South Bay, morning! It's Sept. 25

|
Readers, let's hop to it:

A fire broke out at a Wilmington refinery this morning.

A loving and handy father brought a world wonder to his Redondo Beach daughter's backyard wedding. So sweet.

The family of a man shot and killed by Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies last month in Carson have filed suit against the agency.

Just as the city of Torrance nearly wraps up extensive roadwork to its namesake boulevard, it moves along to Crenshaw Boulevard.

Veteran newswoman Toni Sciacqua is the Daily Breeze's new editor. Why don't you follow her on Twitter, and wish her congratulations?

The latest bank robbers with cutesy names wanted by the FBI? The Bedtime Bandits, who use pillow cases when they steal from banks, including three in the South Bay.

Today's At Work column profiles a woman who runs a San Pedro construction business.

Make sure you check out the Breeze's Top 10 list of prep football teams.
South Bay, let's get this news party started:

Redondo Beach police Tuesday night raided a Torrance home apparently chockablock with several thousand tons of illegal fireworks.

Speaking of which, why don't you check out our list of safe and legal ways South Bay cities are celebrating the Fourth of July this weekend?

A 24-year-old man fell to his death Tuesday night off Point Fermin cliffs in San Pedro.

An 88-year-old Westchester man this week will retire from Northrop Grumman after working their 68 years. How's that for follow-through? Check out pictures of Jerry Huben's rocking retirement party.

Los Angeles-area tourist attractions are seeing more local patronage now that residents are sticking closer to home during the recession. (Do I get extra points for not using the term "staycation?")

The financially troubled state today stops reimbursing medical clinics that offer services like dental, optometry and acupuncture to low-income patients. Also, no new children will be enrolled into the Healthy Familes program after July 17.

That gentleman who tried to trade a lost dog for sex this weekend now faces extortion charges. Seems like a whole lot of trouble for a date.

You know, after I post this blog, I'll Tweet it as well over. Check out this list to find other Breeze staffers and South Bay folks to follow on Twitter.

Readers, it's Friday. Need I say more?

Saturday marks the 50th run of the Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade. And though patriotism has ebbed and flowed throughout the years, volunteer work is what's really powered the endeavor all this time.

A Hermosa Beach couple is chronicling the stories of World War II veterans to ensure their stories remain in tact. See some pictures of the subjects.

The Manhattan Beach Police Department paid tribute Thursday to the three officers killed in duty throughout the department's history. Check out some pictures of the ceremony.

Car Pros Chrysler Jeep in Carson is one of the 789 dealerships set to close nationwide as the automaker downsizes.

More bad economy news: El Segundo aerospace powerhouse Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems will lay off about 100 employees, executives announced Thursday.

And finally, Breeze education writer Vu Nguyen remains on life support and in a coma but is not expected to survive after going into cardiac arrest last weekend. Needless to say, the mood in our usually lively newsroom is somber in his absence.

Vu covered most of our local school districts, and also contributed to the School Notebook blog. In addition to all that, he was the sweetest man, kind and thoughtful, with an amazing sense of humor. He loved his family, apologized when he swore and, best of all, loved a good newspaper story. We miss him deeply here, and wish his wife and family well.

Readers, nothing cures a post- Cinco de Mayo hangover like cold, stark news:

Possibly the most bizarre story I've read in a while: Police say a Hawthorne motorist hit a pedestrian, dragged the injured woman into her car and sped away with her screaming inside, leading police on a high-speed chase that ended at her home, where two small children were left alone.

The latest on the Jane Harman wiretapping saga.

Rancho Palos Verdes is considering a short-term $8 million loan to help a fledgling luxury resort open in this dismal economy.

Daily Breeze graphic artist Paul Penzella and staff photographer Brad Graverson both won awards this week from the Associated Press for their respective work. We always knew we were good, but now we have proof.

Finally some good local economy news: A $75 million contract with a Swiss aerospace company will generate almost two dozen jobs for a Gardena company.

San Pedro's girls softball team stole the title Tuesday from Carson.  Check out pictures of what prep sports writer Tony Ciniglio called an "improbable victory."
Here's what's happening this morning, readers:

Have you filed your taxes yet? If not, here's a list of local post offices that will be open late to enable your procrastination.

As a sort of related matter, protesters will rally today against increasing state and federal taxes at several California locations, including Marina del Rey and Dockweiler state beach.

More than 250 port workers were kept from their jobs Tuesday when they didn't have the correct identification required under a new security program that just kicked in.

The Los Angeles city attorney is going after real estate agents and loan brokers who allegedly scammed a Harbor Gateway couple, as part of a larger mission to reach out to homeowners who have been victimized by shady agents and lenders.

We have more details on Clelia Flores, the El Segundo woman accused of operating a $23 million Ponzi scheme that targeted Latino investors.

Add another one to the list: Z Gallerie, a Gardena-based home goods store, has filed for bankruptcy.

North Torrance High's Andre Turoldo is the Daily Breeze's boys soccer player of the year. His coach, Matt Chavez, takes the crown for coaching duties, and see pictures of the All-Area team here.

The Breeze is on Day 4 of no working office phones. If you need us, send an E-mail. Here's a list of all newsroom contacts.
Shall we, readers?

Passover begins tonight at sunset.

Here's some good-ish news for you: Deaths from heart surgeries at local hospitals ranked about average, according to an annual state report released this week.

Looks like a familiar face is coming to the Port of Los Angeles: former state Assemblyman Wally Knox is set to be the port's new general manager.

Torrance police are embracing technology -- and a $5,000 reward -- to help find the culprits behind a rash of BB gun-smashed windows. The department is using Twitter to spread the word for information about the crimes as @TorrancePD.

Get a head start on South Bay high schools' boy's track and field season.

Here's what's happening out there today:

Carson has a crime hat trick Wednesday: An officer-involved shooting in which no one was injured, a man found dead from blunt-forced trauma, and another guy stabbed to death. And all are apparently unrelated.

Northrop Grumman will slash 750 jobs, the South Bay aerospace giant announced Wednesday.

A Wilmington man was charged with vandalism for scrawling in big letters a pretty vulgar phrase directed at his father on the wall of a school. Hey, what the @#$% happened to no-cussing week?

A Harbor Gateway gang member pleaded guilty Wednesday to charges that he shot into a car full of people, hitting a little boy, exactly a year ago.

We have a bevy of post-election coverage here.

Morningside High's boys basketball team is back on top with the help of guard A.J. Harris. Check out some pictures here.

Here's a look at what's going on out there on this hazy Monday:

In exchange for pleading guilty to molesting some kids, former Peninsula High School coach Barry Sacks was sentenced this morning to 60 days in jail, five years of probation, permanent sex offender status, 30 days community service  and 52 weeks of sex offender counseling. Courts maven Denise Nix will have a bigger story later today.

A man was found stabbed to death Sunday morning at Banning Park in Wilmington.

Despite an economic and real estate downturn, backers of the massive Terranea housing development in Rancho Palos Verdes are gearing up for its June development, which seemingly popped up overnight.

What's a senior citizen gotta do to get a smoke these days in El Segundo? After complaints of second-hand smoke at the city-run Park Vista retirement home, El Segundo has issued an immediate ban on puffing in common areas, and smoking in private residences is illegal as of December 2009.

The public can weigh in on redevelopment plans for San Pedro's waterfront at 6 p.m. tonight.

At home, Rancho Palos Verdes resident Lauren Palmer has a cat and two goldfish. At work in San Pedro, she cares for injured seals and sea lions.

And here some stuff you might have missed over the weekend:

A Manhattan Beach woman is working to build a 40-acre ranch that will provide work opportunities, group exercise activities and art therapy for children with disabilities, like her 15-year-old son who has long battled epilepsy.

Los Angeles Police Department's new $35 million station in Wilmington is set to open in January, but we give you a sneak peek.

Not to toot our own horns, but Daily Breeze photogs Scott Varley and Brad Graverson, as well as a former reporter were honored Saturday for their work by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. Also reporter Gene Maddaus received an honorable mention, as did staff artist Paul Penzella. Just think, you get all that talent for just a quarter a day -- or free online!

Breeze staffers go to Denver

|

We're sending three journalists to the Democratic National Convention in Denver to help shore up the ranks of The Denver Post, another MediaNews paper. The Post is planning extra coverage and special sections during next week's big show, so a few months ago the editors put out a plea for help to the rest of the chain. And, of course, we're team players. Here's who we're sending to help carry the load for the Breeze:

  • Gene Maddaus, reporter, covers politics and Carson for us
  • Sean Hiller, photographer
  • Walter Hammerwold, copy editor and page designer

We don't know what their assignments in Denver are going to be just yet, but I've asked them to keep an eye on the South Bay attendees and report in on this blog.
