Week 3 results: Some amazing individual efforts ...

| | Comments (24) |

Thursday's results:
La Habra 21, Westminster 0

The Highlanders' defense continues to dominate while the offense takes a
back seat. Playing efficiently, the program figures to get a boost when
the passing game starts stretching defenses.

La Serna 63, Montclair 14
Don't get too excited about this one, Lancers. Visiting Cavaliers
nowhere near ready to compete at this level. But good players take
advantage of opportunities like this, and Rudy Jordan did just that --
returning two kickoffs 94 and 96 yards, rushing for 115 yards in just
one half plus three plays and finishing with 321 all-purpose yards.

Pioneer 34, Gladstone 0
The 4-0 Titans' defense stepped up to shut down the Gladiators with only
four first downs, and two of them came on penalties. Matt Botello scored
on a 99-yard kickoff return, a 68-yard punt return and caught two
passes, one of them for another score.

California 53, Bassett 0
Condors defense made it easy for offense by allowing the Olympians just
77 yards total offense.

El Rancho 21, Montebello 20
Impressive second half comeback made up for weak first-half performance,
with Marcus Galan's 15-yard run and Doug Soriano's PAT kick with 1:43
left to play making it all worth while. However, playing just half a
game won't get it done in the Del Rio League this season.

La Mirada 28, Paramount 7
After being shut out in their first two games, the Matadores find it's
easier and a lot more fun when they score some points. This time, Devon
Tracy's 201 yards and x touchdowns were the catalyst.

St. Paul 34, Cantwell 0
It was a game the Swordsmen were supposed to win, and they did. Could
the score have been higher? Absolutely, had coach Pete Gonzalez not
called off the dogs in the fourth quarter.

Whittier 41, South El Monte 28
The amazing thing here is that SEM found time to score 28 points, what
with Whittier's Jonathan Quezada scoring six touchdowns amid rushing for
184 yards on just 17 carries and adding 62 yards on four receptions, two
of them for TDs, and teammate Daniel Enriquez rushing for 148 yards on
16 trips. Oh ye, Quezada also kicked five PATs. Is the rest of the Del
Rio League paying attention?

Schurr 43, Hacienda Heights Wilson 33
Junior quarterback Ricky Mendez 21 for 27 for 280 yards and four
touchdowns. Thirty-three points seems like a lot for a defense
to give up, but considering the Spartan defenders had to content with
Wilson's super running back, Tim Gilmore, who had 196 yards and four
touchdowns on just nine first-half carries and finished with 228 yards.

Santa Fe 35, Huntington Park 0
The Chiefs looked more like the Chiefs who are the six-time defending del
Rio League champions as they took advantage of field position to score
most of their points and rode a stingy defense that allowed the Spartans
to cross the 50-yard line only once and record just six first downs.

Saturday's game
St. Margaret's 35, Whittier Christian 19

Great first half for the host Heralds; better to forget the second half.
Great effort on both sides of the ball by Aleks Schwerdt wasted.

ALL,

Continue to over look WHITTIER! WHITTIER is one of toughest team in the area next to La Habra. Here are my area rankings anyone want to compare. 1. La habra 2. Santa Fe 3. St. Paul 4. Whittier
5. Pioneer 6. Cal Hi
7. La Mirada 8. El Rancho
9. La Serna. I'd put these top 5 teams up against any team in the area and in the Play Offs with 100% confidence in them to win on any FRIDAY NIGHT! WHITTIER is becoming a sleeping power in the Del Rio and this is the year of the CARDINALS and the begining of a NEW ERA! With an improving upgrade of pre-season quality teams WHITTIER is slowly but surely making a case for SUPREMCY! A game PLAN is what WHITTIER has, and WINNING is what they are doing. GIVE THEM RESPECT WHITTIER DAILY! PUB, PUB, PUB! That's all the DEL RIO LEAGUE NEED'S is PUB!

Respectfully,

Try some Sleepy Time because this is what you'll need after watching mighty Cantwell. Strange how Verbum Dei plays weak opponents during the pre-season. Weren't you guys playing Fountain Valley not too long ago?

Anonymous,#4,Ortega,the All CIF DE is picking up where he left off.Not only on defense, where he already has a handfull of sacks, but also on offense where he starts at TE and filled in at FB.He's caught a few TDs and also rushed for a couple. In this Titan fans eyes, the best is yet to come. Stay posted!

no mas,
why put down Cantwell when they are trying to establish their own identity. Why critisize who they play. They play a weak schedule because they are in a weak division. When your team wins a championship then post your little comment until then, keep your dumb blogs inside your pathetic head.

Ortega is having another good year at DE, he had 4 sacks through the first 3 games and now the Titans are using him alot more on offense as a tight end and fullback

Botello is one of the areas best players, he would be the best running back if Pioneer ran there basic offense or the double tight double wing like they did in previous years. Unlike La Serna, Pioneer has 3 or 4 other guys that can carry the ball, they do not just rely on one back

T-Time, Great to hear PHS is 4-0 I wish I could still go to the games but unfortunately, I moved.
Last year they had an outstanding DE #4 Ortega
How is he playing this year?

T-Time said:

My first comment is about coach Gundy's tirade.I definitely think a coach must protect their players, but Gundy's lack of professionalism to me just put more pressure on his kids.
My next comment pertains to Pioneer High School and its outstanding 4-0 start. All PHS has done is win this season, all you other DRL teams can forget whats happened in the past. PHS not only has Botello, The Palacios Brothers, Ortega, Real, Quinones, but lets not forget Hernandez-whos been playing on one foot for four games, but guess what DRL teams-The first team All League Fullback is healthy! With the O line coming together and an oustanding defense it's T-TIME BABY! Go TITANS 212!

St.Paul needs alot more than their coach not using the Lords name in vain in order to be a winning team, how about giving the returning team members the credit they deserve for last years stats.....sounds to me like the morale of the St.Paul varsity football team is a little low if any....how can you blame them though, they were a great group, unfortunately it seems like their coaches dont feel the same, hence all the new transfers to the team. Regarding The El Rancho Dons, your right, they are going to have to play the whole game the way they played the 2nd half of the game against Montebello....hopefully that win will give the varsity team the confidence they need to step it up a notch and be the outstanding winning team that they all truly are. Rock on Dons......

no mas! said:

There's too much CAN'T in Can'twell. They can't run, block,or pass unless they are playing mighty Salesian,Murphy,or Basset. What have you learned coach Somlin? There's a big difference, you won't get kids wanting to stay at your school if you continue to play a weak schedule.

N-ON-E-MUS said:

Kudos to Coach Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State. You may not like the way he delivered this but listen to his message. To all of those that are criticizing players, coaches or teams-listen to his message. Listen closely! Parents with sons that are playing football understand the emotional 'peaks and valleys' of the season.
Working through Spring and Summer for only 10 games (+ playoffs) and experiencing the disappointment of not being able to play on Friday Night (not even one play)...the coaches lambasting them for miscues...or players blaming themselves for missing a field goal or dropping that one pass....of not getting to start when they felt they deserved it....even in victory they can be demoralized.

To see the criticisms in print is shameful.

Please view Coach Gundy lambasting the writer of a negative article about one of his players.

If anyone can relate to this I challenge you to comment.

To fan_from_afar I think you must be writing from too far away because last year Whittier beat both La Serna and Pioneer the teams being talked about. Also go to Max Preps Whittier rushed for 374 yards against Pioneer 295 against El Rancho 327 against Cal Hi 266 against Cal Hi and 384 against La Serna last year actually outgaining all of them head to head in rushing yards. They also gained more yards in league then in non-league. But hey u were watching from a far. But hey I actually look up the facts on other web-sites.
Whittier was one step away last year. They lost to Cal Hi and to Santa fe in very hard fought games but I would say their losses were more of a reflection on there defense and lack of a passing game. But then again wasn't I talking about running backs not teams. Not to mention Whittier's lack of a passing attack last year had more people in the box trying to stop it then any other team in the league. Take it for what it is I was just saying Whittier running backs deserve just as much credit as any other running back on this blog.

Don't hate on Pioneer because they are ROCKING the field!!!!

yes, jordan is a good running back and so is botello, but look who both of them are running against the competition isn't that great. I guess we'll have to see when they go head to head but the fact of the matter is that both of them are helping there teams win (3-0) and (4-0) respectively. but la serna also relys solely on jordan to carry the team i mean they cant even decide on a QB there whole game is on the groud. Botello for pioneer is only one weapon as they have an established QB who has a passing game so naturally jordan will have more carries and more yards as a result. and for you whittier fans it dont matter what you do in the preseason you could have a million yards its all about league you can erase the yards when league counts thats when it matters... you had all those yards last year and look where it got you not far!!! Don't get offended just listen and wait for league and watch your teams play there is no need to argue over preseason stats!!

I really don't understand all the hoopla. Cantwell's pop-warner team doesn't score against SP. Oh my, what a defeat. No disrepect to Cantwell but was it a well deserved win. Pleasseee. If SP continues to want to play schools that can't give them the competition they need to beable to go the distance they won't have a chance. Don't get me wrong, there is talent on the team. A.H. is one of the most talented running backs around and that's really all the offense they have. They also have two transfer QB's who can throw and run the ball well. (Maybe they're being saved for baseball season) who knows? Don't forget the receivers who haven't been utilized much because they have no QB. Just needed to give an opinion of the ball playing I've been seeing the past couple of weeks. Anyways, may your boys stay healthy and if your coach (guess which one) leaves Gods name out of his cursing, maybe, just maybe the Lord will grant you the wins.

Ruben,

Are you crazy? Matt Botello is an okay running back, but not even close to the level that Rudy Jordan is at. Ask any coach in the DRL League or even in this entire area what player they would want on their team, it's not even close. The Pioneer Head Coach would even pick Rudy Jordan. You can't even compare these two players, Jordan is much faster and smarter and oh did I forget to mention the CIF Ring (and the 3 touchdowns against Santa Fe in the championship), look at Jordan's stats compared to Botello's, get it together and please don't talk non sense on this blog!

Ryan said:

To the Pioneer fans. Matt Botello has not been underrated by this newspaper or this blog. People are constantly talking about him and many pioneer fans are writing that he is by far the best running back in the league. But before giving out the awards let the season finish out. Not to mention Gabrielino-71 Ontario-12 South El Monte-106 and Gladstone-27 are Botello's rushing stats. I don't want to take away from his special teams play and he does catch the ball out of the backfield. But come on he is on pace to rush for about 500 yards. He's a very good football player don't get me wrong but their are solid running backs in hte league apparently you only watch Pioneer games. Rudy Jordan at La Serna is doing an excellent job. Aaron Turner at Santa Fe. Cal Hi has two solid running backs and Whittier has Daniel Enriquez and Johnathon Quezada. Every running back on that list deserves credit. Even anyone has a gripe of being underrated on this thing it's the Whittier running backs they had the best rushing attack in the league a year ago Isaac Garcia 1600+ yards Daniel Enriquez 800+ yards and Keith Rodriguez 800+ yards. This year no one has wrote anything about Johnathan Quezada and all he has done is rush for 399 yards and nine touchdowns 117 and two touchdowns receiving and kick 11 extra-points. But before this post by Murray was never mentioned once.

Ruben said:

Pioneer is for real. They have one of the best running backs in Botello, and QB Ronnie Palacios is very good. I think they have an excellent chance to win the Del Rio League. Everyone is talking about Rudy Jordan, but start watching out for Matt Botello, this guy is for real. Go Pioneer!!!

LOL WHAT DID I SAY I NOT A ST. PAUL FAN....BUT THEY DID WHAT I SAID THEY WOULD DO.....MY BOYS FROM SCHURR DID THERE THING THATS HOW DEFENDING CIF CHAMPS PLAY.....

El Rancho said:

You are 100% correct, playing 1 good half of football is not going to cut it from here on out for the dons. Lets just say ER's next 7 games are going to be brutal and we cannot afford to play only one half of football like we have done these past 3 games.

Arroyo
St Paul
Santa Fe
La Serna
Whittier
Pioneer
Cal Hi

Brutal from here on out, better pick it up Dons.
