Chino Valley Independent Fire District firefighters responded to three fire calls on Jan. 15. At 7:36 a.m., firefighters were called out to Grand and Roswell avenues to extinguish a plastic fuel can on fire. At 8:57 a.m., firefighters responded to a rubbish fire on Lanier Road in Chino. When firefighters arrived they found a trash container on fire. The fire was contained to the container and extinguished. The fire resulted in a $100 property loss. At 12:14 p.m., firefighters responded to a rubbish fire on Grant Street in Chino at which a resident was burning "sensitive" papers. Fire was extinguished and resident was advised that burning papers was against code. The district responded to a rubbish fire at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the 13000 block of 4th Street in Chino. Firefighters arrived on scene to find paper and tree debris on fire inside a shopping cart behind the addresses building. The fire was extinguished and scene was cleared.

Chino Valley Independent Fire District Firefighters responded to a total of 21 calls for Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009. Among the calls was a Hazardous materials call on 5000 Shafer Avenue in Chino. Hazmat arrived to find a one gallon glass container 1/3 full of Dichloromethane.

It was found to be a toxic paint thinner. The container was clearly marked and had no signs of leakage. A private company was contacted to properly dispose of the chemical.

Firefighters on Thursday morning responded to a trash to the 7000 block of Yeager Street in Chino where a resident was burning old paper and magazines on cement walkway at 10:24 a.m. The fire was extinguished and the resident was advised about not burning rubbish.

A small vegetation fire was reported on 3:28 p.m. on Norton Avenue at Rushmore Ct. in Chino. The fire was approximately 17-feet-by-17-feet along a block wall of residences. The fire consumed dead leaves and bushes along the roadway. Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be arson. Two juvenile suspects were taken into custody.

A fire was reported on Maplewood Drive in Chino Hills which was found to be a five inch in diameter burn mark with ash near a garage. There was no structural damage and the fire was already out when firefighters arrived.

Chino Valley Independent Fire District firefighters responded to a report of a fire by locals in a single-family dwelling on the 400 block of Torrey Pines in Chino Hills at 4:14 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26.

Upon investigation, firefighters found that a candle placed ina fiberglass enclosure along with other Christmas decorations caused the early-morning blaze. The candle in the fiberglass caught the decorations and the enclosure itself on fire.

Residents were alerted of the fire by a smoke detector. The home owners extinguished the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived. One occupant sustained minor smoke inhalation.

Fire Chief Paul Benson encourages residents about the importance of having working smoke detectors in the home. By properly selecting, placing, testing, and maintaining smoke detectors, residents greatly increase the chances of surviving a home fire.

The Chino Valley Professional Firefighters' Association is looking to the community to help sponsor its 2008 Make A Child Smile Program. The sponsorship allows businesses, associations, or civic groups the opportunity to bring the spirit of giving to needy children. All proceeds are tax-deductible and go directly towards the implementation the Make A Child Smile family of programs.

Chino Hills City Hall will close for the last time at 2001 Grand Avenue at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30. City Hall will remain closed on Friday, Oct. 31 and Monday, Nov. 3. The new City Hall building will open to the public at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 4, nearly 17 years after Chino Hills became a city on Nov. 5, 1991.

The entire operation will be moved between Friday and Monday to the new 59,000 square foot. Government Center City Hall building, located at 14000 City Center Drive. City Hall telephone numbers will not change. The Chino Valley Fire administration will follow the same schedule that City Hall is following with their plan to move to their new 16,000 square foot building located at 14011 City Center Drive with an opening on Nov. 4.

The Recreation Division will maintain offices at the Civic Center Community Building, 2001 Grand Avenue and will continue to offer classes and programs at the location. Registration for classes will be accepted at both the old location and at the new City Hall. The James S. Thalman Library is expected to relocate to their new 28,000 square foot location in January of 2009.

The Chino Valley Independent Fire District honored those who died in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 with a ceremony Thursday at Station 66 in Chino Hills.

About 40 people, including uniformed and non-uniformed employees, fire district board members and an honor guard, attended the annual event. A prayer was said and flags were lowered to half-staff. A wreath was also set in front of the station's memorial.

Pete Morales, a firefighter-paramedic with the fire district, said it was important to remember.

"It's about never forgetting the tragedy that happened on 9/11," he said.
