Getting back to yesterday's great open forum questions...

KEVIN WESTGARTH
This season: 9 games, 0 goals, 0 assists, 9 penalty minutes, 5:02 average ice time.
The good: Westgarth, the Kings' second Princeton-educated enforcer, had developed a solid reputation in Manchester for his willingness to mix it up. Westgarth, mentioned as a probably successor to Raitis Ivanans, got his first chance in mid-January, not so coincidentally, after the incident against Tampa Bay when the Kings didn't respond to a hit on Drew Doughty. Westgarth got another call in March after Ivanans suffered an injury.
The bad: It's hard to make too much of two brief NHL stints, but Westgarth didn't really do anything to force the Kings to keep him on the roster. His size (6-foot-5) and willingness to drop the gloves allow him to fill a prescribed role, but what did he really show beyond that? Westgarth had 10 points in 65 games in Manchester this season.
Going forward: Westgarth is a restricted free agent this summer, and Ivanans remains under contract for one more season and a paltry $600,000. At 25, Westgarth still has time to improve, and there's a decent chance that, a year from now, Westgarth will inherit that spot from Ivanans. At this point, is there enough of a difference between Ivanans and Westgarth to justify making a change in that spot?

TEDDY PURCELL
This season: 40 games, 4 goals, 12 assists, 4 penalty minutes, 13:31 average ice time.
The good: Purcell had 16 goals in 38 games with Manchester and, at times, showed that offensive touch with the Kings. Purcell made the most noise in early March, when he had at least one point in five consecutive games and totaled two goals and four assists in those five games. Purcell's numbers fell off toward the end of the season, but he earned some first-line time during the season, and ended it as part of an intriguing third line with Brian Boyle and, at times, Brad Richardson.
The bad: Purcell's first stint with the Kings this season, in December and January, ended in relative disappointment. Purcell alternated between the first and fourth line. In Terry Murray's eyes, Purcell didn't bring enough offense to stay on the first line and didn't bring enough grit to stay on the fourth line. That led to a return trip to Manchester.
Going forward: Asumming the Kings re-sign him (he's a restricted free agent), next season will be an important one for Purcell, a player Dean Lombardi once had penciled in as a potential first-line winger. Purcell's style of play indicates that he needs to be in a top-six role in order to thrive in the NHL, but will his talent level make him a fit in one of those roles? Lombardi's activity level in the trade market this summer will go a long way toward determining where Purcell might be able to fit.
From the Kings...
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty will represent Canada at the 2009 IIHF World Championship tournament, the Kings today announced in conjunction with Hockey Canada. The World Championship tournament is scheduled for April 24 - May 10 in Switzerland.
Doughty, 19, will be making his first appearance at the World Championships. The 6-1, 203-pound native of London, Ontario, last skated with Team Canada at the 2008 World Junior Championships, bringing home a gold medal while also earning Top Defenseman of the tournament honors while recording four assists in seven games. He was just the fifth Canadian defenseman to win the award and the first to win the award before being drafted into the NHL. Doughty also skated with Team Canada at the 2007 World Under-18 Championships and the 2006 World Under-17 Championships.
For the Kings this past season, Doughty played in 81 games and led the Kings in time-on-ice with an average of 23:49 per game. He logged at least 20 minutes of ice time in 76 of his 81 games and his time-on-ice average led all rookies in the NHL. Doughty also tied for first among rookie NHL blue-liners in assists (21) and points (27) while also tying for second in goals (six) and blocked shots (114). In addition, Doughty's six goals tied for the team lead among Kings' defensemen and his 21 assists and 27 points both ranked second among team blue-liners.
For his efforts, Doughty was named Both the Kings' Outstanding Defenseman and Best Newcomer (Mark Bavis Memorial Award) this past Saturday. Doughty, who participated in the YoungStars event as part of the 2009 NHL All-Star Weekend in Montreal last January, was originally selected by the Kings in the first-round (2nd overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
This will be the fifth month of measuring fans' approval ratings of Dean Lombardi and Terry Murray.
Mid-November (team record: 5-6-2): Lombardi, 96 percent; Murray, 89 percent
Mid-December (team record: 12-12-4): Lombardi, 96 percent; Murray, 89 percent.
Mid-January (team record: 17-20-6): Lombardi, 86 percent; Murray, 64 percent.
Mid-February (team record: 24-22-7): Lombardi, 97 percent, Murray 96 percent.
Mid-March (team record: 29-30-10): ???

It was a good weekend for the Manchester Monarchs, and especially Jonathan Bernier. The Monarchs picked up victories on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and Bernier started all four games. He allowed a total of five goals in those four games, and three of those goals came Sunday, at the end of a four-games-in-five-days stretch. Combined, Bernier stopped 100 of 105 shots. He has won six consecutive starts.
Marc-Andre Cliche, Brian Boyle and Alec Martinez each had two goals, and Trevor Lewis and Marty Murray each had four points on the week. Cliche had a ``Gordie Howe Hat Trick'' in one of hte games.
The Monarchs are 7-0-1 in their last eight, and Murry leads the team with 42 points.
In the ECHL, Jeff Zatkoff has been a bit uneven for the Ontario Reign of late, but he stopped 36 shots to beat Stockton 2-1 on Sunday. On Saturday, he stopped 18 of 21 shots to beat Bakersfield but on Friday, he stopped only 18 of 23 shots in a loss to Utah. For the season, Zatkoff is 14-9-1 with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage.
Thomas Hickey has 15 goals, 33 assists and a plus-31 rating in 53 games for Seattle of the Western Hockey League. Colten Teubert has 12 goals and 22 assists and a minus-8 rating in 57 games with Regina, where goalie Linden Rowat has a 2.68 GAA and a .904 save percentage in 57 games.
Martin Jones and the Calgary Hitmen are all but unstoppable in the Western Hockey League. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Hitmen have a 56-8-3-1 record. Jones is 43-4-3-1 with a 2.08 GAA and a .915 save percentage. Jones is coming off a 4-0 victory over Vancouver on Friday, in which he made 28 saves.
The Windsor Spitfires, with Andrei Loktionov, are also doing quite well, with a 56-8-0-1 record in the OHL. Loktionov had a hat trick in Friday's victory over the Plymouth Whalers, and isn't it good to know there's still a team named the Whalers out there? For the season, Loktionov has 23 goals and 41 assists in 49 games.
Manchester puts out extensive notes every week, so I'll cut and paste them after the jump...
This will be the fourth month of measuring fans' approval ratings of Dean Lombardi and Terry Murray.
Mid-November (team record: 5-6-2): Lombardi, 96 percent; Murray, 89 percent
Mid-December (team record: 12-12-4): Lombardi, 96 percent; Murray, 89 percent.
Mid-January (team record: 17-20-6): Lombardi, 86 percent; Murray, 64 percent.
Mid-February (team record: 24-22-7): ?
This will be the third month of measuring fans' approval ratings of Dean Lombardi and Terry Murray. The first two months were remarkably consistent:
Mid-November (team record: 5-6-2): Lombardi, 96 percent; Murray, 89 percent
Mid-December (team record: 12-12-4): Lombardi, 96 percent; Murray, 89 percent.
Mid-January (team record: 17-20-6): ?

LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Kings forwards Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar will represent the Kings on the XM/NHL All-Star Fan Balloting presented by 2K Sports, the NHL announced today.
The 104-player ballot features 23 players under the age of 25, including Brown (who turns 24 today) and Kopitar (21). Brown is the Kings' captain and Kopitar, who is a Kings assistant captain, played in his first NHL All-Star Game last year.
Voting opens on November 12, and in a first for all major professional sports leagues, the NHL will provide real-time All-Star fan balloting results online at NHL.com. From November 12 through January 2, NHL fans will be able to vote as often as they like to select the starting lineups for the 2009 NHL All-Star Game in Montreal. Fans around the world can vote online via interactive English and French ballots at Vote.NHL.com. Those in the U.S. and Canada also will be able to cast their votes via text message using any wireless carrier. During the voting period, real-time results will be available exclusively on Vote.NHL.com/results. This marks the third consecutive year the All-Star Balloting process is entirely digital.
The 2009 NHL All-Star Weekend in Montreal will celebrate the Montreal Canadiens' Centennial season with live national broadcasts of the Honda/NHL SuperSkills event on Saturday, January 24, and the NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, January 25, on VERSUS in the United States and CBC and RDS in Canada. Fox Sports has released the schedule of the 10 Kings games it will broadcast in high definition this season. Of course, they're putting all of the Lakers and Clippers(!) home games in HD, so 10 seems a bit ridiculous, but apparently that will change next season.

Monday, October 27 vs. Detroit Red Wings, 7:30 PM (WEST HD)
Tuesday, November 4 vs. Ducks, 7:30 PM (WEST HD)

In addition to the Kings-Sharks home game on October 12, the Kings/NHL today announced each club's 2008-09 "at large" games against non-conference opponents: The Kings will play a "home-and-home series" as follows: The Kings host Washington on November 20 and visit Washington on February 5; the Kings host New Jersey on January 10 and visit New Jersey on February 7; and the Kings host Philadelphia on January 3 and visit Philadelphia on February 25.
The complete 2008-09 Kings/NHL schedule is to be released tomorrow, Thursday. The club's first on-ice training camp session date is Saturday, September 20, at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo.
What follows is the transcript of Dean Lombardi's conference call with reporters today regarding the firing of Marc Crawford. All...27...minutes...of...it. There's audio of it on the Kings' website, and tomorrow I will figure out how to link it, but at the moment I'm starting to see double. So please pardon any typos below. Tomorrow, we can also start the process of talking about some of the likely candidates. Should be an interesting few weeks...
Conference call scheduled at some point this afternoon...

KINGS ANNOUNCE COACHING CHANGE
Kings 21st coach in team history will not return next season
Jun 10, 2008, 4:15 PM EDT
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi Tuesday announced that Marc Crawford will not return next season as the team's head coach. Crawford has one season remaining on his contract.
In his two seasons as head coach, Crawford posted a 59-84-21 with the Kings.
Kings All-Time Coaching History | Kings Coaches' History Gallery
"We appreciate Marc's commitment the two seasons he has been here," said Lombardi. "However, we believe that in evaluating where we are at and, more importantly, where we are going as an organization, we feel this coaching change was the right decision to make. We wish Marc the best in his future endeavors."
The Kings hired Marc Crawford as the 21st head coach in Kings history on May 22, 2006. Crawford formerly was the Head Coach of the Vancouver Canucks and Colorado Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques.
Crawford began his NHL coaching career with Quebec in 1994 and in his first season he became the youngest coach to win the Jack Adams Trophy. After the Nordiques relocated to Denver he won the Stanley Cup in 1996 and with the win became the third-youngest coach in NHL history to raise Lord Stanley. Colorado went 16-6 that post-season and swept Florida in the Finals.
Crawford coached the Avalanche for two seasons after winning the Cup before leaving following the 1997-98 season. He then spent time providing analysis for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada before being hired as the 15th head coach of the Canucks in January of 1999, the club he played every game of his nine-year professional career with.
Crawford compiled a 246-213-70 record in 529 regular season games over seven seasons in Vancouver and the Canucks made the playoffs four of the last five seasons he was there. In 2003-04, the Canucks won the Northwest Division title (the franchise's first division title since 1992-93) and in 2003 the Canucks advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals.
Overall, in 12 seasons and 905 games behind the bench as an NHL head coach, Crawford, has compiled a regular season record of 438-342-125 and a playoff mark of 43-40. He is also the first head coach in Kings history to have a Stanley Cup on his resume.
Here's the interview Don did this week with Danny Taylor, the much-traveled goalie who logged some big miles between Los Angeles and Reading near the end of last season. Don gets the scoop on what that was like for Taylor and also gets to know Taylor a little bit, going into what should be a crucial summer for him.
Hope everyone enjoys another of Don's great interviews. I'm working on getting the Patrick O'Sullivan interview up today...shouldn't be long. Enjoy...
In his most challenging effort to date, Don Fulton finally tracked down Kings prospect Wayne Simmonds, and got a great interview for his effort. As I just finished telling Don, Simmonds is one of the players I'm most looking forward to seeing again, just to see how he has developed since last fall. Here's the interview...
