Time to start thinking about all-area candidates ...

| | Comments (22) |

Santa Fe guard Jaycob Camacho turned in an impressive performance in leading the Chiefs past West Covina in Wednesday night's CIF playoff game, and it brought to mind the glut of candidates for recognitioin at the position on the Daily News All-Area team.

On the other hand, the selection for center is very limited, with less than a handful of prospects and even those with varied qualifications.
The forward spot is a bit more relaxed, but with the all-area teams limited to just five players per team, including the one selected as Player of the Year, deserving players are bound to become victims of the numbers.
'Suburban League BBalI ... Go LM' posted an interesting list of candidates and all are legit candidates. See how easy it is.
Uh, yeah.
Primarily more interested in opinions on the subject than actually seeking help in making the selections, how about sharing your thoughts.

Wow ! Looking at Anonymous's 2-16-2007 All League Del Rio picks and Mr. Murray's early season picks are both DEAD-ON Correct, you both really know your BBall Games !
Looking at all the latest e-mails, it appears things are really getting nasty with regards to All-Area BBall Selection, but I guess that's what parents and spectators do to the game, Mr. Murray, you and your staff know the game well, far better than all of us sending in these e-mails...Pick your All-Area team and let everyone else be DAMNED !

Matt Piazza, your right La Mirada did beat Santa Fe, but La Mirada won by 6 so it was a close game. Also, Santa Fe was missing three players that game. Two players were in football and one missed beacause personal reasons and two of those individuals contributed to the team. Dont get me wrong, La Mirada is a GREAT team and i have all the respect for them, but the Coach of the Year honors can go either way to Geren or Kaupang

I'm getting real bad vibes that Larry Kaupang will not be Coach of the Year. Hope I'm wrong, because that would be wholly unjust. Here are 10 reasons:

1) First-year coach who managed to motivate and discipline players who would have never made it through another year with the former coach; at least two were already quitting before he was fired; if he stayed, there's no way that McGill and others could have survived the torture. A talented team would have ended in tatters;

2) Brought incredible excitment back into a moribund program;

3) First 20-win season at school since Abe Lincoln;

4) Beat Artesia (only one other coach has managed to do that, and he coaches a national power);

5) Was three minutes away from the Div. 1-AA semi-finals and a very, very likely spot in state championships;

6) In rematches with Suburban League powers Artesia and Mayfair on the road late in the season, had his team within striking distance in both fourth quarters;

7) Won the El Rancho Pride Classic, defeating Sante Fe along the way as well as Warren (who destroyed Santa Fe);

8) Never lost a game to anyone that it wasn't supposed to;

9) Out of 29 games, had his team in the game in the fourth quarter in every game but one;

10) His team played in a much tougher league and experienced much tougher competition than any coach in the Whittier Daily News Area.

How about some consideration for Coach Larry Kaupang of La Mirada for Coach of the Year???
Pretty impressive in his first season at La Mirada.
21-8 season with a close Division IAA quarterfinals lost to Compton?
That's a rather impressive resume ah Mr. Murray?

Hey Mr.Murray, I have to agree with everyone else, Jaycob Camacho and Taylor Siemens are the best in the area hands down and I have seen them both play this year!! Both have had excellent seasons. Camacho has put Santa Fe basketball on the map and Taylor has done the same as well. A Co-Player of the Year would be a pretty good choice Mr.Murray. Camacho was named Del Rio League MVP last night and Taylor was named 1st Team All Suburban League!! Great season guys and goodluck in the future!!

Coach Henry Wineburger said:

I belive co-players of the year would be fair, having seen Camacho and Siemens both play this year, I would have a hard time not giving it to both of them.Both great leaders and took their teams deep into the playoffs.

roger-i was able to watch santa fe boys play in several games including their playoff games and i am so impressed by the leadership and talent of Jaycob Camacho-he should definetly be considered for area player of the year along with the top La Mirada player and Mike Geren has done a great job and should be named coach of the year. SantaFe played a great game last night in losing to the second seeded team Renaissance Academy-all in all a great effort for the Chiefs and a very succesful season.

Hey Murray, Mike Geren did a great job this year he should be the coach of the year. And that Coles kid should be first team not Jaycob Camacho.

Roger Murray-

I have been recommending that you fix this blog because the author of the comment is listed below the horizontal line and it looks like it belongs to the next blog. Many are confused by who has actually created the posting.
Now, it looks like you are even confused! Your comment referring to "Suburban League BBall...Go LM!!" and the list of All Area potentials should have been attributed to "Anonymous".
It should not be that difficult to correct this format.

Mr. Murray, "Suburban League BBall...Go LM!!!" had a good point, do you think it is possible that there can be a "Co-Player of the Year" of the area?

d-hay*28 said:

JEREMY GERARDO-GUARD
SCHURR HIGH SCHOOL
-DESERVES TO BE ON THE 1ST TEAM AT LEAST, IF NOT M.V.P. HE AVERAGED 22 PTS, 7 BOARDS, & 2 STEALS/ GAME. ALSO PLAYED CENTER WHEN NEEDED. ALL THIS WHILE BEING DOUBLE TEAMED PRACTICLY EVERY GAME. LED SCHURR TO ITS ALMONT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP.

At the Santa Fe game last nite. The pg from Santa Fe Cole hurt almost hurt them. He turns the ball over to much. He to flashy. Well good luck on Tuesday.

La Sernas center Vinnie Hiatt should be at least first team all area if not MVP!!!! The kid puts up consistant numbers in every game!!!!

Thanks for thoughtfully reading and listening to my "opinions" Mr. Murray.
And now to my thoughts...
With out a doubt it has come down to La Mirada's Taylor Siemens and Santa Fe's Jaycob Camacho.
Taylor has displayed excellence consistently throughout the year. LM basketball program has been on a unbelievable run this year, and Taylor is a major reason for this. When LM gets down, Taylor puts his guys on his back and leads them.
I think the most impressive factor about Taylor, is that no matter the situation, Siemens stays focused and doesn't let the emotions of the game get to him.
Jaycob Camacho has also done the same for Santa Fe. Camacho has been impressive and displayed phenomenal guard play all year long and has definetly raised Santa Fe's recognition around the area.
Has The WDNews ever had Co-MVP's Mr. Murray???
Any possibilities???
What's your "thoughts" on this scenario???

F. Drew Harris (CAL)
C. Ruben Sanchez (SFHS)

Sixth Man

I think it would more fun to talk about the future terminiation of the Cal Hi football coach. We all knew he was a cheater.

Right on the mark Roger! That is my choice in deed. The DRL meets next week to pick their own. Coach Gerin should be proud to have that big boy in the paint.....

Although Cantwell Sacred Heart had a down year Cynthia Duarte Sr Guard/Forward (probably they best all-around female athlete in CSHM history) had a great year averaging almost 20pts a game against a very strong schedule, Bishop Amat, Bishop Montgomery, Brea Olinda, San Juan Capistrano Serra, Dominguez, Schurr.
