Bye Weeks:
Montebello, Pioneer
I think La Serna is going to plow through lowly El Monte tonight while Murray believes the games will be close for a half. With the exception of Rosemead, the Mission Valley League has been very disappointing this year.
Roger's upset pick of the week is Santa Fe. My pick is Schurr on the road.

I was wondering how does an athlete become a "Player of the Week" in the Whittier Daily News. Cal Hi varsity volleyball team is undefeated with 2 more league games to play and not one of them have been a Player of the Week yet. Chanelle Puou is always or most of the time with top kills and blocks in a game. Marissa Rangel and Kelsey Stehle are also high in kills. I noticed that the El Rancho player, Bahr was player of the week after we beat them. I'm just wondering what does it take?
HS Football Fan let's not talk about other coaches, because if it wasn't for that coach at Pioneer my life would have been different. But now to the Point.
ALL TEAMS BEWARE! THERE ARE NO MORE HOMECOMING GAMES FOR WHITTIER. Pick WHITTEIER for H/C and watch what will happen. That coaching staff at WHITTIER has brought that school back to the promise land. WHITTIER has risen from the valley of the dead and are now ready to make a statement on the league AGAIN! WHITTIER has had great coaches starting from Vic Lopez,Zeller, and Mike Fitch. Coach Scott has paid the price of down seasons and now the turn around of this program is becoming a reality. All need to remember this "Any coach can can be successful when times are good but can a coach still be enthused and stick around when times are hard. Coach Scott and one of his assistance where there at WHITTIER when times where GREAT. You could not of kicked us around in the day's of Iron Mike Fitch. Coach Scott took over and had some down years, but now that the program actually is making a change for the better, WHITTIER is a fluke. Some of the Coaches out there got there first coaching job at WHITTIER under Coach Mike Fitch, and Coach Walter Scott. So just to say this last statement and I'm out. WHITTIER always and will still continue to play anyone out there who wants a GAME, we can't relive the past but always no WHITTIER HIGH is the name sake of the city and we CARDINALS have PRIDE Win or Loose. Roger Murrary would you go do research on the Old WHITMONT League and the Del Rio League(93) and push out through the Media that we have good football being played in the area by all school's so that some of the bigger name schools or Leagues give us a shot to compete with them.

The object of the game is execution at the line of scrimmage. EXECUTE,EXECUTE EXECUTE.Great job St Paul coaching staff !!!!!!!!
We played a pretty good first half and then played a not so good second half. No excuses here, st paul is just a better team, anyone who thinks otherwise is just in denial. IMO this pre season schedule was pretty dam tough and we should be well prepared for league play, no love from anyone but thats ok, were coming.
El Rancho's program has greatly improved compared to the last couple of years and thier pre-season was a good way to prepare for league play. Give this coaching staff 1-2 years and they will be the annual playoff team they were in the past.
St Paul has improved since game 1 but league will be tough but they had a very successful pre-season.
But it's good to see these two teams play again, hope its an annual game....now
lets enjoy some great league games and then the playoffs.
why did El Rancho send in their JV team? what? it was their varsity team? wow, they looked horrible. And if you are happy that you played "lights out" for a quarter and a half, that's the reason you don't win much.

I never said I don't like Pioneer. Just give a team that beat you some credit and don't make excuses. Good luck to Pioneer this week.
Anonymous,
When you say "we" all should know that ER can play with St. Paul you just meant "you" right?
Because I'll give ER by taking this game versus St. Paul, but they honestly dont even belong on the same practice field let alone under the lights on a friday.
If they gave a tie for quarter and a half you would have gotten that tie but sucks for you that football last 4 quarters, maybe SP should play an area team next year that plays 4 quarters and not a quarter and a half.
Winning football teams execute and take advantage of turnovers. St. Paul gave you the football on the first drive so don't make excuses about you turning the ball over bc so did SP.
Good Luck in league this year, maybe SP taught you that it takes 4 quarters to win and hopefully you do win a league game this year.
AND.....NO ER CANNOT PLAY WITH ST. PAUL, but you have for sure got some respect for actually being an area team that would take on SP...I would actually like to see "better quality" area programs like Santa Fe, Cal, La Habra, or La Serna take on SP sometime and see what happens, not ER or a down La Mirada team
Well it amazing that after a few weeks St. Paul's is 4-1 playing competitively with school and not against 5A school like Servite.St. Paul's is still playing way outside its size with less than 400 boys but MA taught spirit and guts.PG is teaching the same spirit. I like to commemt about St. Paul"s Hall of Fame.Their is no representation for the FIRST Parochial League in 1959. We had a FIRST TEAM all League tackle and kicker,MVP,and ATHLETE of the Year for Football,Basketball and Baseball.GREAT credentials for 1959.The spirit was created with the FIRST team.
Santa Fe 13, Downey 11.
Chiefs comeback from 8-0 first quarter deficit and down 8-6 after QB Dameron Fooks scrambled 20 yards for TD with 15 seconds left in first half.
Wow Big Red you don't like Pioneer. Well will see what happens in two weeks. Whats keepping Whittier in their games is their offense. Whittier defense needs a little work if they want to win league. Coach Scott your doing a great job keep it up. And remeber Big Red that was last year, start thinking about this year.
First of all hsfootballfan, no one at ER teaches that or would ever live by that, just stfu.
Now for my take on the ER vs St Paul game, im not going to make any excuses about losing and im not going to say hey at least we played with heart and only lost 35-0, we all know dam well ER can play with St Paul, our defense was playing lights out for a quarter and a half, then we shot ourselves in the foot with a fumble inside our 20. Then with about a minute left in the half we give up a long pass to the 7 yard line and then the score. The game should have been 0-0 at halftime but it seems like ER just doesnt want to step it up and make it happen. St Paul is a better team than us we knew that coming in, they just outplayed us and executed, we didnt. The good thing is we are now 0-0 and its time for league, I think our preseason schedule was pretty strong, and we should be ready to go for league.
Wow, phone call from mayfair
la mirada 7
mayfair 33
wow, la mirada is 1-4, can it get any worse, and does anyone know the last time they were 1-4 in a season?
thanks
again with the "preseason" postings? get it through your heads. These games count. typical del rio leaguers; knowing they aren't going for State so they settle for just league. How pathetic.
La Serna already won
St. Paul over El Rancho, but remember what they teach at ER if they only lose by 21 its a moral victory LOL!!
Santa Fe over Downey, both teams are havong a toguh pre-season but I expect the Santa Fe to get the W and get ready for a tough DRL season bc its wide open this year its not Santa Fe and everyone fighting for second like it usually is...
Cal Hi over Buena Park, this might be a chance to see some of the Cal young guys bc the starters shouldnt play more than 3 quarters this game will be over at half
Whittier has so far proven to be for real, we'll see if they can avenge this loss from last year, I got the Cardinals in a close one
La Habra over Brea Olinda, hopefully they do not look past this team bc they got Troy next week.
Leuzinger over Schurr, Schurr I think is overrated this year, they are a solid team but a different team from last year.
Cantwell over Bosco
Mayfair over a STRUGGLING La Mirada squad
Unfinished business
Great Article. Iam a Whittier folk and I DO NOT think it was a fluke last year. I also think that Whittier Christian's followers do not think that this one game validated there program. I think it was the whole season.
Great job by Coach Scott saying his team got out-coach and out-played last year no excuses. Not like the head coach of Pioneer who said 4 fumbles were the reason they lost last week, but forgot to mention the 3 fumbles cypress had. Or that they could have beaten Whittier last year, but this excuse and that excuse is y they did not Whittier was in control of the game all night long. It's going to be one heck of a game tonight. Good luck to all the DRL teams tonight.
you have to have sportsmanship whether you win or lose. parents need to teach kids that and enforce it. coaches you need to instill that in your players or get off the field - its not right what you teach them. congradulate all players on a team for a great game dont single certain transfers on a job well done because it takes a team effort for that individual to make plays! they cant make it without the team!! let everyone play at freshman and j.v. levels ... it is supposed to be learning levels. coaches need to OPEN your eyes on everyone at those levels and give them all a chance to show you what they got!! they cant learn if you dont play them. let them have fun and let them be kids and let them all have there day!! come on coaches .... what the heck are you thinking. THEY ARE A TEAM, a unit, a squad treat them all fare and give them all a chance to show you up -- not just a few.
schurr wins 21-14
whittier wins 38-7
downey wins 28-7
la habra wins 34-21
they score points but there defense gives up points...
st.paul wins 40-0 tell the coaches to play teams that make them better....
