief." (Sorry, Chief Cuisimano!)

*  *  *

Having covered the city for only four years, I only know the parade as a Victoria Gardens affair. My friend and Alta Loma old timer Catherine Bridge informed me that the very first community parade was hosted by the Alta Loma Community Chamber of Commerce before the city was incorporated and went along Base LineHighland Avenue. Bridge and her husband, Arthur, a former councilman, had an entry with their fruit truck and an assortment of smudge pots. Their circa-1938 fire truck was also on display, a crowd pleaser just as much as this 40-foot flying cowboy.

Free (late) lunch tomorrow

Jamba Juice, located at Victoria Gardens near Starbucks, will offer free flatbreads to the first 150 customers starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The new California Flatbread comes in four flavors -- Tomo Artichoko, Smokehouse Chicken, Mediterran Yum and Four Cheesy.

It's official, Christmas is here

Tree.JPGWorkers hoisted this 50-feet tall White Fir at Victoria Gardens this morning. It should be decorated by Friday.

Let's hope the Santa Anas don't come.

If you're there checking out the tree, head over to the food court where a new carousel has been installed. Rides are $2.50.

Note: The carousel is at the food court but it's not operating yet. Look for it later in the month. By the way, it's hand-painted from Italy.

Paisano to move into Victoria Gardens

| | Comments (5) |
That lonely void left by Sisley's at Victoria Gardens will soon be filled.

Italian restaurant Paisano is leaving its Fontana location and moving next to Lucille's at Victoria Gardens. The eatery is expected to open mid-December, said Masa Liles, director of marketing for Victoria Gardens.

Plenty of benefits at Benefit party

If you shop at the Victoria Garden's Macy's, you might have noticed Benefit Cosmetics, the company that etched out a sizable corner of the department store. It's sort of a store within a store.

Benefit is marking its one-year anniversary at the Vic with a party on Oct. 9 and 10 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Customers can get makeup tips with refreshments and music. Waxing and lash services will be offered.

A $50 purchase will get you a free gift; a $100 purchase will get your hair styled.

Just show up or make an appointment by calling (909) 646-3333 ext. 3111.

Support your future community garden

Organizers for the Rancho Cucamonga Community Garden will be at a couple of events to raise funds and dispense gardening advice. Check them out at this weekend's Grape Harvest Festival (at Victoria Gardens Friday night and all day Saturday and Sunday) and at the Mainstreet Marketplace (at Victoria Gardens every Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. for the rest of this month).

The garden folks will be selling baked goods, seedlings, plant kits and flower pots. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions. Groundbreaking for the garden, to be located at the Edison corridor near Day Creek and Foothill, is planned later this month.

Meet the mayor is Sunday

| | Comments (0) |
Mayor Don Kurth will host his monthly "Meet The Mayor" at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Victoria Gardens from 1 to 3 p.m. this Sunday. For those residents vexed by the parking situation near Chaffey College or Cucamonga Canyon, this might be a good time to grab his ear.

This event was canceled.

New number for VG street fair

| | Comments (0) |
If you are interested in being one of the vendors at the Victoria Gardens Mainstreet Marketplace, call the mall's marketing department at (909) 646-8958. The Wednesday street fair allows artists and retailers to showcase items in a farmer's market type of environment.

In a story printed July 24, the contact number was listed for the company Moderustic, which was scheduling all the vendors. But Moderustic and the mall have parted ways.

Back-to-school event at VG

I can't believe school's already back in session. What happened to summer?

Victoria Gardens Cultural Center is hosting a Back-to-School Bash Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be games, crafts and other entertainment. Rudy's Radical Science show starts at 5 p.m. The event is geared for children ages 5 to 11.

Mayor's coffee event this Sunday

Don Kurth's "Meet the Mayor" event is Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf at Victoria Gardens.

The mayor said many residents expressed their concerns over the future of health care when he attended National Night Out events earlier this week. You can share your thoughts with him this afternoon. The city is looking to host a town hall meeting soon on this topic with Rep. David Dreier.

Donate your pennies at Penneys

The YMCA is hoping you might have spare change to give.

From Wednesday to Aug. 15, shoppers at the Victoria Gardens JCPenney can "round up" their purchase total to the next dollar and donate it to after-school programs at the Rancho/Fontana YMCA. The JCPenney Afterschool Fund will match the donations.

The new pedestrian fair on South Mainstreet features more than 40 vendors every Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m. through October.

The featured story in the newly designed City News today featured Mainstreet Marketplace at Victoria Gardens, the pedestrian fair on South Mainstreet that started this month.

I took an after dinner stroll there on Wednesday, my second time visiting, and was surprised to see businesses that I didn't see the first time. If you enjoy walking through all the exhibit halls at the county fair, you might like the mall's latest addition.

I briefly contemplated buying five bars of handmade soap and a flower pot in the shape of a turtle but I talked myself out of it. But I watched many others buying all sorts of goods they don't need, perhaps an early sign that the mall is inching its way out of the recession.

On the agenda: nothing

Tonight's Planning Commission meeting has been canceled.

My suggestion for the five-member commission: go to Victoria Gardens, where there will be taiko drumming at 6 p.m. and a pedestrian fair until 9 p.m.
