The California Prison Health Care Receivership Corporation's (CPR) office will hold a public scoping meeting on Thursday, November 20 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Chino Community Building, located at 5443 B Street.

People with questions or concerns regarding the proposed medical/mental health facility that could house up to 2,100 additional inmates on the California Institution for Men property are encouraged to attend the meeting.

City officials are concerned about resident safety with the increase of prisoners, in addition to traffic and infrastructure issues with the new medical center.

The Chino chapter of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) held an informational protest in front of the California Institutions for Men (CIM) on Saturday in opposition to a recent reduction of prison guards.

Protesters were there to provide information to the local community alerting them to concerns raised by the elimination of 37 correctional officer positions from the prison. The organization is urging the public to call CIM warden Mike Poulos to encourage the warden to "put Chino's public safety first."

According to the California Correctional Peace Officer's Association, CIM is understaffed and holds double the amount of inmates it was designed to hold. The reduced number of peace officers at the prison has led to a number of riots and murders, according to the CCPOA.

The CCPOA said fewer corrections officers will mean the prison will be less able to take care of itself and future incidents will continue to rely on local taxpayer-funded police and fire services because the prison will have even fewer correctional officers and will be less able to take care of itself.

Inmates from the California Institution for Men contributed $4,876.70 to the City of Chino, New Direction program, an organization that provides help for victims of domestic violence, during a presentation to the Chino City Council last evening.

The contribution, which was presented by CIM Warden Mike Poulos and Scott Perkins, manager of Joint Venture Program for the Prison Industry Authority, represented 20 percent of the wages earned by inmates who work for Earthwise Recycling, which converts stale bread and other bakery goods into cattle feed.

"Providing jobs for inmates gives them skills that are necessary to help ensure their success when they are released from prison," said Mike Poulos, warden for the California Institution for Men. "In addition, this provides a means for inmates to recognize the harm they have done to victims of their crimes. It also serves in the rehabilitation of inmates."

Warden Poulos said the donation was made possible from the collaborative efforts between the California Institution for Men, the Prison Industries Authority and the Joint Venture Program (Earthwise Recycling).
