All-Area is just around the corner
There is still a week to go before the high school football season ends, but it's time to start thinking about All-Area selections.
Am interested in comments concerning potential candidates, but please keep in mind the interest is more curiosity than it is seeking help.
Of participating, please include some evidence (heart strings don't count) to back up your opinion.
Please keep it short, to the point, and as free as possible of rants and raves.
The offensive team is made up of 13 players - QB, RB (2), WR (2), O-line (5), TE, Util, PK.
The defensive team is made up of 12 players - D-line (4), LB (4), DB (3), P.
Pick an entire team, or just individuals.
In either case, please be brief.

Madrid deserved 1st team all area WR, its a shame he broke his collar bone after catching the game winning td over Drew Harris in week 10, with him healthy ER could have likely advanced to the semis.
the all-area selection this year was CRAP! St. Pauls whole offensive line should have got it. Lead by 55, they dominated their opponets in the playoffs. and i believe just about every single one of their lineman was beat up thru the playoffs. that sows how much they wanted it. without them, who knows where SP would have been. congrats 55, 52, 60, 63,& 71!!!
Looking at Maxpreps stats over the top players in our area:
Drew Harris (Cal) is ranked #9 in the state for interceptions and #47 (although he has the same or better stats than the players through #37) in the nation on interceptions. All Area and All CIF DB--for sure
Nick Alvaraz (LS) is #53 in the state for tackles. All Area and All CIF LB--for sure
Jonathan Quezada (Whittier) is #55 in state for scoring. Great effort on losing team--should be beat out by Aubrey Haynes (SP) and Jason Davis (LH) for RB
Eric Stern (Cal) is # 13 in state for field goals. All Area-strong possibility
Abraham Torres (LS) is #77 in state for field goals--not this year or any year with Stern in the running
Morris Keselloff (LS) is #17 in state for punting--if it is between kickers, gotta go with Stern, but this guy has a leg.
Congratulations to all--looking forward to All Area and All CIF lists!!
PS--This did include all Del Rio league schools and La Habra, who turn their stats into Maxpreps.com
Dear Roger Murray,
hasn't the wdn "all-area team" of recent included a 1st & 2nd squad? You should up the number of players per position.
St. Paul is ranked #1 in the Whittier area by Cal Hi Sports as the 2007 CIF SS Division III Champs and La Habra is #2 as CIF SS Division VII Champs. Both team's players should be well represented of the individual honors.
Andrew Campa knows, he attended some SP games.
"THE ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP HAD TO GO THRU ST. PAUL'S D "
"ST. PAUL'S O RAN THRU THE CONFERENCE TO ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP"
Cal parent?? Can't believe you would be making a statement like that? Wasn't it Cal high who had a transfer that changed their season around last year? Hypocrite!
when are these teams announced?
Cal Parent,
Have you been to any St. Paul game this year?? The DEFENSE carried this team. Granted Aubrey Haynes is a great back but SP was still contender bc of their defense.
And why are bitter about transfers, bc if remember correctly Nick Grigsby was a SP transfer at Cal last year and HE WAS YOUR WHOLE TEAMS OFFENSE last year...so...stop your whining and be happy for a Whittier area team getting the job done.
CONGRATS SP!!
Hey Cal Parent,
That is the garbage people think that without Haynes we would have not won a title. Garcia would have done an excellent job, and besides it was the defense that won St. Paul the tilte.
Cal parent "anonymous",
how many SP games did you actually go to the past two seasons? None, so you wouldn't really know that having Aubrey Haynes as a SP back was great for not only the school but for him too. Looks like you forgot Luis "Sonic" Garcia, Eddie De Dios, Garrett Modlin and Deion William among others who carried the ball for SPHS and a few others that could also do well behind the pound for pound strongest and best OL & TE's in the area.
Cal Parent,
Your right Aubrey is a transfer and he doesnt live near the school , st.paul is a privet school students come from all over ths place.. Aubrey was a big reason for St.Paul winning CIF , but lets not forget we made it to the semi's last year without him or a Nick Grigsby , you should know that name since your a Cal parent , so lets not go there with transfer thing.
gotta give it up to Aubrey haynes and David Flores. Without them St. Paul wouldn't have even made the playoffs. Haynes touchdown vs. St Francis with 5 min left in the game sealed the title run for St. Paul. And Flores was all over the place, even though #21 broke his ankles in the fourth quarter. As a Golden Knight i gotta give them their props. Congrats to St. Paul, damn it hurts to say that!!
Cal Parent,
Have you even seen St. Paul play?? Granted Aubrey is a great player, but SP was a defensive team, THEY WIN GAMES ON DEFENSE...WE TALK ABOUT SP BECAUSE OF THEIR DEFENSE!!!
Dont be bitter that your beloved Cal team blew it and got shut out in the semis and that next year you are not likely win league let alone make the playoffs.
GO SP!! WESTERN DIVISION CHAMPS!!
without aubrey haynes....we would not even be talking about st. paul, championship or not...and he is a transfer, where does he live????not near the school probably.
Cal parent
All league, All CIF SS, All area? The most important honor or goal for any football player is Champion. League Titles are good but another CIF Championship Title speaks for itself especially for the highest ranking division team that just missed representing their division for a state title. That is where the WDN or coaches should pick 1st and often. Cut the politics out and St. Paul is heavily represented. Try running with the best.
Frank Chavez of Whittier Christian High School, 15 solo tackles, 17 assists. Four year starter, two year team captain, 2nd team all area Soph, junior year. This lineman played both ways his soph-senior year, and is one of the key players for the offense and defense Whittier Christian HS team.
when does the all area selections come out???
SANTA FE PPL I FEE SHOULD BE MENTIONED IN ALL AREA.
DB-KEITH GAINES AND CHRIS CASTRO. GAINES WAS GREAT AND CASTRO DID ALL HE COULD DO EVEN THOUGH MISSING A LOT OF GAMES...
DL/DE CROUCH AND B-ROD.
WE RUN A 5-2 WITH STAND UP D-ENDS AND THEY DID A GREAT JOB THIS YEAR.
LB- FLORES LEAVING TO ST PAUL (#32) LEFT A HUGE VOID AT LB BUT QUEZADA
FILLED IN QUITE NICELY.
OL- GARBAGE THIS YEAR AT CENTER AND TACKLE BUT GUARDS EFRIN & NICO DID GREAT TO PROTECT OUR ROTATING QB'S
RB-TURNER W/OUT A DOUBT WAS A CATALYST FOR THE TEAM THIS YEAR. HE HAD AMAZING NUMBERS WITH A HORRIBLE LINE...AND BY THE WAY... HE IS GETTIN SCOUTED BY USC...(ONLY AN JR)
TE-GAMBOA. PERFECT STRUCTURE FOR A COLLEGE AND PRO TE
angel villasenor from whittier high did big this year. Playing 0-line and line backer as he had a breakout season. In one single game he had 16 tacles and he continued to be a factor for whittier in many of its games. He later came to fill in the center spot which he had never played in his life and was the leader of the line and also got all league for a position that he had never even played before in his life.
since st. paul runs a two tight end set i give my votes to their tight ends # 24 Ernesto Leon and #15 Gary Rubalcaba
fullerton supporter: When you say overrated you must be talking about fullerton
football.
Aaron gamboa #87 santa fe high school
Anonymous:: Don't get your feelings hurt, just watch the films from THAT GAME... Yeah. we don't have a ring but we have a shot at it!! by now #60 is probably in Basketball.
p.s
can you say overrated???
LM's Matt Rush for all area TE
Bud Coit OL
Jack Francis DL
John Cullen OL
I don't know what game the fullerton supporter was watching, but, one thing I know for sure #60 has something that the Fullerton football team will not have, a CIF Championship and a ring.
#60 from SHS got beat on just about every play in the semi's. Watch the film, You must be a family member!!! Against us their best linemen was the smallest guy on the field.#76 i believe.
Here's my vote for #34,Hernandez, from Pioneer.42 rushes- 223yds,5.3 avg. 2 TD"s,30 catches{lead league]-329 yds.,10.9 avg. 3 TD's,2 for 2 passing-164 yds, 2 TD's, 51 tackles, 2 sacks, 1 int. All that despite playing on a badly sprained ankle for the first 5 games!
Frank Chavez of Whittier Christian should be on the All Area 1st team. He has been a second team All Area pick his soph. and junior year, and now is his time to move up to 1st team. Frank had an another outstanding year as a offensive and defensive linemen. Jack Morgan the teams fullback went down with a ACL tear, Frank stepped in and rushed for 83 yrs, 8 carries, and 1 touchdown. As well as doing a fine job blocking for his backs. This four year varsity starter is well deserving of this All Area honor.
Joe,
Hillman from La Habra should get 1st team all-purpose. Botello might get 2nd team
Matt Botello should get 1st team for all purpose, he had over 1800 total yards and 15 TDs
"OBSERVER", THE CANTWELL SAFETY WAS NOT 'TANKED' BY #34, HE GAVE THE HIT AND HURT HIS SHOULDER, AS HE WAS THE ONLY CANTWELL PLAYER NOT AFRAID OF OUR SIZE. I HEARD SOME CANTWELL PLAYERS QUIT THE TEAM BEFORE AND AFTER PLAYING US, BECAUSE PARENTS WERE UPSET THAT THE COACH SCHEDULED A GAME AGAINST US. I GIVE CREDIT WHERE ITS DUE AND ITS OBVIOUS YOU DONT, AS THE PLAYER YOU MENTIONED, DIDNT MAKE A TACKLE THE ENTIRE GAME....I AM FOR ST. PAUL, BUT CANTWELL HAS TALENT, SOFT OR NOT!
WDN,
when does the all-area team come out???
i know the area has seen somewhat of an increase in talent this year. however you'll have to show me alot to change my view and prove that there are better in these positions:
RB -#23 AUBERY HAYNES. do i even have to start? he is flying under the radar as of now with colleges. the school that gets him will be lucky.
DL- #33 RYAN ROSENTHAL- always under- sized in every game. tuff nosed kid with a nose for the ball. 2nd on team with sacks.
DL-#10 VINNY MARSHALL- a true pass rusher. leads the team in sacks again this year. stepped up big in the playoffs. put tremendous pressure vs culver citys QB and had 2 sacks vs gahr. back to back 10+ sack seasons speak voulume
LB's- #32 FLORES/#25 CORDOVA- they beast every game. and are always around the ball.
the 2 whittier running backs:
1. daniel enriquez (rb) 1200+ yards. 1st team all league.
2. jonathan quesada (utl) led the area in total points, something like 140.
raul pintado #26, alex valdez #11 michael olivares #45 ruben almonte #95
Cantwell deserves some recognition....The WR/FS Jeffrey Taylor Jr. started as a freshman, 2year first team all-leaguer and this years Camino Real league MVP. being recruited by every Pac 10 school. H e played the hardest against us and I saw him handle LaSalle by himself. The officials cost them the league championship. Aubrey thought very highly of his play, even though cantwell did not score against us.
Offense
QB-Chris Morales, La Habra
RB-Aubrey Haynes, St. Paul
RB-Jason Davis, La Habra
WR-Peter Puga, La Habra
WR-Aleks Schwerdt, Whittier Christian
TE-Ralf Weissenberger, Cantwell
OL-I couldn't name all the guy in the trenches, but it should include guys from La Habra, Cal, and St. Paul
Defense
DL-Ryan Rosenthal, St. Paul
DL-Vinny Marshall, St. Paul
DL-Abel Ramirez, La Serna
DL-Pepe Quinonez, Pioneer
LB-David Flores, St. Paul
LB-Nick Alvarez, LS
LB-Daniel Cordova, St.Paul
LB-Albert Hernandez, St. Paul
DB-Keith Gaines, Santa Fe
DB-Matt Lopez, St. Paul
i have been to a couple of the area teams game and i know that i have seen the talent and the and the area team at st. paul high school. Theres not one team in the area that has played agaisnt the tough teams that they have played. Lets not forget that st. paul is division 3 and the area teams are 7 and some even worse... so you should really think about how good have the kids played and agaisnt who have they played. Yeah you can play on the DRL or freeway league and have good stats but who have you played agaisnt. Little teams that arent even known anywhere. Thats almost the same thing as playing some no good pop warner team. Why dont you line up agaisnt st. paul and see how really good of an all area player are you. St. Paul has been stopping kids that are more than just all area, they have been stopping all cif players and some who are being recruited by big collges like USC, Oregon, UCLA and more. I see you guys nominate the kid from Cantwell the T.E. What happend to him when he played agaisnt saint paul. What happend to him then. He didnt do one thing and from what i know all these so called letters arent even for T.E i believe they are for punter. I just think people should think of who the kids are going up agaisnt and how they do agaisnt them.
La Habra's defense has been spectacular all year long. I think that they now have the top scoring defense in the Southeast Division. Some of La Habra's top defenders are:
DE #43 Aaron Novikoff
DT #93 Stephan Shelton
LB #47 Ryan Tornell
SS # 3 David Arteaga
CB #26 Nick Sedaka
LB Joe Casey
After watching them Shut-out Cal-Hi this last Saturday night they deserve to be considered for all area status.
Man you guys have obviously not been watching la habra. Its obvious that many players on the offense for la habra deserve all area. But the defense is just jaw dropping. We will start on the defensive front. Aaron Novikoff #43 and Jake Peppard #9 have been playing amazing this whole year. No one and I mean no one has ran on them or was able to pass on them, ask san gabriel, cal high, oceanview, or anyone else. THey have had many sacks, interceptions for touchdowns, and many tackles and forced fumbles. Now for the linebackers- Ryan Tornell #47 and Joe Casey #8 have been playing great. THey are averaging double digit tackles each game and have qb sacks to go with it. And for the the dbacks is Nicholas Sedaka #26 who has had I think about 7 or 8 interceptions this year, three in one game against westminster. These kids are flat out amazing. Have fun playing against them Fullerton, it will be a good game.
you guys need to give love to the schurr players.
raul pintado db-last year first team all area, this year was league defense mvp.
alex valdez wr/p
had around 800yds receiving on 44 catches.
average nearly 45 yds a punt.
erick estrada lb
big part of the schurr high defence which was really good.
just some of the names that should be on the al area list
Roger,
This was an exciting year for High School Football in the Whittier, La Habra, Pico, Santa Fe Springs area. With having St. Paul and La Habra in the finals is good even though I am a Whittier Alumni! The talent level has risen in the area and it seems extremly hardto recognize all the student athletes for there accomplishments on and off the field. I know you have a 1sr and second team All Area but do you have the following stand out awards. 1. Area Offensive MVP
2. Area Offensive Lineman of the Year
3. Area Offensive Back of the Year
4. Area Defensive MVP
5. Area Defensive Lineman of the Year
6. Area Defensive Back of the Year
7. Area LB of the Year
8. Kicker of the Year
9. Special Teams Player KR/PR/ATH of the Year
Coaches need to be rewarded to.
10.Offensive Coordinator of the Year
10.defensive Coordinator of the Year
11. Special Teams Coach of the Year
Maybe not now but in the future would it be possible to have an ALL Area Awards Banquet held here in Whittier. I remember when the All Los Angeles Times team was selected there was a nice banquet for the players. I think if we area fan lovers and sports writers can do something like this in the Area we will attract more good athletic kids to this side of town and we will keep all of our local kids at there schools and not going to Private schools in other areas like the O.C.! We just keep our private school children here at St. Paul, Whittier Christian, or Cantwell for those parents who prefer private school for there kids. Are public schools would still have kids to choose from and and proably would have bigger programs if we could just keep Whittier kids in there schools and not other school. something has to be done to show that we care about football in this area. I Grew up here in this area and there is a rich traditional football spirit and a lot of football history in the Whittier Area. I know that with an ideal like this with coaches support, administrators and, alumnist it would work. When I went to school yah we rival schools hated eachother on the field but off the field those guys where our friends, we all went to eachother high school parties and last but not leastI'll always remember myself and Sean McKenny(St. Paul) after every game St. Paul, Whittier, Santa Fe, La Serna, Cal-Hi, Pioneer and maybe Whittier Christian football players would all meet up at In-N out in Santa Fe Springs and just hang out and talk. I have a daughter who proably will be going to St. Paul and I want here to enjoy her High School years and what a better city to experience that in which is WHITTIER! Last but not least matbe you would have an award for the area Team has the highest GPA average for the team. This could be something that show the kids that with outthe grades sports is obsolete. For some of you parent's he read this Blog and coaches how do you feel about this would you all support this. I'm an Active Duty Service member in the U.S. Navy and at this time I am away but I do keep up with are football via the internet. I'm not rich but if anyone would like to do something like this or think some of these things are good then Blog it to Roger and maybe we can get something going. For you Roger, would you look at some of those All area topics. Coaches deserve awards to even though most coaches don't coach for the money! they coach for love of the game! There should be a Mayors cup for the city of Whittier schools!
DeVaughn Egans "92
Ralf Weisenbergger? Cantwell? Who cares....
I saw Rolf weisenberger play against SP,he's a big boy but he was not impressive. SP manhandled him Im sure there is a more deserving TE he played better competition.
WCHS:
Forgot Phil Hughes. Played little more than half the games at QB. Also outstanding as a part-time receiver and linebacker. 100+ QB rating while starting at the other positions.
THE ENTIRE ST.PAUL DEFENSE!! THEY HAVE BEEN PLAYING LIGHTS OUT DEFENSE!!
the entire st paul team...
Coach of the Year
Mazzota- LH 12-0 and the likey Southeast Division champ
Offense
QB-Chris Morales, La Habra
RB-Aubrey Haynes, St. Paul
RB-Jason Davis, La Habra
WR-Peter Puga, La Habra
WR-Aleks Schwerdt, Whittier Christian
TE-Ralf Weissenberger, Cantwell
OL-I couldn't name all the guy in the trenches, but it should include guys from La Habra, Cal, and St. Paul
Defense
DL-Ryan Rosenthal, St. Paul
DL-Vinny Marshall, St. Paul
DL-Abel Ramirez, La Serna
DL-Pepe Quinonez, Pioneer
LB-David Flores, St. Paul
LB-Nick Alvarez, LS
LB-Gerardo Avila, Cal
LB-Akbert Hernandez, St. Paul
DB-Keith Gaines, Santa Fe
DB-Matt Lopez, St. Paul
DB-Drew Harris, Cal
Michael Krause #60 OL from Schurr. Anyone who can take a charging 280 lb+ Defensive lineman and single handily slam him into the mud after an interception like he did with Fullerton needs to be a pick.
I have been to many area games this year.mostly cal hi(my alma mater) and saint paul games.theirs a lot of piks to consider but albert hernandez, daniel cordova, and david flores are my top 3 linebackers..all impact players.drew harris is also a good pick for a db.
QB is up in the air, no real exciting besides morales at LH
All three of St. Paul's Linebackers should DEFINETLY be first teamers, remember, there may be kids on losing teams with 100+ tackles, but its onl because their defense is always on the field due to their inability to hold the ball on offense (El Rancho, Pioneer,La Mirada,Cantwell, etc..)
OL, give it to the guards over at CAL, without them this season would be for not, and also at La Serna because Rudy Jordan wouldnt have much without them either, dominant most of the season. The rest of the lineman spots have to go split @ LH and St. Paul, those offenses had big games and good backs all season.
The obvious choices for WR are at La Habra, with 2 players with over 600 yds receiving, thats simply amazing.
Also, RB of the year unanimous- Aubrey Haynes, St. Paul, no questions asked...if you read the paper or were at either of the last 2 playoff games, you know why..
urquiza and meza are both all-area quality rushers, especially when you look at their ypc avgs and that they essentially carried calhi to the semi's. shelgren and avila from the linebacking corps also deserve recognition, especially shelgren in his overall leadership of the best defense in DRL, and one of the tops in the area. harris would be questionable in the secondary. stat wise hes a great player, not so much when it comes to character. quarterbacking id give to ben burke or morales (lh). puga and stern will/should get it for their kicking efforts. chris burns (chs) is also a great candidate. a very cerebral player and a hard worker.
The entire La Habra team for obvious reasons. Just check the scores of the playoff games.
Daniel Enriquez rb Whittier.
Abel Ramirez from La Serna deserves all area.
The kid plays solid D-line and recorded 96 tackles this season along with a couple sacks.
This guys a stud!
saint pauls linebakers are a definite pick.hard nose linebackers,32,25,51...also rush and francis from lm at there fb and te spots
QB-Daniel Morales
RB- Jason Davis
RB- Aubrey Haynes
WR- Pete Puga
WR- Ray Madrid
TE- Chris Alvarez
UTL- Ronnie Hillman
OL- Justin Richardson
OL- Joe Cannon
OL- DJ Krattenmaker
OL- John Cullen
OL- James Cervantes
DL- Vinnie Marshall
DL- Ryan Rosenthal
DL- Abel Ramirez
DL- Victor Rojas
LB- Nick Alvarez
LB- David Flores
LB- Gerardo Avila
LB- Joe Dankert
DB- Ryan Stiger
DB- Drew Harris
DB- Matt Lopez
WCHS:
1. Frank Chavez - OT
Similar statistics to Livengood (see below).
2. Sean Livengood - OT
No sacks allowed this year, no holding calls (five penalty yards in line related play), holes wide enough to drive large vehicles through (8+ knockdowns, 8+ mauls, and always downfield blocking per GAME). Played center position in quarterfinal playoff game as if he had been playing it all season. All done with what was probably a hairline broken left ankle (resultant from a severe syndesmosis - high ankle sprain) that occurred the day before the first game of the season and a grade 1++ shoulder separation from fifth game thru remainder of season. Livengood and Chavez OL play largely responsible for ~9,000 yards of offense over last two years.
3. Sean Livengood - P
Averaged 38.2 yards a punt on 16 punts (only 16 punts because his offensive line play kept WCHS out of punting position much of the season, similar to last year). Again this was done with a possibly broken left ankle (plant foot) and a moderate right ankle sprain (first half of season). 39 yards/punt average over two seasons (36 punts, two touchbacks, and ONE BLOCKED). Had punts that traveled 60+ yards in the air with ~ a 5 second hangtime.
4. Mark Edwards, RB/SB
~1000 yards rushing on 7 games. ~500 yard receiving on season. 86 points scored.
5. Aleks Schwerdt, RB/WR
~900 yards rushing on season. ~600 yards receiving on season. 1000 yards total offense through first four games. Sat out several games due to a dislocated shoulder. Scored 112 points.
6. Halim Khoury, LB
One of the top three linebackers in the division. ~110 tackles (103 going into the last game of the season, #12) over season.
elrancho,
none of your picks will be on the first team all-area...LH has better receivers, SP has better linebackers, and Cal has better linemen, maybe those guys migth get honorable mention but they are not gettin 1st or 2nd team!!!
Ralf Weissenberger, Cantwell TE. Anyone have more recruiting letters in the area?
let us not forget about those players from La Serna. this year's team was a tough nose, grind team. Alvarez-LB, Jordan-RB/S, Cannon-ol,Rodriguez-C, Ramirez-DL. good team that had some impact players out.
Geeze....just give the entire St. Paul defense All-Area, its as easy as that.SP Defensive linemen #33 Rosenthal(also top 3 in tackles on the team) and #10 Marshall are very deserving, i believe they both have 10 sacks each this year also all three linebackers should be considered #32 #51 #25
Aubrey Haynes, Aubrey Haynes, Aubrey Haynes.
Ray Madrid - WR
Albert Toscano - LB
Garret Carrillo - OL
