Reasoning sometimes hard to understand

Curious why some folks are having such a hard time with La Serna's football schedule.

And why they should be 3-0.

Sometimes, it is more important for a team to just get wins than it is to play some super stud progam and get beat soundly but supposedly gain the experience of facing high quality competition.

Winning, no matter who against, can be contageous.

Getitng your clock cleaned week after week can be demoralizing, and certainly it's no fun, no matter how much experience is gained. Eventually, those teams can reach a point where they begin playing as though waiting to lose, expecting something bad is going to happen.

Does anyone out there think that St. Paul is going to benefit all that much from playing Bishop Amat, St. Bonaventure, Loyola and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame?

What kind of a confidence factor will be gained?

As for La Serna, perhaps it would be best to wait and see how the Lancers do in League before passing judgement.

And don't ever discount the value of winning, no matter the opponent.

El Rancho,
That's joke scheduling Orange Lutheran and St.Paul, at least the good teams that we play in our pre-season we can hang with, your games are a joke. If you read my blogs that's why I say that this team is different then last years team, I really do wish that your horrible team can turn it around and make the 3rd place seed so we could play you in the first round. And it would be a blow out, you lost to Montebello, how can you say it won't be blow. Get real!!! Your wasting my time. Your probably gonna lose to Pioneer tomorrow anyway, losers.

El Rancho said:

Seems odd that you will use that whole Grigsby thing in the case between ER and St Paul, but you neglect to use it when it comes to Schurr playing Cal Hi. 35-7 is the projected score between Schurr and ER on calpreps, now this year there is no denying that ER would most likely lose to Schurr, and theres no denying that we are having a horrible season but it would not be as lopsided as you think. As for Reyna not wanting to play Schurr anymore, thats not what I heard, but it dont matter to me really, I wonder why he would take Schurr off the schedule and add Orange Lutheran for 2 years and now St Paul. Good luck this year, I hope you dont face another 3rd place Arroyo team because you might just get blown out again.

Schurr Fan said:

El Rancho,
We would of beat Montebello with our JV team, or with all of our starters out, that's how pathetic your 0-7 El Rancho team is, we practically did in the fourth quarter when we ran all over the starters they left in, and if St. Paul had Grisby they would of beat you by 5 or 6 touchdowns easy. I don't know what your thinking about Jessie Ramirez's team, yeah they were a good team, but they were one dimensional (with only him running) we have one of the most balanced teams in the area (check our stats), with passing and runnning, do me a favor look up calpreps.com and do a projection matchup between Schurr 2006 and El Rancho 2006, since thats the only way we'll be able to see what would happen if we played your sorry school, since you won't make the playoffs, I wish we could play you first round. It would be a joke, and if you knew anything about El Rancho it was your coach Reyna that didn't want to play us anymore.

El Rancho said:

Look, we had about 6 starters out for that game against Montebello, but I dont use that as an excuse, that was the worst game we have played the whole year, no one else would beat ER by that much this season. St Paul beat us by 2 td's, do you honestly think you are anywhere near what st paul is. ER played Schurr for years up until the 2003 season, but for some reason Schurr didnt want to play us anymore. The best team Schurr has had in a long time was the 2004 team with Jessie Ramirez, this years team isnt even close to that. It sounds like you play for Schurr, tell us what number you are so we can see how good you really are when you lose to a Del Rio league school in CIF.

Schurr Fan said:

El Rancho,
Don't even talk you got spanked by Montebello, what do you think we would do to you this year. And I'm not talking about last year or any other years, I'm talking about this year. All the teams in the Del Rio League are overrated, trying to play cheap teams in the preseason to have a good record. All I got to say is wait to the playoffs, and I hope we draw someone for the Del Rio League first round. Then you'll shut up. Till then keep losing at the Ranch.

Anonymous 2 said:

Schurr Fan,

If you really believe that by stating what team you root for really makes you a man, I truly feel sorry for your girlfriend.

If you have read my blogs you would have noticed that I really don't have favorites. I am a football fan. I will tell you this, the only team I am not rooting for is the Cal Hi Grigsbys.

I'll give it up to Schurr for what they have done this season, but I will have to wait until these last three days to hold judgment because, seriously, Keppel?

Please don't ever compare Keppel to any school out there. Even Mountain View HS, who once had a stretch of 5 years of 1-9 seasons, looked forward to playing Keppel, that was their only win.

El Rancho said:

Schurr Fan, shut up already, Schurr has beaten ER only 1 time. Schurr would get spanked by SF, and would get spanked by Cal with Grigsby, and would have a tough time against La Serna and Whittier. Keep dreaming, you would never blow out ER the same way you did to Montebello. Are you going to blowout BG and Alhambra the same way you said you were going to do to Leuzinger? I cant wait to see that.

Schurr Fan said:

To the "Fan", the only reason Pioneer tied Alhambra was because their starting running back was hurt, and their starting QB tore his ACL, if it wasn't for that the game would of been a blow out just like last year.
And to the "Anonymous 2", why don't you be a man and say what school you go for, and don't even talk about Keppel every league has a Keppel, actually the Del Rio League has three - El Rancho, Whittier, and Pioneer, I hope we play one of them in the first round, then you'll see. I actually hope we play Cal Hi, again. I thought they would be way better with Grisby but after seeing them barely beat Santa Fe (when they didn't even deserve it) and just getting by overated La Serna, I would way rather play someone from the Del Rio League in the playoffs over La Habra or Troy. Look how Montebello killed El Rancho and look what we did to Montebello (56-7) that was a joke(imagine if we played El Rancho), and look at how Santa Fe barely beat Bell Gardens, just watch what we do to Bell Gardens, and see how Pioneer tied Alhambra, watch what we do to Alhambra, and they will have all there players back. So before you start talking crap, say what team you go for, and watch the last three games of league.

Although you do bring up good points, your blogs are way too long. For instance, take the last one, couldn't you have just called me out in a couple of sentences instead of berating me?

Term of the day: berate - to scold or condemn vehemently AND AT LENGTH.

La Serna - Keep up the great work.
Pioneer - tough loss.
Cal Coaches - May your souls be condemned.

WEAK SCHEDULE FOR LA SERNA...just facts thats all...and i somehow remember directing the last few comments at CHIEFTAN...so why do you interfere?
once again, props to the al bundy joke...i laughed, everybody else probably did...but whoever you are...get over yourself. i dont think youre tough for talking bad about people through a computer.

Schurr Fan,

Adding to The Fan's comments, Pioneer only tied with Alhambra because of a ghost holding call against Pioneer's fullback when Pioneer scored at the end, which called back the TD. Not because of an Alhambra "big defensive stance" as Alhambra's coach stated on the Pasadena Star News.

Schurr Fan, who does Schurr play this week, badminton powerhouse Keppel? What a league.

LS ALUMNI #49 said:

CHIEFTAIN ALUMNI...
i defenitely understand what you're saying about the losses...100% agree...no weaknesses can be exploited if youre blowing teams out all the time...and that goes hand in hand with the original subject (Weak Schedule) so in turn, i agree with you in hoping that this year isnt a repeat...i respect your knowledge of the matter for sure

now as for talking about dishardening events in a season, understand that its a game coaching staffs play with eachother. they sell their souls before ANY players do...

EXAMPLE- Santa Fe coaching staff sends a box of donuts to a La Serna saturday film session while the coaches exchange game film...The night before, la serna loses 7-0 to cal hi...the donuts? choclate donuts with yellow sprinkles. a full dozen of them...all in the shape of zeros. the signifigance? a mockery of OUR team as a result of the previous night's outcome.
EXAMPLE-the next week when la serna plays santa fe...santa fe blows us out...while running up the score during the game, santa fe players are told to kneel down on their own sidelines to add insult to injury...
EXAMPLE-back up to the beginning of the year...dontrell mitchell calls us out in the la times...
EXAMPLE-the whole nick grigsby deal with cal this year. you gotta be certain he's gonna be an impact player in these last 5 weeks...

So like i said, its a coaches game, since they can't play the actual game themselves. now on a personal note...don't try to talk to anybody about whats right and wrong to do on or off the football field...santa fe is the mother of all evils in this category. before you take ANYTHING personal, understand that as players, we are a result of what the coaching staff calls, and gets themselves into. take a step back and realize that the ranch coaches were probably hamming it up w SG cuz revenge is sweet...plain and simple. they were probably getting back at you guys for something you guys did earlier in the season, and by you guys, i mean the representatives of your school...YOUR COACHES. its kinda funny to hear that a school who ALWAYS dishes it out, cant even take it when it comes back on a smaller scale. but like i said, its not our fault...its the game outside of the game... the coaches game...

El Rancho said:

Do you know for a fact that the ER coaching staff helped out SG in that game, because that is what you are implying. I know for a fact that most of the ER coaching staff from that year were friends with Donald Bernard and Jude Oliva the O and D coordinators from SG. To imply that ER helped out SG in that game is going a bit far. The ER coaching staff sure didnt help out WC in 04 and Orange in 05, I honestly doubt they had anything to do with SG beating you guys.

Chieftain Alumni said:

LS Alumni #49:

I respect your opinion that La Serna’s win streak helped them in the playoffs because they did beat a good Westminster team. But it’s still my belief that the LS coaching staff probably learned more from the 3 loses then the victories. In being put up against better competition weaknesses were exposed and exploited in that team. All I am saying is that should those weaknesses have been exposed in preseason maybe league would have been a different story. For those kids sake I just hope this year isn’t a repeat.

And as for the San Gabriel game, this is my final comment on that subject. As if the lose wasn’t bad enough it was very disheartening while heading to the parking lot to look over and see a group of El Rancho’s coaching staff hamming it up with the SG coaches. It’s sad to think the lengths that some people will go to make sure SFHS doesn’t win a ring. And this isn’t a rumor because I saw it with my own two eyes!!!

Good luck to one and all as league play opens this week!!!

Condor60 said:

Yes i posted the comment about La Serna, not about Schurr so stop talking crap. The Whittier Daily news asked for comments on the game so our coach told them we had 56 missed tackles. That's not crying about it. And we did admit we lost. So i don't know what you are talking about. And stop talking crap about our players. Schurr doesn't really have great players either. We just made you look good by how bad we played. You guys didn't beat us. We beat ourselves by all the mistakes we made. And you don't even know Grigsby or anything about him so stop talking crap about him using a Motel 6 to use the address. You don't know that. You are just using that to make yourself sound smart and like you know what you're talking about. So just stop. It's seriously pathetic.

LS ALUMNI #49 said:

CHIEFTAIN ALUMNI...
i gotta give it to you man...you know your stuff. your right...the meltdown was not that...we sucked...you guys beat us...badly...plain and simple...cal beat us 7-0 and a 3-4 el rancho team beat us in the rain at our house to end the streak...when i mentioned we were a team of integrity, i meant WE would never kneel down on the sidelines if we were blowing a team out like you guys did to us. i remember dontrell called it like week 3 or 4 that you guys would "blow us out" to the la times...and you did...but the reason i brought it up (meltdown) was because the initial topic was about the weak schedule...we played a weak schedule only to flop in league, and i admit that...but the season after the season(playoffs) started and we beat a tough team...what prepared us for westminister? the weak preseason schedule or the 3 losses at the end of the season?...doesnt add up...thats why a strong or weak preseason doesnt better prepare you, because ANYTHING can happen...and the san gabriel game i attended, and it was not nearly as close as the score indicated...from a spectators perspective...not at all. thats why i said steamrolled. you both played an ugly game, but in all honesty, yours was uglier. the next year again...had a bad start, and still ended up playing a great team in the playoffs...we were riding momentum, yes, but still the same thing...anything can happen. wasnt that the year you guys were like 9-1(im honestly not sure)...yet a same round exit? a weak schedule compared to a strong one and a league championship, yet both are knocked out the same round?...once again, doesnt add up...last year, the same...as for the pride thing...i'm simply giving credit, where credit is due...the length of the paragraphs have nothing to do with me calling anybody else out or speaking as if I can do something about the outcome of the games THIS YEAR...so chill man...im not knocking anybody, im just saying the LS squad is STILL unbeaten, and they deserve to be praised for that...i would do the same for the Santa Fe team...you'll probably win another league championship, but if you dont win a ring...dont mean a thing right? just saying man that after this season is over and the dust settles, its a whole other season...if you guys finally get your ring, ill bite my tongue and say "you were right." if it ends up the same way it has the past 3 seasons...ill simply say "i told you so" and not mention it again...

Before anyone starts to belittle me for my mistake, I am aware that the correct form of spelling Schurr is with a c right after the S. SCHURR, I was mocking you.

Schurr Fan said:

Schurr Dad,
I'm totally a Schurr Fan and I'm not taking both sides, all I said was that I agreed that we overlooked Arroyo last year and got it handed to us and that was in my post on October 2, if you don't agree then you probably weren't watching the same game that everyone else did. The post on October 1, 2006 at 7:57 wasn't by me, if you look further down it was done by someone from El Rancho, saying that their post said it was me and not them, and there was some sort of confusion. I would never say anything bad about Schurr High School. I think we have a great shot this year, and I only speak the truth. Read all my other posts. So don't say I'm putting a bulls eye on anyone. I know that Schurr will prove to everyone that they are for real this year.

And to Condor 60, it said you posted. And if you didn't then don't talk, you lost and don't have your coaches give excuses on why they lost (like saying we missed a CIF record 56 tackles - boo hoo) we missed 39 tackles and we still won, what if we didn't miss 39 tackles, football isn't perfect, just be men, admitt you lost and can't tackle. And the game wasn't even as close as the score showed, besides that early 4th quarter touchdown you guys never even made it past the 50 yard line, but your team and coaches can try to make it seem you had a chance and cry to the Whittier Daily, but you and I both know you had no shot, especially when your QB can't even throw the ball over 30 yards. Your lucky you have a kicker, and that we didn't pass the second half. Or the score would of been 48-13, your corners suck, especially when our QB was 11-12 for 170 yards. Yeah you guys had a shot (in your dreams). But how horrible is it that you guys have to recruit St.Pauls RB, because the entire coaching staff is from St.Paul, I think this is joke that a kid is using a Motel 6 as his home address, and CIF and the league is allowing this - where is the integrity. How can all these people wish this kid the best, the best thing he could of done was stay at St.Paul and get looks playing against great schools, instead of going to crappy Cal Hi, who is still gonna lose first game to Santa Fe.

Just jumping on what the Chieftain Alumni posted...the Santa Fe vs. San Gabriel game was a joke! That was the best chance for Santa Fe to get the "monkey off their back." I am also a chieftain alumnist and played there and know all about SFHS (Semi-Final High School), for the San Gabriel game to even had been that close not just be a loss was embarrassing! Please dont put other programs down when in fact that year Santa Fe only played one more game than La Serna! And the following year both Santa Fe and La Serna were knocked out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals!

Pioneer and La Serna do not need your love. Attend one of their games and you will see that they have both the talent and the coaching to make it to the playoffs.

SHURR, in the end I completely agree with SHURR DAD and his quote surely can apply to you, "BUT LIKE ALWAYS WITH HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ALOT DEPENDS ON INJURIES AND GRADES!!!!!!! WHY PUT A BULLSEYE ON [a] TEAM IF [YOU'RE] REALLY A FAN JUST LET THEM PLAY AND SHOW NO NEED TO TALK."

LS ALUM #49:

Are you serious about bringing up the La Serna team that was one of the highest scoring teams for 8 weeks not getting proper recognition?????? Please they put up 78 vs. Murphy and 55 vs. Workman. If my memory serves me right didn’t Murphy have like 20 players on varsity at that game? Seriously, 133 points against Murphy & Workman. Gee, I wonder why they didn’t get any recognition. And to refer as the end of the season as a “melt down is putting it bit mildly don’t you think? 0-3 in your finally three league games putting up a whopping 23 point combined and getting CRUSHED by Santa Fe 43-3. Also was shutting out San Gabriel in the second half really that satisfying? Dude, they beat you 34-14!!! And then you refer to SF as being steam rolled by San Gabriel the following week when the final score ended up being 17-14. The game wasn’t decided until the last couple of minutes of the game because Santa Fe had a chance to win or at least tie late in the game. STEAM ROLLED……I think not!

That is as deep as I am going to go into your long winded posting. I guess I’ll just hang with my fellow “gung ho alumni and we’ll see you on Oct. 26th.

Bottom line…..beat or at least hang with some legitimate teams in preseason and earn some respect! That’s all we ask.

So i don't know why you called me out. maybe you are reading the forums wrong or something. but while we are on the subject, all the stuff you said is true about your players. That's what makes our loss so frustrating. You had these returning players and yet we still had a chance towards the end of the game to beat you. But like i said, i don' tknow why you called me out. I was talking about La Serna, not Schurr. So i would appreciate it if u would not call me out on the wrong blog entry.

Did you have fun watching the 49ers getting their butts kicked this Sunday? By the way… who the heck is Aaron Synder anyway???? Not only is the last name spelt wrong but there is no such player. Did you mean Adam Snyder???? Please get your La Serna alumni straight before spouting off. Maybe you should have watched The Washington Redskins coached by NFL Hall of Fame member and Santa Fe alumni Joe Gibbs. You know the Joe Gibbs that has Super Bowl rings for winning Super Bowls XVII, XXII and XXVI.

Listen Condor60, first off I don't like talking about last year, because all the teams last year were different. Pioneer was horrible, Whittier was horrible, and El Rancho was better, Santa Fe was much better and Cal and La Serna were just okay. But this year if you knew anything about our team, were returning the MVP of our league (#32), the defensive player of the year (#35) and line man of the year (#65), and they were all juniors not to mention many first teamers that I didn't mention, and many great sophmores that are now juniors and everyone from the del rio league knows them #22 and #11, if you also pay any attention to the stats our QB is #2 in the area, 2 of our running backs are in the top five, and our starting receiver is #1, and thats against real teams. Not Bassett, El Monte, Glenn, Gabriellino, or Norwalk, if that was the case our stats would be ridiculous and of course we'd be 4-0 like La Serna. It was against Burroughs of Burbank, Downey (who by the way beat La Habra),and Wilson Hacienda Heights. Why do you think we start off slow every year, we play good teams, Cal Hi is the weakest team on our schedule. If we scheduled teams like I mentioned above, that wouldn't get us ready for the playoffs. I'll admitt last year we overlooked Arroyo, but this years team is different. Oh yeah and you say our league is weak, don't get me wrong I'm very familar with the strength of the Del Rio League, but this year Bell Gardens whipped El Rancho and on Friday Alhambra will do the same to Pioneer, and We beat Cal Hi, and I know that we can beat La Serna, and who does that leave out of the Del Rio League, big surprise SANTA FE. That's why I don't think anyone but Santa Fe can compete with us. So until you do a little more research, don't blog and just watch everyone but Santa Fe go down in the rankings. And by the way we play Leuzinger this week, not El Monte, Buena Park, or Whittier Christian.

Hey LS ALUM #49,

Remember that pride is often a downfall. Why would you go out and refer to everyone as “gung ho alumni when your blog has probably been the longest posted so far? Does La Serna recruit, I don’t think so. Is Cal trying to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes with this St Paul running back transfer, I do think so. The problem that most of us seem to have with La Serna is the news papers love affair with them. The facts are that they play a weak preseason schedule and the numbers can back that up that statement but yet they get a #2 ranking and always seem to get some sort of ink in the papers. Please explain how that happens? Who La Serna plays in the playoffs is luck of the draw based on your record but judging by their preseason schedule they would probably duck some of those teams if they could as well. What has Santa Fe’s preseason schedule done for them……I think their league unbeaten streak and league titles speak for themselves!!!

On a personal level La Serna has always been one of those teams that as a Santa Fe player your supposed to hate but did I ever lose any respect (if I had any) for them last year when they played Santa Fe. They finally get the ball in field position where they might be able to score. Not once do they man up and take a shot at the endzone but instead run the ball three times to set up for a field goal so as not to be Santa Fe’s 5th consecutive shut out. Final score 36-3. As a fan of football and explayer I was embarrassed for the members of that team.

"as for pioneer they aint going anywhere in league, they'll be battling for the scraps of the bottom of the barrel with el rancho." - What a low blow Del Rio Alum. Where do you get off making such an asinine assessment of Pioneer football? Have you gone to any of their games? Have you read any of Murray's articles on Pioneer? Are you basing your outlook of Pioneer football on their 0-10 season last year or 3-7 the season before?

Del Rio Alum, have you not heard the news? Pioneer has turned the corner. They have played significantly well their first four games, their only blemish so far was last week's game versus a really good Cypruss team. Yet they still had a chance to tie the game.

This week they will go up against Alhambra, followed by Whittier, league opener. Del Rio Alum, it would serve you better to wait until after the Whittier game to place judgment on the team.

One last thing, Del Rio Alum, will it kill you to proof read your blogs before you post them? As a WUHSD graduate, you serve no justice to the English departments in the district.

SCHURR FAN WHY ARE YOU TAKING BOTH SIDES, 1ST TALKING ABOUT HOW GOOD THEY ARE THEN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED IN THE PLAYOFFS TO ARROYO LAST YEAR. DID YOU FORGET TO CHANGE TO YOUR OTHER SCREEN NAME?? I BELIEVE THEY DO HAVE A SHOT TO GO QUITE FAR THIS YEAR. THE SAME AS SANTA FE, LA HABRA,TROY AND A FEW OTHER TEAMS BUT LIKE ALWAYS WITH HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL ALOT DEPENDS ON INJURIES AND GRADES!!!!!!! WHY PUT A BULLSEYE ON THE TEAM IF YOUR REALLY A FAN JUST LET THEM PLAY AND SHOW NO NEED TO TALK.

"DEL RIO ALUM"
THE WAY THIS GUY POST I WOULD BET HE'S NOT EVEN ON THE SCHURR SIDE AS A FAN. BUT IF YOU DID SEE THE GAME AGAINST CAL. YOU WOULD HAVE TO SAY IT WASNT AS CLOSE AS THE SCORE.

scj said:

Personally, I think the Whittier Daily News does a pretty good job of providing balanced coverage of prep sports teams. It may seem like some teams get more coverage than others but that goes for any newspaper.

Got to remember it is all about the scoreboard. Fans like to read about the winning teams not teams that are 0-4, 1-3, etc.

All you guys can go on and on for days about who is better (that is what makes this blog fun to read) but it all comes down to W's and L's. Doesn't matter who you play.

Schurr Fan said:

I know some of you may say, "shut up, El Rancho is 0-4," but im saying this as a unbiased HS football fan. For you to say that the only team from the Del Rio league would give you a challenge would be Santa Fe is dumb if you ask me, Its not like you took down Cal High 42-0. You would have trouble with La Serna, Whittier and even Pioneer. Last year you guys had a similar type of season, you lost the first few games, then you went on to win league, what happened in the playoffs? 44-6 loss to the 3rd place Arroyo from the weak MVL league.

as for pioneer they aint going anywhere in league, they'll be battling for the scraps of the bottom of the barrel with el rancho. I've been to some whittier games, their running backs should cause some concern for the del rio defences. all combined they rushed over 700 yds in there first four games. One of their backs being a sophomore. the cardinals stepped it up defensively this week against katella but still they need to improve if they want to take out santa fe. They really do have a shot to take them out this year. Go to there game this week on friday against whittier cristian at whittier college. This should be a blow out.

my prediction:whittier(hands down)

I was part of a team that for 8 weeks was the highest scoring team in the STATE...wanna know our CIF ranking? 7...thats the closest we got to the top...how about locally? #2 behind santa fe...SO GET OVER YOUR SPECULATIONS OF A LOVE AFFAIR BETWEEN THE PAPER AND OUR SCHOOL...URCHIT...ITS MIND BOGGLING HOW DUMB THAT IS...a meltdown late in the season resulted in us being a wildcard team in the playoffs...who did we draw? #2 ranked westminister...result...40-38 WIN. next was san gabriel who threw 95% of their plays. they beat us, but we shut them out in the 2nd half...san gabriel goes on to steam roll santa fe the next week and right on into the finals. Fast forward to next season...open against a san dimas team with revenge on their minds (lost to us 30-28 at home as time expired the year before YEAH PETO)...referees stopped the game with 7 seconds left as we lined up for the winning field goal...a 42 yarder...steve murillo, our kicker? are you kidding me? in his sleep, all day...so we lose on a blown call 17-19..next week, handle a week norwalk team...next week, play probably the fastest team in the southern section, artesia, who was also under norm flowers, and was one of the most improved teams in the division...we lose, and we lose soundly...no excuses...the next week we're shut out...that should never happen...the following week, play century...weak team you say? have you ever heard of SIMON SON? well, thats century's running back...1700 yards as a junior, 2500 as a senior...we won and held him to 2 scores.when was the last time santa fe played a 4000 yard back? how about a quailty back? i remember...west covina's walter thurmond...result? 1st round exit from the playoffs, the same year im talking about. (wow that tough pre season schedule really payed off in the end!)how about la serna, well we pull bell gardens 1st round TRANSLATION- we pull alfredo castaneda the 1st round...yes the same bell gardens running back who scored 40 times and ran for 2300+ yards that season...result? he doesnt even finish the game because of injury(yeah pnizzle and robert) but how come you never hear about alfredo? cuzz schurr's glory hog jesse ramirez was too busy taking 350 carries and running for 300 yards more than alfredo...wait i forgot something...alfredo only had 196 touches...so the schedule that didnt prepare them for the playoffs, DID allow them to beat a smash mouth team that featured a 1 man show...WOW! that creampuff pre season schedule really worked against them, huh?...next was arroyo, who allowed 60 points all season, and was ranked #1. we put up 13, but it wasnt enough, and thats the end of our season.

now lets talk about transitions...2003(2004) la serna team is full of superstars...2 juniors are starters..TRANSLATION-the next year 2004(2005) only 2 players have gametime experience, both are Linebackers whos the new Quarterback?...eventual league MVP Mike Roy. new running back- 1000+ yards Dorian Ventura. along with a ton of scrappy players form A REAL TEAM. there was no show, there was no stat builders, it was pure football. 170 pound linemen...a fullback so fat he could barely get in a stance...a defensive end that weighed 145 pounds...So to say la serna recruits? ridiculous...dont you think we'd have linemen like santa fe checking into the trenches at 6'7'' and weighing 300 pounds? la serna's football players are track, baseball and tennis guys that WANT to play...not 16, 17, and 18 year old boys where football is their JOB... i'll tell you something...la serna has never been a big team, but after playing us, you'd feel what it was like to run into a REAL football team...even if you beat us, we'd hit you in the mouth every play, and EVERY team would feel it...now last year superstar receiver matt petropulos takes over at quarterback with almost no gametime experience, and guides his TEAM to a win over a rosemead team that was insane...they lose to an orange team that goes onto the finals...that takes us to this year...whos at quarterback? ben burke the baseball player? mike ibarra the corner? whos at tail back? 5'6'' jon potts? reciever? gilbert rodriguez the cross country superstar? thats what im saying...is a team...la serna doesnt have the luxary of getting people from the city of long beach, compton, downey, norwalk and santa fe springs...la serna is about integrity...not building a powerhouse division SEVEN football team...La Serna is 4-0 now and WELL DESERVING of a #2 ranking...considering they've done it with all new kids and no big names...thats the best ranking they've had in a really long time, so congratulations. youve EARNED IT. nobody expected you guys to last 10 minutes this season...yet, youre still the ONLY unbeaten team around. and like its been said before, JUST WAIT TILL THE POST SEASON...NOW TO ALL THE GUNG HO ALUMNI---PRIDE IS OFTEN A DOWNFALL...so settle down and just let the boys do the talking...

thanks for your time

Del Rio Alum, the only team in the Del Rio League right now that would actually give us a fight, would be Santa Fe, I hope we play someone from the Del Rio League in the first round like Pioneer, La Serna, or Cal Hi - we won't play Santa Fe because they will be number 1, and then we'll see. Until then just watch all those team (except Santa Fe) fall from the CIF rankings.

La serna high school preseason need to become tougher in the years to come. For example if you look at Jimmy Nolan (ex cantwell head coach)...he would schedule his 24 man cantwell team against tough division one schools and when it came to leauge they dominated. Right before he left this is what oppenets he was going to have his cantwell team face. Jimmy Nolan was a great coach, and changed cantwells program This is a preseason schedule!!

preseason cantwell 2005(before changed, and his departure)
long beach poly
shurr
st john bosco
fountain valley

now thats a preseaon schedule. Jimmy knew his team would lose, but it was playing against d-1 team and potential d-1 college players would help his team dominate there leauge...maybe la serna should do the same....

Schurr fan, not only was your game prediction slightly off, but the fact that you're repeating league champs doesn't mean jack considering you have a weak league. Santa Fe, repeating champs is something respectable because not only do they play a tough schedule year round, but they also play in a half way decent league. I can almost garuntee that if schurr was in the Del Rio league they would not be anywhere near as successful.

La Serna recruiting? please...

Anonymous said:

Does La Serna recruit? Have you gone to one of their games? Next to El Rancho they are the smallest in stature. What exactly do they have to imply that they recruit? There are some schools within the Del Rio League that OPENLY recruit but I dont think La Serna is one of them.

ok ok i get the point that all of you guys are trying to say...the schedules dont really make that much sense honnestly Cal has a wierd schedule im willing to bet 3-2 in pre-season and in the actuall season they are gonna step it up..Santa Fe is gonna be good like always! pioneer is stepping up. La serna is over rated right now. El rancho isnt even in the picture. Whittier is in thier own, you cant criticize the coaches for the schedule at all! they must have a reason and the reason is "strategy" i play for cal and the schedule is wierd we play a good team then a bad one then a bad one then a good one its so we pick it up on the next game we lost to rowland then we picked it up against el monte then beat basset which are horrible teams and we lost to schurr which taught me a leason dont get to big headed it could be your downfall which falls in the La Serna Catagory they are on the glory train La Serna isnt very good Speaking that John Glen "which is one of the worst teams on the western hemisphere" put up a fight! it was horrible! just really bad teams wont get them ready for the competition in Del Rio leauge . a couple of hard teams is good though you have to mix it up a lil bit to get a taste of whats to come and they arent doing that "mixing it up".

After reading some of my own posts, I could see that someone might think that I did not like LS. This is not true! I know a few kids on the team and they are fine young men that I wish nothing but the best.
My problem is with the over abundance of coverage and bias of our local media.

I agree that La Serna plays a weak preseason schedule but when you look at there roster(max preps) they have alot of juniors and even some sophmores who play. Is that why he schedules who he schedules? Last year, La Serna lost to Orange High School in the 2nd round of the playoffs after beating Rosemead who I believed was ranked in the top 5 and undefeated. Orange went on to destroy Sant Fe in the next game. When was the last time Santa Fe won the CIF championship? This weekend, I will be watching the NFL on Sunday and I might catch some of the 49er's game and La Serna alum, Aaron Synder. Would someone please list the other NFL players I can keep an eye on from Schurr, Santa Fe, La Habra and the other local schools?

Emerson said:

Good point, Roger. Winning is contagious, and in football especially, if the pre-season schedule is loaded with bigger, better teams, possible injury becomes a factor as well. Playing better teams in the pre-season can have advantages. For example, La Serna will play in a very tough winter baseball league against several OC division I programs. While it is possible they may get whacked often, the experiences they'll gain will make the Del Rio league seem much less formidable.

Why do we have a problem with La Serna’s preseason schedule??? Let see, last year’s opponents and their season ending records Century 1-9, El Monte 3-7, Gahr 6-4, Norwalk 3-7 and Glenn 0-10. Their only loss was to Gahr who was the only team over .500 they played. So this year they replace Gahr and Century with Montclair 5-5 and Warren 2-8. I don’t think it so much the schedule as much as it is the “better then thou attitude that comes from that school. Anyone that has played a league game against them understands what I’m talking about. And it’s not just in football! Step up to the plate Coach La Vigne and put a team on your preseason schedule that is going to really test what kind of team you have. There is always this talk that its La Serna’s year based on their preseason record only to end up 3-2 in league and squeaking into the playoffs. I agree that it makes no sense to get your head knocked off each year but how are you ever going to know unless your willing to stick it out there, right? If you agree that their preseason schedule is sub par than you have to agree that their #2 ranking this week is a stretch. Besides what is the love affair the papers have with them anyways? WDN’s first male athlete of the week this year was a La Serna junior nose guard??? No denying the kid had a good game but in his first two games Santa Fe’s Angel Molina’s passing was near perfect and you even write a small article on your website stating that fact. Once again La Serna some how, some way gets some love. Go figure!

roger, bishop amat is the biggest rival st. paul has and they should be playing every year and should be in the same leahue. What good does it do for st.paul playing weak teams just to get wins. with the winning tradition of the program st.paul should continue to play their rivals and that includes loyola. just getting cheap wins is not what they are looking for, im sure st. paul has bigger goals like winning league and doing qwell in CIF. as for la serna everyone knows that there goal is to have a winning record since winning the league and beating santa fe is not going to happen. your program improves by playing goo d competition and i applaude santa fe for the goals they have =like competing for a cif title.

MD4evr said:

So Roger, why do you point out St Paul? You actually think St Paul had their clocks cleaned the past games?
If you're implying that it will happen this season, then you seem to passing Judgement.
First of all, Loyola and Norte Dame, I believe were scheduled by CIF, due to the re-alignment and ND has been in their league for the past few years.

Historically St Paul, has been playing these same teams for years, why should they back down now? It would be inexcusable to find a reason not to play them.

Nobody was passing
jugdement on La Serna. I seen it as passing judgement on you, because of your bias, ranking teams based on creampuff schedules.
St Paul plays in a fairly tough league, It wouldn't benefit them to schedule teams that wouldn't provide a challenge, how would they measure their true level of play or improve. This should apply to all teams who want to compete.
St Paul is a young team only 12 or 14 seniors on the team? This will definitely benefit them in this aspect.
I agree winning is valuable. So is the lesson of adversity, it goes along with accepting challenages and not backing down! These are life lessons as well.
You said it yourself, it's best to wait and see if it pays off.
Like someone said in another post, "Don't be a hater"!

Highlander Fan said:

Roger,
I can not disagree with you more. Not playing at least a few quality schools, will not give you a real barometer of your teams weakness's and strengths.
When you play quality programs, you go against quality coachs who will give you insight's into areas that need work. As for your winning is contagious, I agree that you shouldn't play a Notre Dame schedule, but you should challenge your team in the pre season. Your theory of scheduling patsy's does not work, if it did LS would be winning league championships and CIF championships like LH and SF. And we all know that has NEVER happened.

Schurr Fan said:

I can totally see how people are having a problem with La Serna's Schedule, but what about Pioneer's and Cal Hi's or Bell Garden's. I recently just looked at the SouthEast Cif-SS polls, and personally I think that their a joke. La Serna is ranked second in CIF, and La Habra ranked third behind them. I don't know if anyone went to the La Habra and La Serna Scrimmage, but it wasn't even close (all La Habra). And because La Serna played Glenn, Norwalk, and Montclair they deserve to be ranked number three, same for Pioneer, because they beat Gabrielino, Ontario and Gladstone. What about Cal Hi beating El Monte and Bassett, but when they play a decent team like Rowland they get beat. Same goes for Bell Garden's, they beat Bell and El Rancho, and get beat bad by Arcadia and they are receiving votes, you got to be kidding me. I don't agree with teams in our division that schedule a power house in preseason, but playing easy games just to chalk up a win doesn't give you any confidence when you get to league. For example, teams like Santa Fe, Schurr, La Habra, Troy are all playing tough teams like Fountain Valley, Downey, Pennisula, Westminster, and South Hills, these aren't power house teams, they are teams that are gonna get them ready for the playoffs, in which will give them the best chance in trying to win a CIF title. Santa Fe has been what a 5 or 6 time league champ in a roll, Schurr a 3 time league champ in a roll, their not worried about league, their worried about the playoffs. Mark my words come week 10 Cal Hi, Pioneer, La Serna, and Bell Gardens won't even be ranked. And for Schurr to not even receive votes is ridiculous, we lost to a good Burroughs team from Burbank, and a Downey team 30-25 and had the game won, right after they beat No.3 La Habra. But beat Wilson Hacienda Heights 27-12, who would for sure beat Pioneer, Cal Hi, or La Serna. All I got to say is that everyone one will see this Thursday night when we play at Cal Hi. My prediction 35-6 all Schurr.
