The moment of truth ...
The Whittier Daily News 2006 All-Area football team is scheduled to be announced tomorrow (12/27).
It has been interesting reading the posts concerning who should and who shouldn't be included.
It's never easy finalizing the teams, but two things are always certain:
One, those who are selected deserve to be there;
Two, there will be players who are left off, not because they weren't deserving, but because there are a predetermined number of spots and they became victims of the numbers.
In any case, it has been an interesting season of football, and those of you who have participated here have helped make it so.

"After Thanksgiving
What does it matter what school these kids go to? It's between the kids and their parents where they end up. It really doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. I'm sure going to El Rancho you can still get into college. At St. Paul there are fewer kids in the classroom but it's probally better at the end of the day. I think these kids can go where ever and who cares if they played pop warner football. He has an opportunity to go to a better rounded school.
What do you mean get over yourselves? What is it that we need to get over? He was an impact player on the Freshmen team, and likely would be competing for the starting spot on varsity this season. ER also helps its kids get to college, ER prepared me well for college. I never went to st paul, but I have friends that have attended both St Paul and ER. Guess what, they say there really is no difference, just less kids per classroom. Why didnt he attend St Paul from the get go? I will tell you why, because he didnt play pop warner in Pico and St Paul didnt know he existed until week 5 of the 06 season.
ERDons....
Get over yourselves. The kid that transfered is a freshman and not a high impact player. Ever think he transfered because he was looking for a better academic environment?
He's in honors classes at St. Paul, a college prep school. Perhaps his parents were looking for a different academic enviroement.
Just another kid from the Ranch somehow ending up at St Paul over the winter break, nothing new, just thought that was over with when Ancich left St Paul. Ohh well we are used to it..... Chavez, Guzman, Arias, now Morales....
Yo, ERDONS;
Help me understand your latest post.
Looks like coach gonzalez is also the recruiter of the year.
The harping on this blog is funny. Even though I agree with all the Schurr fans but I do agree with the Choice they made for COY. I think that if the tables were turned St. Paul fans would be just as outraged as the Schurr fans. The bottom line is that you have to look at the big picture from game 0 to the last game. All Schurr fans need to celebrate their championship and who knows maybe the two schools will meet up like everyone talks about. Let both schools do the talking on the field. In all fairness Coach Gonzalez was the right choice for COY.
I think Coach Dick not getting COY is a joke. From the beginning no one thought that Schurr wouldn't even have a chance at winning league, on all these blogs everyone was talking crap saying how horrible our league was and that we would just get beat in the playoffs like we did last year against Arroyo, but I kept saying this was a different team with some different coaches. And after each and every playoff game we won we were picked to get killed. I really believe that the St.Paul coach got it because they surprised everyone by even winning in the playoffs. And that's a great job in willing those kids to those wins - but let's be real winning some playoff games compared to winning the CIF CHAMPIONSHIP when no one that you could win your league or even one playoff game - and handing it to DRL powerhouse Santa Fe in the championship. You make the decision. If St.Paul would have one the CIF Title and Schurr would have went to the third round and lost to La Habra - would Coach Dick get COY? Not a chance - he wouldn't even be a consideration, it would the the St.Paul Coach hands down. And we would say nothing, unless say no one the CIF title, then it would up for grabs. If your a St.Paul fan really understand the situation and put yourself in our shoes, how would you feel? If your team won the CIF title when no thought you would and then a team with a 7-6 record and gets to the semis gets COY. Would you feel that is right? I don't think so. And don't get me wrong - I think St.Paul did a good job, but they didn't win the title - plain and simple.
And as Mr. Murray stated in what his answer to you, Montbello and Schurr are in the WDN circulation area and the other schools are not. You can make a case for Sonora, but Sunny Hills, Troy and Servite? Last I checked those weren't big circulation areas for a Whittier paper just like Whittier is not a big area for the OC Register.
The SGVN and PSN pick their own teams as well.
I would like to restate what I said in an earlier blog: Schurr is not in the Whittier area and COY and POY honors should go to those in the local area. Schurr and Montebello should be grouped with another area (San Gabrel Vally Tribune?). Why isn't Sonora, Sunny Hills, Troy,
Servite, etc. part of the mix?
One other point regarding this blogsite....the author or "posted by" field should be above the horizontal line that separates each blog. It's a simple fix, Mr. Murray.
Speaking of next year...from what I hear these are some of the teams St. Paul has scheduled for next year:
-Servite (D1)
-Bishop Amat (D1)
-Crespi (D1)
-Chaminade (D3)(League)
-St. Francis (D3)(League)
-Alemany (D3) (League)
-Cantwell Sacred Heart (D7 but an up and coming program.
Hope to see some local area teams on that schedule.
congrats to coach gonzalez!!! congrats to coach dick!! i think the right decision was made for coach of the year. the reason being, toughness of schedule. put schurr up against some of the teams that st.paul played and maybe you have a different outcome in wins/lose column. for all those people who have all these opionions wake up and smell the coffee. coach gonzalez did a remarkable job with the talent or lack of talent that he had to use. it was great to see those young men respond. st.paul should be heavy favorites next year with all the returners coming back.
Thank you for acknowledging the hard work of so many deserving athletes! I am very proud of my son and his team. Out of curiosity, does anyone know when the All- CIF team is announced? Even though it's b-ball season, we are looking forward to football already! See you on the field next year!
Of course you know my support will go to Coach Gonzalez. I hope my support makes the cut and doesn't get deleted like all the other blogs. We at St. Paul are proud of our school, team and Coaches. Our coaching staff was great they showed these kids how to play with heart and dignity and the Swordsmen played like that until the end. Great decision for Coach of the year. Thank you Coach Gonzalez and the whole coaching staff.
Lets see if this blog reaches the website. I just want to say Congratulations to Coach Gonzalez, job well done. I saw almost every school in the area play this year and I will say I was impressed with St. Paul. After reading everything about the hurdles Coach Gonzalez had to overcome and the way St. Paul played on the field. I think you made a great pick for Coach of the Year. Good luck next year St. Paul.
Speaking to other parents this is about our 20th blog that hasn't got on.. maybe this one will. We at St. Paul are proud of the pick you made for Coach of the Year. Coach Gonzalez did a great job for his first year as Head Coach. He had huge shoes to fill and we are proud with the end results. Great job to Schurr High School. Once again thank you to Coach Gonzalez and his coaching staff.
Well Murray why couldn't Coach Dick be Coach of the Year. If you were going to pick the St Paul Coach. Why didn't you pick Coach Scott from Whittier. I feel bad for Coach Dick. What's wrong with you.
What happened to all the other posts in this blog? There are at least 2 I posted that have disappeared. They were pretty tame so I don't think it was because they were inflamatory.
Why aren't our messages posting and only Schurr's comments are? We would like to support your decision for Coach of the Year. We saw first hand what a great job Coach Gonzalez did for our son and his teammates. He taught these kids respect, honor and pride. They showed it off and on the field. Congratulations to Coach Gonzalez and his staff for a job well done. I hope this message gets on the board.
This is about the 10th message to agree with Mr. Murray for Coach of the Year somehow these messages keep getting deleted. Once again great job to Coach Dick and his Staff but St. Paul Coach Gonzalez and his staff are well deserved of this honor. We are football fans not supporters and we think you made a great choice. I hope this comment post or I will e-mail Roger Murray myself.
I am well aware of the old saying,"The kids get all the glory, the coaches get all the blame". However, this year Coach Dick deserved some of the glory. I was fortunate enough to see those kids progress week by week. This wasnt the most talented Schurr team I've seen. But I can attest that Coach Dick had these kids playing with heart and discipline. He really had them believing in themselves when people thought they didnt have a chance.
I was most impressed when in the waning moments of the SEM playoff game, when the outcome was already decided. SEM delivered some cheap shots to a couple of the Schurr players, and the game looked like it was going to get seriously out of hand. Coach Dick barked a command, and all the Schurr players huddled in formation on the sidline until the game was done. IMO this was much better than some cheap act of retaliation.
This is just one example of many that I witnessed during the season that tells what an oustanding job Coach Dick did.
My hats off to Coach Dick and his staff. I just want you to know you have every Spartan fans vote for COY. Not only for winning CIF, but for taking a big step in bringing back the tradition and pride to Spartan Football. It was real classy when you brought back Coach Davis to lead the kids in a pre-game "hit" drill.
Im sure before its all said and done, you will have more than one of these COY awards. Keep up the good work.
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE WITH THIS NONSENSE!! COACH GONZALEZ IS WELL DESERVING ALSO & HAD A GREAT SEASON AS WELL. BUT!! COACH ELVIN DICK IS "MORE DESERVING & HAD A BETTER SEASON!!" HE COACHED A TEAM THAT WAS UNDERATED & MADE THEM BELIEVE THEY CAN DO SOMETHING. I MEAN COME ON THEY TOOK THE SOUTHERN SECTION SOUTHEAST DIVISION TITLE WHEN EVERYONE WAS DOUBTING THEM. WEEK IN WEEK OUT HIS TEAM WAS PICKED TO LOSE BUT HE HAD HIS TEAM AT ANOTHER MIND SET!
I'M SORRY MURRAY BUT THIS IS JUST OUT-RIGHT RIDICULOUS! EVEN YOUR OWN AREA BLOGGERS ARE DISAGREEING. COME ON, WAKE UP!!
I couldn't agree more with the observation that Elvin Dick should have been coach of the year.
I guess in the eyes of Mr. Murray, winning a CIF title doesn't mean much. But if Jack Mahlstede would have won a CIF title, he would have a been coach of the year....unbelieveable.
One of the brightest young coaches in the area gets the sham of not being coach of the year. Once again, it shows that the All-CIF team has a lot more prestiege that the all-area team.
After all, Steven Cano should have been a lock first-team selection...but what do I know, I just coach the damn game.
Roger,
I have to agree with the comments from calhifan, fballfan, chieftainabout whom you choose. The coach should pick on what they did overall in the results, not your personal jugement. It also would to be nice to see these kids who get top honors on what GPA they have and what college they are attending. I hope this is not their only highlight in life because 80 percent of these players you never hear about anymore and not just football, any sport. Let's start helping these kids roger.
You are a joke murray, I think it's time to cut your ties to these whittier schools....everyone knows you have your favorites. You did Elvin Dick wrong. Wake up, they won the Championship. You say you read the threads, no where in any thread did they say Sy. Paul coach should have won....YOU SUCK!!!!!!!
How do you pick the St. Paul coach as coach of the year....over Elvin DIck that is just wrong, there is no way to justify that...they went 7-6 and SHS wins the Title....that is just wrong...
COY is a down right JOKE!!! SP had a good season and probably one much better than most expected with Nick’s departure but Coach Dick at Schurr got the shaft.
Congratulations to your great season & championship once again.
