Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Alex Kozinski was rebuked by his colleagues over on the Third Circuit, and apologized. Case closed.
Previously: An in-depth look at RPV resident/federal judge's humor
The Los Angeles Times' look at 9th Circuit Judge Alex Kozinski's e-mail group, called Easy Rider Gag List, includes some of the jokes and such that the well-respected leagle eagle sent to friends, colleagues and others.
This was one of my favorite lines from the article:
"Other jokes, labeled "P&T" in the subject heading to indicate they were "puerile and tasteless," were cruder and more sexually explicit and used language that defies quotation in a general circulation newspaper. "
Imagine being the prosecutor or defense attorney on a normally run-of-the-mill one-count armed robbery trial, but presenting your case before one of the country's highest-ranking judges. Alex Kozinski, chief judge of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is one of the jurors deciding whether defendant Raymond Sequeria, 33, is guilty or not in a Torrance Superior Court trial.
During closing arguments today before Judge Steven Van Sicklen, Kozinski - the only panelist wearing a jacket and tie - seemed relaxed and attentive as Deputy District Attorney Ken Fuller argued the case.
Kozinski, who lives in Rancho Palos Verdes, made headlines a couple months ago when his personal Web site containing sexual images was outed by a foe while the judge was presiding over a high-profile obscenity trial. Links to the Web site are no longer accessible, but click here for a story about it.
With my morning cup o' Joe, I was doing my routine scan of the Daily Breeze and was struck by the oh-so-high number of sex-related crimes we had to report on this morning. I do this for a living, and even I'm a bit flabergasted!
First, there's the principal held in a porn bust, then there's the suspect held for two Torrance sex assaults, a different Torrance man facing child porn charges for sexually explicit images of babies and a teacher found having sex with a student in a Carson parking lot.
You add all that with other stories in the last few days, like the judge from RPV who had sexual photos on his Web site, the San Pedro physician charged with sexual battery and the flower store manager who paid boys to take pictures of themselves ... and don't you just feel like you need to take a long shower?
Despite RPV resident Judge Kozinski's attempt to keep the sexually explicit images from his now-famous and controversial Web site under wraps, these things have a way of getting out. Patterico, a locally popular blog maintained by an anonymous Los Angeles prosecutor, has an interview with the tipster who let this cat out of its bag, as well as links to some of the photos.
My warning to you: Some of you may find the photos offensive - so don't click on them! Some of you may be at work - you might not want to click on them, either!
The fallout from Alex Kozinski's Web site continues, and the closely-watched obscenity trial he was presiding over is now on hold while prosecutors figure out if there is some kind of conflict to having the chief judge of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals presiding over the proceedings.
The obscenty trial itself was interesting, but this just added a whole new level of prurient interest.
