How to run a secure e-mail session with Fastmail.fm

| | Comments (0) |

Fastmail.fm offers a completely secure Webmail session. just type in https://fastmail.fm (remember the "s") instead of http://fastmail.fm, and your entire e-mail session, from login to logout, will be encrypted.

This is especially important when you're using an open, public WiFi connection. Even Gmail's secure option (https://gmail.com) has been shown to be faulty, since cookies are saved on the local machine that can be extracted to reveal your login and password.

I'm not sure how Fastmail.fm stacks up in this regard, but I have a good feeling that it is more secure in https mode.

By the way: I use my DSL Extreme Webmail quite a bit because it is also encrypted. But the site doesn't work with Netscape 4.8, which I use on the 12-year-old Powerbook 1400cs. Luckily Fastmail.fm does.

Fastmail.fm remains the best Web-based e-mail for Macintosh System 7.6.1

Mail clients? I've tried them all, there's really nothing that works with Mac's old System 7. None of them can seem to handle the "modern" IMAP and POP protocols. One exception is the mail-client portion of Netscape 4 (just about any version). But it's so slow ...

And with Netscape 4.8 (absolutely the most modern Web browser available for System 7.6.1, with Internet Explorer 5 being a close second), most Web-based e-mail services work poorly as well. I can pretty much get Yahoo! Mail to work, but there's a service that works very well indeed with Netscape 4 and System 7.6.1.

That service is Fastmail.fm. The Web interface is quick, clear and, I believe, somewhat programmable to fit your browser requirements.

I reactivated my old Fastmail.fm account today when I pulled out the Powerbook 1400cs, and it's refreshingly easy to use.

About this blog

New ways to sign in to comment: I just added the ability for prospective commenters on this blog to sign in using their AOL, Yahoo! and Wordpress.com accounts (for the past 200 posts anyway ... more than that will take an extensive, middle-of-the-night rebuild). That's in addition to the other sign-in choices, which include starting a Movable Type account on this blog, Typekey, OpenID, Live Journal and Vox. If you have trouble getting your Movable Type account verified, or any of the other sign-in options are not working properly, please e-mail me. With these added ways of signing in, there's more reason than ever for you to make a comment (or several!).

Steven Rosenberg aims to learn what he does not know. He writes about it here.
