An encounter on the freeway

This e-mail has been posted on snopes.com and also on the Whittier Police Blog. Snopes has a Jan. 21 date on the e-mail.

Whittier Police spokesman Jason Zuhlke said a report was taken of the incident but police did not tell the writer that a lot of carjackings were happening.

The only carjacking Whittier Police handled recently was the attempted carjacking of a pregnant woman on Lambert Road at Greenleaf Avenue on Dec. 29.

"I am sending this to all of you, per the advice of the Whittier Police. Last night on my way home from work, I was followed off the freeway without realizing it.  A lot of people take the Telegraph off ramp to go home.  Then I turned left on Norwalk going north.  This Van pulled up on my right side and told me that my right rear tire was going flat and that I should pull over and let him put my spare on. I was only 2 miles from home and in an industrial area where no gas stations, etc. so told him NO THANKS, and kept going slow the rest of the way home.  When I got home I told Richard what had happened and he checked my tire...  The tire was perfectly OK. That's when I realized what had happened and it scared me to death. According to the Police there are allot of car jacking going on, then they rob you of everything (money, jewelry, etc) due to the economy. The best thing I could do was to let the gals at work know to be more than careful of their surroundings.  It's happening all over So Cal , not just LA or Orange Counties .
Please my friends, be very careful out there."

Carjacker suspect update

No arrests have been made yet in the Dec. 29 attempted carjacking of a pregnant woman at Greenleaf Avenue and Lambert Road.

One of the suspects hit the woman several times in the head and punched her in the stomach. She was later checked at a hospital. Police said the baby is OK.

Whittier Police think the two would-be carjackers fled when they realized the woman was pregnant. A composite of the suspect who hit the victim was released last week. The story with the sketch ran in the paper on Saturday. A local television station also aired the sketch this week.

The man was described as a Latino in his 30s, 5 feet 8 inches tall and of thin build. His head is shaved and on his neck are two tattoos. One is possibly a woman's name in cursive letters and the other is a tattoo of red lips.

Police debunk attempt kidnapping report

Whittier police say the reported attempted kidnapping of a 12-year-old boy Tuesday night at the Quad didn't happen.

Police spokesman Jason Zuhlke said the boy told detectives he made the story up.

The alleged incident was reported about 5 p.m., yesterday. The boy told police he was skateboarding and took a break in a secluded spot. He was allegedly approached by a man who dragged him into the back seat of a car. He jumped out of the car when it stopped at a light. The man reportedly chased him but he eluded his pursuer.

     That story was debunked today.

Zuhlke said the boy was allegedly spitting on a car. The driver asked him what he was doing and followed the boy who took off on his skateboard, according to Zuhlke. Whoever the man was then left.

Whittier Police are talking to several "people of interest" but haven't made any arrest in the case, according to department spokesman Jason Zuhlke.

Investigators from Whittier Police and the sheriff's Norwalk station are looking for a Latino in his 50s with graying hair and mustache who drives a  '90s model red pickup truck, possibly a Toyota. He tried to entice five girls by offering them a ride or gesturing for them to get into his pickup. The incidents happened in Santa Fe Springs and Norwalk.

Anyone with information is asked to call Whittier Police at (562) 945-8250 or sheriff's Detective Debra Jaime at (562) 466-5443.
