Ron Hornaday Jr., the reigning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion and driver for Kevin Harvick Inc., will be in Mexico City this weekend for the Nationwide Series race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
This will be the first of five Nationwide Series races for Hornaday. He will be in the team's No. 33 Chevrolet for the Mexico City and Montreal races. He will be in the team's No. 77 car for the races at Daytona in July, Kansas in September and Texas in November.
Hornaday was in the NASCAR race, when it was known as the Busch Series, in Mexico City in 2005. He started 21st and finished 12th. Both tracks in Mexico City and Montreal are road courses.
“Mexico is a little bit longer than Montreal, but Montreal has a few more turns," said Hornaday Jr., a former Saugus Speedway champ from Palmdale. "Mexico has the chicanes and it can be tricky because you come down the straight-a-way full speed, cross the start-finish line and then you have slow down really quickly so you don’t over-shoot your turn. At Montreal, they have that hair-pin turn and you have cars that get all bunched up trying to pass each other.”
The car Hornaday's team is taking to Mexico City was in three races last year. Ron Fellows drove the car at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and Watkins Glen International in New York. Fellows finished 32nd at Mexico City due to engine trouble, fourth in Montreal and 24th at the Glen.
Hornaday will be the road-course specialist for the team this year.
“I like road-course racing because you get the chance to race against some of the best drivers in the world," Hornaday said. "It’s challenging because you’re turning left and right while braking and shifting. That is probably the most challenging part, making sure you hit your marks and get your timing down when you shift going into and out of the turns.”
Rain postponed the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Auto Club Speedway for two days. The race was supposed to be on Saturday, part of a doubleheader with the Craftsman Truck Series. But rain scrapped those plans. Then the Nationwide Series race was rescheduled for Sunday after the Sprint Cup Series race, but rain again prevented the race from starting.
The Nationwide Series race was eventually rescheduled for Monday morning. As a result, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, site of next weekend's NASCAR races, has offered a deal for those who had tickets for the races at Auto Club Speedway.
Those who present ticket stubs for the Nationwide Series Stater Bros. 300 can buy tickets for the Nationwide Series Sam's Town 300 race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for $25.
“We’re making this gesture to do our part to help the series grow,” Las Vegas Motor Speedway president Chris Powell said. “While we have sold more than 100,000 tickets to the Sam’s Town 300 this Saturday, we have plenty of room to accommodate those loyal race fans who have endured the poor weather in Southern California.”
Three drivers will share driving duties in the No. 33 Chevrolet for Kevin Harvick Inc. in the newly named NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2008.
Owner Kevin Harvick will drive 22 of the 35 Nationwide Series races in the No. 33 car. Cale Gale will be in the car for 11 races and Ron Hornaday Jr. will be in it for two.
“I’m really looking forward to racing for KHI in the Nationwide Series in 2008,” said Harvick, who also drives in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Richard Childress Racing. “This will be the first year that I will only race for KHI in this series. My goal is to go out and be consistent, competitive and win races for KHI.”
Harvick has won two championships in the Busch Series, the former name of the Nationwide Series. Hornaday has three NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championships, his latest coming in 2007. Gale is a developmental driver for Harvick.
“To share seat time with Kevin and Ron, I couldn’t ask for better teammates,” Gale said. “I can go to both of these guys for help in the car on every track and they can give me great tips based on their experiences in the Truck, Cup and Nationwide Series. I’m really excited and look forward to a great year at KHI.”
Returning in 2008 as sponsors on the No. 33 KHI Chevrolet will be Camping World and RoadLoans.com.
