Heralds are legit

| | Comments (76) |

It’s still that little private school, as described by football coach Jon Caffrey, but contrary to the belief by many that Whittier Christian can’t play football, the Heralds, indeed, can play football.

And they play it well.
Just ask Whittier coach Walter Scott.
Whittier Christian’s 4-0 record going into Friday’s game with the Cardinals did not carry the import it deserved, primarily because teams in Division XIII, or the Northeast Division as it is now called, rarely are thought of as powerhouses in the sport (we’re not talking about the likes of Oaks Christian HS here).
That image is usually reserved for the schools with large enrollments that are perennial contenders for postseason honors.
Whittier Christian rolled over a good Whittier team Friday, 41-13, giving up two quick touchdowns on long runs, then blanking the Cardinals the rest of the game.
Afterward, Scott said his team was outplayed in all three phases of the game, offensively, defensively and special teams.
“They had the ball most of the second quarter and that kind of put a damper on our offense, Scott said.
The Heralds used a six-play, 72-yard drive that ended on the first play of the second quarter when Esteban Camarillo took a pass from Phil Hughes, spun out of a tackle at the Whittier 20-yard line and completed a 28-yard scoring run to give the Heralds a 21-13 lead.
Camarillo had made a similar move earlier to break a tackle after catching a pass for a 35-yard gain earlier in the drive.
Camarillo, listed as an extremely generous 5-foot-8, 170 pounds, finished with 239 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries. A large number of his yards came after second and third hits. On some he drove the tackler backward or pulled him along as he fought for extra yards.
“He finishes his run very well, Scott said.
And while Camarillo clearly is the catalyst for the offense, he shares the spotlight with several teammates.
Linebackers Mark Edwards, Nathan Coleman and Ross Ferguson, along with two-way lineman Frank Chavez, were instrumental in curtailing Whittier’s strong ground attack.
Whittier finished with 272 total offense, all of it on the ground. Included were 183 yards on 17 carries, 106 of the yards on back-to-back trips for touchdowns by Isaac Garcia, who continues to establish himself as one of the area’s best ball carriers.
Aside from that, the Cardinals had four possessions in the second half. They needed eight plays to move 57 yards before punting on fourth down. They took 12 plays to go 44 yards (including a 10-yard holding penalty) before turning the ball over after losing a yard on fourth-and 5 at the Heralds’ 15. And they finished the game with an 11-play march that covered just 41 yards and three third-down conversions but ended with an incomplete pass inside the 20 as time ran out.
Their performance Friday against a quality team should make the Heralds a strong contender for both the Alpha League title and to go deep into the Northeast Division postseason playoffs.

Hey Chief:

You know what you meant by throwing in a comment about "girl's ____" in a blog about guy's sports. But if you truly meant it as a compliment to LS water polo, and not a knock on LS football and its fans, my apologies. I have a daughter, and girls deserve respect, right? Good luck to the Chiefs and Lancers this Thursday.

I've always been a stickler for proper grammer and spelling. Oh well. Stick around come baseball season, if you like Chief hardball as well.

lsglory: so am I reading your blog correctly? I’d hate to miss quote you. Are you saying that Edison wasn’t a legitimate D1 school at the time we played them with Brian Shrock at qb? 2003 was a close game but Edison whipped us in 2004 only to get beat later that season by Fountain Valley and guess who ends up on our schedule the following year..FV?? As for us leaving the division we don’t get to make that decision. We are where CIF says we should be and if you disagree with that then I guess you should write to them and stop acting like we have anything to do with it. I see you failed to elaborate on LS preseason schedule. Was that just an oversight or are you just unable to defend your preseason over the past few years including this years 5-0 preseason record????

Emerson: how did that comment make me sexist? La Serna has an awesome girl’s water polo program which seems to carry over to their swim team. Should there be blogs on that subject then LS can talk all they want. Thanks for the English lesson. Maybe some day you can give me a job???

In simple terms, schedule some true caliber opposition, step up to plate! Leave this div, and get some real competition. Since you guys claim to dominate this league year in and year out! How about scheduling OL next year?

With the exception of playing D3 Warren this year would you care to elaborate on LS’s preseason schedule over the years or shall I do the research for you? Maybe it's time for you guys to move up Div II or at least DivIII? When was the last time you played a legit school like Amat, or St John, Or Los Al? You sound a little insecure. Worried that no one respects your team now that you've cheated your way to victory? Worried that the only thing your team is known for is a runningback that shouldn't be there? Well guess what, you should be worried because you're right and that is never going to change.

Find comfort in the fact that you were on the team that beat helpless 0-7 Bassett, lost to Schurr, and beat a 1-5 Buena Park team, 17-7.

We'll just put an asterisk by your league record now that the California Girigsbys have defeated Santa Fe. At least you'll have your memories of the preseason when you were a, somewhat, respespectable team.

Emerson said:

Chieftain alum: I'll wait for the Baseball blog. LS's freshman team from last year, which went 21-0 and beat second place Cal 12-2 and 20-1 in the last two games of the season (and destroyed your SF kids as well), would have smoked the SF varsity, no doubt.

SF..good football and wrestling, but what else?

The SF kids should show some respect: they'll be working for the LS kids in a few years.

Grigsby going to Cal isn’t a Santa Fe – Cal issue. It’s a Cal – Del Rio League issue, we just happened to be the first team to play them. Let’s wait and see how the rest of the league fairs versus The Cal High Grigsbys. If you are all content with Cal beating Santa Fe then your season is a success no matter where you finish.

LSglory – “whaa, whaa, whaa our preseason record is legit and we deserve to be ranked as high as we are. Are you and the rest of the La Serna faithful ready for another third place finish in league???? The view from the top might change but you’re still going to end up stuck in the middle again!!!!!!! Go unbeaten in league five years straight in football and maybe you can use all caps for the glory part of your tag as well. Or you could just wait for the girl’s waterpolo blogs.

The freshman game ended in a fight. There was a near fight at the JV game between a few coaches that end up with the Cal bus driving behind the school chanting Santa Fe sucks while hanging out of the bus as they left. To the JV head coach…….pure class act by the way.

So why would Santa Fe even think of shaking their hands after the varsity game win or lose? The ex-St Paul coaches at Cal’s are bring their brand of crap to the Del Rio league. There is a reason Santa Fe stopped playing St Paul. And I fear it’s only going to get worse if CIF doesn’t step in!! Okay Cal you got Grigsby to play and he did what he was supposed to do in helping you beat SF and he’ll probably bring you a league title this year so make sure you savor it unless you can pull another rabbit out of your hat for next year. All private schools better take stock of your players. On a personal note I thought it was pretty ironic at the game when Grigsby went down just before the end if regulation and the entire Cal side went silent. I swear I heard a collective GASP as if all Cal’s dreams were going to blow up in their faces.

So does anyone know Matt Navarro’s opinion of the game???? He just might have the best view of the rest of their season this year. But then again I’m sure they might blow a team or two out before the end of the season and he’ll get to handle the ball again after Grigsby does his job. Is it to late for his to transfer to St Paul?????

loveshsfootball,

When you watch kids jump for joy for finally beating an opponent that has not been beaten for five years it should give, even the opposing coach, some joy.

But when you know that the one factor that beat you should not have been there in the first place, it could lead a coach to forget about sportsmanship.

Class should be shown to Navarro, the kid Ancich hung up to dry.

Condor60 said:

Everyone needs to stop complaining about Grigsby going to Cal Hi. He had practiced with Cal Hi all summer and at the lastr second went back to St. Paul, and then back to Cal Hi. Besides, it's not like Santa Fe has all horrible players and it was an unfair advantage to them for us to have Grigsby. They have plenty of great players on their team. And they have had plenty of great players in past years as well. No one complained about all of Santa Fe's great players from these past 5 unbeaten years. How come no one is talking baout Santa Fe's transfer from Pasadena? Santa Fe always has great players every year and no one complains about it but the second Cal Hi gets a good player everyone is up in arms about it.

I know I am off topic but it is a damm shame what CIF pulled on the entire Del Rio League. To read the paper Saturday Morning and see Grisby 39 Carries 213 yards is pitfull. There are some adults out there who need to look themselves in the mirror because they have no honor for this great game we all love. It is too bad that the Whittier Union District would allow someone to work for this district who has a "what ever it takes" attitude to win. What is going to happen next year when another player from a local school tranfers to Cal Hi? I guess time will tell. And to CIF KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK YOU ARE DOING YOU A GREAT JOB!! MAY BE YOU SHOULD HAVE RECOMEDED YOUR PURSUING VICTORY WITH HONOR ONE-DAY COACHES TRAINING TO CAL HI AND THERE COACHING STAFF as offerred in your website!!

Emerson said:

I'd agree that top to bottom, there are stronger leagues in the same CIF division, but Del Rio is by no means the weakest in Division III. These things fluctuate year to year, and in certain sports lower division schools can even compete very well against the bigger schools, especially in sports that don't put a premium on physical size as in football and basketball. In baseball, for example, Sonora (Division IV) has done well in a tough pre-season schedule and tournaments with Division I and II schools. (Of course, they're loaded with players who live in other areas and get transfers to attend the school instead of La Habra, La Serna or Cal where the kids actually live. They don't recruit, but good players do gravitate to what are perceived to be good programs).

And loveshsfootball, if your beef is with the alleged over-coverage by the Daily News, why bash LS? The kids and coaches at LS have nothing to do with that. Hit the target you're aiming at, dude.

loveshsfootball said:

the reason we so-called knock LS is because the other schools dont get equal coverage and they shoukld but lets be honest-the del rio league is one of the weaker leagues in the area and all theses schools would have trouble competing in other leagues-good example is LS in basketball where they win league but always get whipped in the playoffs. ok im off my soapbox now.

Emerson....well said.

I appreciate the fact that we now have an avenue to express our passion for our teams. We should consider ourselves fortunate that WDN and its sister publications have increased their coverage of prep sports. You don't see this kind of coverage in the LA Times or the OC Register.

I don't beileve there is a concentrated effort to purposely feature one team over the other. The WDN wants to sell newspapers, so they go where the stories are. It cracked me me up when one blogger accused Roger of getting his kicks out of making the Whittier Cardianls look bad. He was just reporting what happened. Geez, where was that blogger when the WDN showed Whittier the love later in the week with the article about the 4 running backs. See...an interesting story...and they went to where the story was.

Like Emerson said, be proud of our local teams.

emerson said:

Hey loveshsfootball: read what I said: LS has the most dominant program, "taking all the sports in total", including boys and girls. My point was simply to say to the army of LS bashers out there that athletics is strong at LS at this period of time. It is a fact. Check the standings from last year in all sports and you'll see it is true. But so what!!! If it is Cal, Whittier, Santa Fe, so be it and good for them. I graduated from Whittier High in the late 70's and we always saw LS as the "rich kids school". Many still see it that way and always want to bash them. It is really stupid and petty. Santa Fe has been great in football and wrestling. Whittier is strong in water polo. LS rules in baseball and many other sports. Things are what they are, and I am just tired of all the carping about LS any time Roger starts a blog subject. Saying LS is a good school or has a good team in any sport is not a knock on your favorite team.

Good luck to all of the area teams this year in league. Del Rio is pretty strong, as is WC in their league, and all of us in the area should be proud of how well the local schools are doing.

Sports, even HS football, is the dessert of life, not the meal. Ultimately, it is all about the kids, not posters to this blog. Good to see a lot of true, passionate fans, though.

So, keep the passion, but the knocking of LS, or any other school only shows the insecurity or jealousy of the poster. (Okay, off the soapbox.)

It’s not Potts’s fault he was chosen but come on WDN….spread the love.

Go back and click on La Serna 41, El Monte 14 and see if it read as those numbers being his first half stats. Don’t criticize me, I didn’t write it!! Maybe these blogs aren’t for you. Maybe you should go find yourself a nice chat room where everyone pats each other on the back!!!!

Does every article has to pass through the blessings of mighty Sante Fe? By the looks of the Mighty Powerful you both might want to start spending your time not crying but concentrating on having an offense. As you laugh and joke about La Serna weak preseason and lack of scoring, by the looks of your stats the all mighty Chiefs have scored 10 and 14 points the last 2 games and are averaging 235 yards in total offense. As the Del Rio season begins you have some of your key players hurt and could barely beat Bell Gardens and don't tell us they are a great team. The truth will all come out over the next 5 weeks. I would have to agree with the herald fan and "j" in the above mentioned posts. It is a big deal when a small school such as Whittier Christian or Cantwell beat a much larger public school. The fact of the matter is that schools such as Cantwell and Whittier Christian stress academics, discipline, tradition and teamwork. The principles spill onto the football field and are very evident. Not to mention schools such as Whittier, La Serna, Montebello, Schurr and El Rancho have a much larger pool of talent to select from. When you see a roster of players of only 30 playes defeat a school with over 60 players it is a big deal. I have attended high school games for over 10 years and find the smaller schools such as WCHS and CSHM to be rich in tradition, heart and discipline.

herald fan said:

Why shouldn't this be talked about. Props to Whittier Christian for stepping up to play a tough public school. This is a huge win for WC. I was at the game, WHittier players were dirty, and undisciplined. WC won with class and pride, I will be intersting to see how the rest of the Del RIo does against Whittier. If WC continues to play like that, they will win their division.

j said:

Let's give small schools credit. I have work in 3 school disricts for 30 years. It starts in the classroom which moves onto the playing field. The public schools are losing a battle that parents and school districts don't really want to talk about or care about. Who's teaching and coaching these kids.(Of course some like it just the way it is right now) The fact is that Santa Fe is the strongest Program in whittier area, but fails to make it to the finals. Why? We should be seeing more of these kids in college football progams. Does anybody know what happen to small running back from Schurr High.
