605 ALL-STAR FB WRAP: Worth the price of a ticket
Rich Estrella called to put a cap on the recent 40th 605 All-Star
Football Classic that featured some of the southland's best high school
football players and was won by the Pete Gonzalez-coached East, 23-12,
over the Gary Cordray-coached West.
Estrella says the crowd which showed up at La Mirada High School's stadium was about 5,800, "which is a pretty good turnout."
Artesia standout Le Quan Lewis was named the game's Most Valuable
Player after rushing six times for 85 yards, including a 59-yard
touchdown sprint for the game's last touchdown. He also had three
receptions for 58 yards.
Gonzalez and his staff are being given high marks for organization
and preparation, the players are said to have performed, all things considered, up to expectations, hence the game apparently was well worth the price of admission.

If so, sound off, with a brief explanation.

Oh yeah i almost forgot to ask you, have you ever considdered drawing Lucifer? As in before he fell from glory. While he was still beautiful and perfect according to the descriptions given of him in Ezekiel 28v12 & Isaiah 14v12. Those verses gives some insight on what the prince of darkness used to look like while still in service to God in heaven.
Very good article.
I read where Pollack studied indian sand painting and was very influenced by it. You can certainly see the influence especially with his use of color in No. 5.

there is about 6 goodplayers that should make it on the west list thats from cabrillo high in Long Beach that are seniors . im not going to put names but i can put number 1. #24 2. #25 3. #14. 4. #1. 5. #50 6. #54
those players should get a spot so please call 951-7700 and ask for aj luke for information on these 6 players thank you and have a great day.
Hank, well we know for sure they are winners and have the foundation of what it takes to get to the top. This will help them succeed in life. I will be honest, they may not have the best athletes in the city but they have the biggest hearts. In the real world intangibles beat talent most everytime
605 Observer,
I'm starting to question your thinking. If Santa Fe was a one man team why didn't anyone else beat them? And as for Schurr having "great" athletes, please tell me about them. Orduno is an athletic QB, and Schurr might have had a few good players but I'd like to see what these "great" athletes can do at the next level.
Hank,
This is why you don't know what your talking about - Santa Fe was a one man team with Pellum, shut him down and it's over - that's exactly what Schurr did. Schurr was a better all around TEAM. They had great athletes all over the field, not just at one or two positions. That's why they won the CIF title.
605 Observer,
Thats a pretty weak arguement. How good would the Santa Fe coaches be if they had Whittier's talent and how good would Santa Fe be if they were coached by the Whittier coaches. We obviously don't know. BTW, ask Long Beach Poly parents what they think of their headman. The most talent in SoCal and still has trouble winning championships. Plus, you cant tell me that Schurr had more talent than Santa Fe? It must've been the coaches.
So Rich Estrella, let me ask you this. If the St.Paul coaches had coached the West team instead of the East team - who would have won? And please don't give some nice guy answer, say truth from what you personally think.
Wow, I wonder how many kids want to go to SP because they have chosen to make a change. Is CIF going to be called everytime a kid wants to go to SP in that case CIF be ready, because I know for a fact alot of young kids like what they see and they want to go in that direction. I am a parent of a 8th grader and I live in Montebello and I will be driving to SFS everyday because that is where my son WANTS to go to, as a parent I was very pleased with what I saw at that school. He is a good enough athlete to go to any private school around and for the record he has been confronted by coaches from a few different schools (public & private). SP coaches never spoke to him but when he went to the school for openhouse they let him know they have heard of him. So let that be said. I back up what everyone else says "just stop hating on SP". Best of luck to all programs.
the 605 game was pretty boring, mainly because there were penalties on almost every single play. the east was very disciplined and it seems like the west just wanted to straight out fight people. that's usually how it is though; shoot it was like that when i played in the 605 game. But what i liked about the game was the fact that a santa fe coach actually helped out for the east side; among the st. paul coaches. Especially since i just heard that young qb from santa fe is going to st. paul. Also, i've heard that about 5 or 6 high schools have called CIF in regards to st. paul recruiting all their star athletes. hopefully this is false because it'd be a shame for st. paul to get a bad rap for something that they already do; but actually getting caught. oh how i love to keep it interesting on this blog. Roger, please shut this thing down.
Hey Roger,
Just a note of thanks for all the support the Whittier Daily News provided this year. I know it's a busy time with the finals in several sports going on at the same time. It's interesting to hear the comments on your blog. It's too bad you have sooo many haters out there no matter what you do. Anyone who passes judgement on any coaching staff in an all star game, really needs to walk a few miles in their shoes. First off Pete Gonzalez of St. Paul did a fantastic job this year. It appears you haters don't know this man very well. He is well organized and fearless. I was also very impressed with coach Jimenez as well. For anyone to talk trash about the way they coached this game is just morally bankrupt. He, his staff and this East team stared down the West this year. Plain and simple. If you on the Eastside can't enjoy it then just let it be. Most of those arguements have nothing to do with the game. It just sounds like sour grapes. How bad can that St. Paul staff be? They become only the 7th staff to beat the talent laden West in 21 tries. That alone speaks volumes. Lastly Roger, the game was good, the crowd was once again huge and it was great honoring two of the finest coaches in the United States, in 605 alums Ernie Johnson and Marijon Ancich. We have a lot of stuff planned for next years game and will also be making an announcement soon, that will impact the Southern California Football Community.
Thanks again Roger.
My Best,
Rich Estrella
605 All Stars
Hi Whittier area bloggers,
I read on a football message board that Pioneer looked impressive at the L.A,Watts passing games, I believe they went 4 & 0 over the weekend, with scores of 40 to 7, 36 to 8, 48 to 16, and 18 to 15.[vs Washington ,Cleveland,Aminoand Inglewood, in respective order] I played their in 77/78 so it got my attention, can anyone tell me how their looking for this next season? How do the skill positions look? Do they have any size or speed in the secondary or at the reciever or rb. positions?
also how is the OB.
Fan...
Sound like you are somewhat bitter that YOU didn't get enough playing time.
Give me a break, the coaching staffs on both sides had 3 weeks to prepare and learn players. It wouldn't of matter who coached. you ever think that these coaches played the guys who put the most effort forward at practice?
You've got 70+ kids on each side and trying to give everyone ample playing time is not easy.
So, look at it this way, you got to be part of the game and move on.
Hank,
First of all both teams had good players on both sides, but the West did have much more talent (no one's denying that). My point is that the West coaching was so awful that they couldn't even win with more talented players. What if say the La Habra coaches or Santa Fe coaches would have coached the West team, would the East still win? I don't think so, those coaches were a joke. I would of took some pop warner coaches over them. And how come no one responded about the St. Paul coaches being Whittier coaches - would they beat Santa Fe? Yeah right, of course their wouldn't be any comments about that. Because everyone already knows the result, they wouldn't come close. But hey they have great discipline..... and that's all everyone talks about on these blogs when commenting on the St. Paul coaching staff, dont get me wrong discipline is needed I agree - but knowledge of the game, strategy and coaching experience is also needed and I just don't see that at St. Paul. But that's just my opinion and if some people don't like it, I don't care.
605 Observer,
Aren't you contradicting yourself. You say, "it's easy to coach good players that are reqruited." If it's easy to coach good players then why didn't the West team win the 605 game since they obviously had more talent?
605 hater,
I do need to chime in on this because this doesn't sound like it had anything to do with the game. Your just raining on their parade. If it was the Whittier staff it sounds like you would have loved the game. One more comment I don't know if you went to any Saint Paul games last year, I did and they had no outstanding athlete that dominated that field so I beleive you are very wrong and they are a well coached team. From what I understood their outstanding athlete left and opened up the playing field for a few young men.
okay okay the game was a week ago and yeah some of the things that went on there didnt seem right but my concern is how players get this great honor to be in this game for one more final play before they graduate and yet the st paul coaches always played the same players . i am sorry but there shouldnt be no favortism in any sport but there is let me ask the st paul coaches how well did u really know all your players that played in the 605 game or was it oh just cuz u knew there parents more thats why they played more then others. how can u keep one player in for both halfs and yet u have many others who have made more plays or catches or yards then others my personnal opinion for next year should be nominating a coaching staff that really has knowledge on who they get on thier team...
605....
You do realize that Gonzalez was coaching the EAST team and not the WEST team. The West team was heavily favored but Gonzalez got more out of his team than the talent laden West.
Ordunz was on the West team as well.
As far as play selection you got to rememebr they only had 3 weeks to get ready so I'm not surprised that either coach only had a limited selection of plays.
I also don't think you've ever seen St. Paul play. Bigger players and a horrible defense?
We've never claimed that St. Paul is the greatest team ever. However, they are a shining example of what undersized, overacheiving team players with heart can accomplish.
Hank,
I know that they were heavily that's what makes it so frustrating to the players, fans, and to all the coaches watching the game. That was exactly my point.
Blogger,
You don't know nothing, always talking like St.Pual is the greatest team ever. There not even that good and if you put the St. Paul coaches at Whittier High School would they beat Santa Fe? They wouldn't have a chance, it's easy to coach good players that are reqruited. There offense and defense are horrible, but that have the players that are bigger, faster and stronger than everyone else in the Whittier area to make plays and win-so that's why they probably would beat all the DRL teams including Santa Fe. Let's get this straight it's not the coaching it's the great players and great job of reqruiting that keeps St. Paul good. And that's the truth and all the coaches and players at St. Paul and in the Whittier area know this, so you stop hating and sign up for the St. Paul camp JR.
footballfan,
I agree that the St. Paul coaches bring a ton of discipline. That's what seperates St. Paul. They aren't the biggest, strongest, or fastest but they bring it. If they continue to bring athletes and can stay disciplined they'll be tough to beat. Congrats to Coach Gil Jimenez and Pete Gonzalez
605 Observer,
According to an article from the Whittier Daily News the day before the game, the West was heavily favored. The West had dominated the recent meeting between the two and was said to have the most D1 athletes.
A fan,
you are right the kid from Schurr did a great job. This has nothing to do with anything except great kids on the field showing their talent. Great athletes and students were on that field. Hopefully they will all attend their own graduation ceremonies.
One more thing you really need to go over this Schurr vs. St. Paul thing it will never happen because Schurr won't let it.
O.k. i'm reading these blogs and for the record my son is not a St. Paul player he plays for an area school. His words were this: this is the most disciplined team I have ever been on. He spoke so highly of Coach Gonzales and his staff. Our neighbor is a good little football player and he has recommended him to attend Saint Paul. So all these other comments are ridiculous. From a parent thank you coaching staff from the East side you did a great job. People who are just spectators will always have an off opinion.
Hey 605 observer, lets guesse who you are? The same hater for SP all year long, it don't matter what they do or don't you will always hate them. So take your sorry comments somewhere else.
For the record it was a good game I know that the East side could have ran that score up if they wanted to. So hater good luck this year and the years after going around hating schools that do good. Maybe one day you can get on a coaching staff. Change your name from observer to baby.
yea i think like 2 other big linemen from Cal-Hi want to go to St. Paul do you know there names yet? and if thats true St. Paul would be unstoppable, anyone know more info?
Great job by the East....but I would like to add that there was no mention of the great 2nd half performance by ALL-CIF Quarterback Joe Orduno from Schurr High School. He once again showed why Schurr won the CIF Championship in Football. Coach Gonzales, great job on coaching the East but if you ask me Orduno stole the show from ST. PAUL AGAIN!
The 605 game was great. The East should've really destroyed the West. There were a few times the East was in the redzone and either fell short or kicked a field goal. The St. Paul players played exceptionally well. Especially, Joe Morales (QB sack and a monster hit on the West RB) and Josh Gracieaux.
Honestly, I think the game was pretty boring. The St.Paul coaches were a lot more prepared the then opposing staff. But their offense scheme is just so predictable and horrible it's hard to watch. But they had a Norm Chow performance compared to the East coaches, they had far more talent than the West and ran about 4 or 5 different plays. It was pathetic. I sat on the East side and you heard nothing but complaining from all the parents and even coaches from other teams, not to mention all of the players on the East side after the game. They honestly told me that they had six offense plays. They were even telling other players that were juniors, that they better hope they don't get these coaches next year. Whoever chooses the coaches really needs to do a better job. And from what I have witnessed in past 605 all star games mostly the coaches try to play everyone in the first half, but play the players that are producing results to try and win in the second half. If they would of left CIF player of the year Joseph Orduno in at QB for the second half they would of won easy, even with them running 4 or 5 plays. He makes plays and you can obviously see he's a winner. But that's just my opinion.
I was at the Cal hi spring ball game and saw the big lineman Cervantes across the field in the stands. People were talking about that he was going to go to ST.Paul and two others were thinking about leaving or not playing they had about 95 players on the field. Santa fe had its game also anybody have news on them. I heard that the back up qb last year was playing wr and one of the rbs is now the qb is that true.
It was a good game, the east was in control all game long. Gonzalez and his staff did a great job. The west had the biggest and best D-line that I have seen in a long time, and the schurr QB was a man they should have played him earler it would have been very close.
