To Hank I remember losing to St.Pauls there in 1994 but why did they cancell to come over in 1995 to play here? To Anonymous on state ranks its alright-but not the cheap crap about beating little Chihuahuas up. You must be the next Mike Vick and all. I checked that Garfield ended up number 11 in the city but try playing numbers 10 to 1 if you are too good for us and call them D11 or D10 to there face you fools who pick any whittier team over us. I bet your school's team never played or ever wants to play Gafield so now go ask your coach to see if he will play the defending City 3A champ Bulldogs or th 4A champ Birmingham. Dawgs out.

Some modern day racism and hatred still exist from somebody jealous of Garfield High School's Champion team. I wonder if the persons writing such juvenile remarks would be persistant enough to have their school schedule Roosevelt, Narbonne, Fairfax or L.A. University High now that both of their D1 bound backs are moving on if your too good to play us. These are the schools GHS beat in the playoffs to earn a City Invitational title that was called The 3A Title until a fews years ago. Sorry just public schools with high enrollments like yours unless you are St. Paul which I don't believe would make such comments. They have played both the Bulldogs and Rough Riders and have mostly Hispanic players from what I hear. Watch what pours from your lips because you are crossing over the wrong fence with those remarks. Or maybe you think that you are all elite six footers weighing 200+ pounds and we grow them small over here. Either way have your school or child's school schedule any teams I just mentioned if you think you can kick on L.A. City instead of Divisions 6 or 7 or 8 or ? whatever. And quit acting like women. Show some pride in colors and anounce your school.

I think that's the last time we played you guys. I would like to see garfield play one of your teams in whittier.My father went to garfield, class of 64. This year I think st Paul played the same nite as garfield last week in the championship. We had to convince my father to go to the st paul game, he really wanted go to the garfield game. We had to tell him your kids went and grandkids go to St paul and one of them is playing. So he decided after 10 minutes to go to our game. Any way good luck to your boys next year. Garfield might be ranked 11th in City CIF but you aren't comparing apples to apples. Yes, there are some good teams in the City section, B-ham and Carson but a lot of the teams couldn't compete and win in the CIF-SS. Look at the statewide rankings and see where your dogs actually rank.

There is alot of emotion that comes with supporting your school in their quest to be the best at a sport you love. Whether its St. Paul bashing or El Rancho bashing, I will be the first to admit its not necessary and is counter-productive. I have several friends and family members that played at St. Paul, as well as strong supporters of the program that I have much affection for. I agree with NFLALUM who once said that we should be supporting all athletes from the area, because we want them to succeed and get to the next level. I would support a tourney that unites the community and gets NFL players from this area involved such as: Adam Snyder, Scott Tercero, Rich Camarillo, Bill Bain, Willits, and others. Alot of these athletes have the talent to play at the next level, and can use their athletic talent to get themselves a free college education. That Im sure we all agree should be the gist of our conversation on this blog. I wish all local teams good luck in their athletic endeavors. Congrats to St. Paul on your title run...

SPHS could have won it all this year with just the returners from last year's team that made it to the semi finals. Last season Morales an All CIF Linebacker from So. El Monte came in for his senior year to play for a Championship. Grigsby left before league and others stepped up in 2006. 16 or 17 of 22 starters returning for this years Championship team spells alot of game experience against some very good teams. Clearly the recent transfers efforts were big but so were those of many others making it a team effort. O and D Coordinators would have still found a way without any one or two players. Remember football takes 11 on each side all game long. What part of this is confusing you?

Oh, I forgot the Archdiocese, maybe along with the Vatican (I hear Pope Benedict is a big St. Paul fan) are the "Friends of the program". Hey, why don't you gather all the other SP haters and hire Senator Mitchell, I hear he's available now. I know, I know, Haynes and Flores won the title for SP; transfers that played all by themselves. Never mind that this team was in the semi-finals last year, never mind that you weren't screaming violations at the beginning of the season when SP lost to Servite, never mind that you didn't care about the SP team when they had to go to St. Francis (I bet the Pope forgot about sending St. Francis a check, maybe next year) just to clinch a playoff berth. I guess Haynes and Flores didn't play those games for you to care enough to call for an investigation. Let's talk about motivation, you didn't care about SP until they were making their championship run, and that run started in the summer with Kids dedicated to improving on last years finish, your two cents comes in now, what's behind your motivation? Check this out, Garfield H. S.'s "Invitation Championship" is the equivelent of a City Section 3A Title. Does your mental capacity rationalize that Birminham is a Div. X, VII, VI, or III type as 4A City Champ that thumped LB Poly CIF SS Div. I Champ this season?
I know St. Paul's played well with some of SS best and might have beaten GHS or RHS this year. Each is better than Cantwell, El Ranchos, La Miranda, any of the area teams or whoever La Habra pre-leagued.

Here's a brain bender for you two: Has any other "area" school of yours
ever played Garfield or Roosevelt besides SPHS? How about any other City Section schools like Bell, South Gate, Jordan, Eagle Rock, Franklin, L.A. Wilson, Carson, Banning, San Pedro, Dorsey, Taft, Sylmar, San Fernando Crenshaw or Venice? Some of those names scare you, huh?
SPHS is likely undefeated vs. GHS & RHS. Encourage your program to play any of them.
Going back, SPHS beat GHS at the "Pit" in 1994. I wonder why SPHS didn't go to GHS in 1995 to face their Southeastern Conference Champion team that included Fremont, Locke, Jefferson, Bell, South Gate, Washington, H.P. and a respectful pre-league. I'm sure the current coaches would honor a two game contract.

Try again barking up this Dawg's leg with your fool ideas trying to pair Whittier schools with SP against East L. A. schools. All that Pop Warner & JAA crap may bite you back. Some Bobcat just might come over to play and put your kid in check as a Swordsman or Highlander.

Are you kidding me, this team was made when the senoirs were freshmen, 13-1, beating teams like LB Poly (DV 1 Champs), OLU (Semi-Finalist in DV 1), Santa Margarita (DV 1 Playoffs), and only losing to ND also D1. Stop giving all the credit to these transfers, instead appreciate the kids that have been dedicated since their freshman year.

I don't understand all of the bashing between the two schools and I find it childish. We all need to understand that these statements that are being made are directed to teenagers and guess what they come on here and read this stuff. Its a shame that schools in the Whittier area have so much animosity towards eachother. Instead of worrying about everyone elses teams we should all worry about our own. If you have nothing positive to say about the others team dont say anything at all. We should all be standing by eachother no matter what. What happened to being good sports and appreciating the achievements of eachothers success. We are all located in a very close radius and should bond together. I challenge the coaches to in the area to host an all Whittier area passing league and lineman competition. What do you guys think? Garfield won the City Invitational which is equivalent to D12 with CIFSS.

I'd take any team in the Whittier area over Garfield.

SP and LH would be playing JV palyers by the 3rd quarter against Garfield.

Highschoolsportsfan, Aldecoa is a student-athlete at El Rancho. Regardless of what he or any other players says about anyone, they should first and foremost be proud to represent the school and community of which they reside. Thats it! There should be no regrets, as there were reasons for the change. I wouldnt want to play for a school for the sole purpose of getting a ring, I would rather play for the school I attend and help them get a ring...thats what matters.

By the way, So now that St. Paul has won the CIF championship, will there be an investigation regarding recruiting violations? Im wondering if the St. Paul faithful would be willing to have an independent investigator review their records to see who is making payments for that all expensive tuition. Are all athletes getting scholarships from the "archdiocese?" Is there a secret "season tickets fund?" or someone other than the parents of the kids making the payment of tuition? Maybe "friends of the program?"

I give props to St. Paul for winning it all. But without transfers, such as Haynes and Flores, this season, St. Paul doesnt get past the 2nd round this year. There was a tremendous influx of transfers this year, around a dozen players at the varsity level alone. Just hope the administration is dotting their "I's" and crossing their "T's" Want to make sure everything is on the up and up...;)

Agreed upon with the potential re-alignment of leagues and conference divisions. True hearted football fans can review the history of CIF Champions in the official program distributed at all recent final games, to see when, at what division level and how many titles schools have and then decide where to step up to. I'd like to have SPHS defend and capture one more CIF Div. III title before making the move back into Div. I Pac-5 formerly 4 A and Big 5 Conference. Either way continued success lies ahead for SWORDSMEN Football.
I believe the St. Paul 2008 non-league has been set with Loyola back, Mater Dei, Servite again, South Hills and two others. Can you confirm tentativly all? Does this mean one more run to defend the repected Mission league and CIF Div. III tiles? Thank you again Coach Pete, Gil, Casey and the reamainder of the hardest working Coaching Staff that sacraficed much for another SPHS Championship.

Ive heard nothing but good things about Coach Jimenez from St. Paul. I hear that the players have alot of respect for him as a coach. Any word if someone will try to nab him for a head coaching gig?

I've heard the same argument from PAC5 schools that Dominguez should be moved to D1. Crespi, Orange Lutheran, Notre Dame and others have moved up after dominating their competition. Dominguez should be moved, especially considering they've got the same enrollment and kids as Compton HS and they play D1.

Roosevelt (10-2) lost 40-3 to St. Paul in 2002. Then Roosevelt (7-5) lost 28-14 to St. Paul in 2003.

El Rancho has two returning lineman for next year. Add to that a projected starter who was ineligble this year, returning, and a sophomore who got significant playing time ready to step up! Once again, there is no depth, and lots of lack of experience given I anticipate about a dozen sophomores on this team next year.

All running backs will be back. No one is going nowhere. All rumors to the contrary are false. You are correct, in that we need a big play receiver...that is a key hole in the offense next year (anyone want to transfer?) Also, the linebackers will be solid, as Collindres returns, and will be much improved, add to that Turner and Sanchez who are ready to contribute and are "big hitters" and lastly with some added weight expect, "Hitman" Harshbarger to move to linebacker next year!

Will be tough, no doubt! But given that no one gave this years team much of a chance and were a field goal away from a league championship, I expect this team to do better...

Lastly, Congrats to Pete Gonzalez and Frank Mazzota, Jr. on your CIF titles and Jim Arnold, with your league title in your first year!

Where do you think they all learned how to win? Its nice seeing former El Rancho coaches doing well...

ummm are you serious, Haynes probably does run a 4.6 and possibly a 4.5, if you have ever been a SP game you would see when he breaks no one catches him from behind. and give credit where credit is due. SP ran through the best teams in the Western Division to capture the crown...Once your beloved Cal team ran into a good team they folded and got shut-out and they couldnt even win the league undefeated...good job

From what I know, no big time RB is leaving El Rancho... you can speculate all you want but our backfield will remain the same. As far as I know Galan and Aldecoa are not going anywhere. Aldecoa had some words about st paul yesterday that are not allowed here. From what I know some of the ER coaches are angry that we are not playing st paul next season.

The JV line was not good, but a big reason for that was the fact that all the good sophomores were up on varsity. 2 sophomores were getting alot of playing time on varsity. Jonathan Montoya started at Center all season, Victor Hernandez didnt start but played a huge role on defense and offense, he was a big reason SF was shut down in OT against ER. Jr Albert Arias also returns, he started most of the season. Eric Zuniga was ineligible but should be a monster next year on both sides of the line. Alot of sophomores from last years freshmen 9-1 DRL champion team did not play football, alot of them should be coming back this year. This years freshmen line was pretty good, they have some pretty good size, they did win a share of the league title, that should mean something.

Yes we do lose Albert Toscano and Thomas LeBrecque at LB, but trust me there will not be a dropoff with Bryan Turner playing LB, that kid is a beast, he will be one of the best middle linebackers in the league. We have Jefferson Colindres coming back at LB and he will only get better after a pretty good season. The other spot will likely go to Adrian Sanchez or Anthony Morones, both kids are pretty good LB's. Perhaps Sophomore Tate Harshbarger will move over to linebacker.

Overall our biggest area of concern is the WR position, luckily we dont pass the ball all that much, someone will emerge though, could be Sanchez, or one of the freshmen kids. Perea has the QB spot on lock, the RB position is set, the linemen will be solid, could be better than this years line. On the defensive side of the ball, the DB spots are set, the LB's will not be a concern. The freshmen team was very good and we should once again get a good amount of sophomores on varsity. We return a good amount of starters and a good amount of kids that played a lot. Its the most returning kids on varsity at ER in a long time. If you want to keep believing that SF is still the king of this league then go ahead, keep doubting the ranch....

Will somebody challenge the Bulldogs of Garfield.They just won their city division title and are up for a challenge. Let's see how their ball control offense and defense stacks up against this side of town?

Agreements are made between H.S.'s to play one, two, or more non-league games. Usually two are common . SPHS vs. ERHS may happen again in the future. LM appearantly won't honor coming to SP in '08 because game films of each other weren't exchanged prior to this seasons 40-7 game.

You're right, SP isn't better than SP, they're just probably better than all area teams that still remain in divisions that are three, four, seven and ten divisions under them. CIF Division III Champions is upper/major division football. CIF league and division conference changes are due to take place soon, so why not jump into SGVL in Div. III with Dominguez and Gahr?

It's interesting how you and I along with many people knew how strong the 2007 CIF SS Div. III Champion SWORDSMEN would be with 17 of 22 starters along with several other impact players returning from last season's semi-finalist Team. Not suprised, we're extremely proud of the Players, Staff and Program's accomplishment of reaching and attaining the final goal in mind of another CIF SS Championship.

Good thing the SPHS Coaches can begin another title hunt with the existing base nucleous of Junior and Sophmore lettermen and starters.
Couple that with what will most likely be the largest influx in recent years of Players transfering to be a part of a rejuvenated Championship Program, and once again strenght of schedule, I like SPHS's chances in 2008.

Sophomore el rancho transfer Jared Morales is going to be a key contributor either on offense or defense for the swordsmen. He was unable to suit up for a single varsity game last season due to complications with his transfer, but dominated the running game at the JV level. He ran against the toughest defense in the area at practice and made great things happen. Since so many key players will be gone next year, it will be great to see how the SP staff molds the upcoming talent. Go Swordsmen!

KING MOE FOE, I'll spot you 20 points and La Habra still wins... Second and Third stringers usually enter midway through 3 quarters of play in most games.. Compare? You can't. Too many starting seniors can only haunt you in the future. No disrespect to your program. Coach Mazzota is succesful because he doesn't look at seniority. He feels that juniors and sophmores can't duplicate on a practice field versus a live contest. So substitution is key. NO two way players with the exception of maybe 1. Enjoy your success in 2008. Be careful what you wish for.. La Habra v. St. Paul? Hmmm

Some of you are discussing transfers from or to St Paul High School. Remember, it costs thousands of doallrs to go to St. Paul High school and many families are going through tough times and simply can't afford the tuition to St. Paul. I know that last season, of the players who left St. Paul, one had to go due to the family not being able to pay the tuition.

It happens and those of you who want to point fingers and criticize them need to stop and think before you comment.

The parents of students who attend St. Paul, in many cases, make a sacrafice to send their kids to a private Catholic school. They are to be commended but than again, all the parents and guardians of student-athletes need to be commended for driving them to and from practice, donating your time to volunteer and lets not forget these are kids.

Finally, I would love to see a St Paul - La Habra game because those are two championship programs.

Congratulations to St. Paul for bringing home another championship. The Swordsmen had probably the toughest route to a title but their coaches had them well prepared and the boys were tough, determined and showed alot of the same desire and guts that the 1981 Swordsmen team had when they won the CIF Title.

As for all the 'experts' already predicting next seasons results.......GET A LIFE!

These kids are 14, 15, 16, 17 years old yet some adults on this site feel they have the right to name them and critique them. Thats not right and simply enjoy their great athletic ability and stop being armchair quarterbacks , especially with these hard working young men.

My son never started his freshmen and sophomore years but before his Junior year he grew 4 inches and added 25 pounds of muscle during summer weight lifting and started for 2 seasons. There are plenty of freshmen and sophomores who will get bigger, stronger and soon they will be winning games for their schools and communities.

Finally, in regards to Palmdale playing at The Pit. Palmdale is A GREAT TEAM AND GREAT PROGRAM. Give them their just due.

The cost to have a night game at a Junior College Stadium or even Gahr high school is in the thousands. Then you have to hire security, portable bleachers (in some cases) and other costs build up. The CIF does not have the funds to give each division a stadium.

Before the playoffs started, in each division, they saw who had home stadiums and they flipped to determine who would host a game if needed.

Palmdale wanted to play elsewhere (and who can blame them) but the CIF ruled against it because of a lack of facilty and cost.

So again, congratulations to the Swordsmen, Coach Gonzalez and his entire staff for a job well done.

St. Paul has some talented 10th and 9th graders that they are working with and are preparing them for next season, I went out on a Wednesday nite and I saw some hard working 10th and 3 freshman- frosh wear a distictive powder blue jersey so they stood out. As for the transfer..many local boys will want to come here..but remember a true swordsman goes the whole distance - which is 4 years of hard work. these transfers just want to be asociated with champions. BELIEVE me these boys will be working hard off season to maintain their title.

Don't count us out next year already. We will be in the thick of the DRL race, I assure you.

We are still stacked at the QB and RB position. There are still some great talent in SPHS lower level, for example #32 LB on J.V. will be a prime fit for Varsity next year, also remember #20 Drake Griffin (RB/LB) and #48 Michael Vega (NG/LB) will fit perfect on defense. I think Coach Gonzalez and Coach Jimenez will find talent in our program to complete for another League title and CIF ring…

St. Paul Swordsmen

It wouldn't of mattered where the game was played. SP completely dominated Palmdale in all facets of the game.

Our boys worked hard for this title and we are proud of them.

All you critics can say what you want about St. Paul, but as far as I'm concerned it is all sour grapes on your part.

Instead of bashing St. Paul why don't you channel that effort into supporting your team?

You have major roles to fill as far as big play receivers and linebackers. Dont be surprised at what big time rbs will be leaving. Not one SP player will be going to ER so stop that. It will be hard pressed to lose any players this season as SP will be gunning for back to back titles next year. I see Santa Fe to be atop the Del Rio league next year once again.

St. Paul loses a ton of starters off of their CIF Championship team. Aldecoa, Galan, and Salerno are probably kicking themselves, especially considering both would have starting jobs next season. Anyone thinking of transferring out of St. Paul right now would be nuts. The whole DL, LB and DB's are gone. OL, TE, and FB are gone on the offensive side. Returners include Paul Lopez (QB), Luis Garcia (RB/DB) along with Deon Williams (RB), Donte Webb (WR/CB), Gabriel Encinas (WR) and defensively won't return a single starter!

It will be very interesting how the Swordsmen will do next year. This year SP had 17 of 22 starters return. This included the whole defense with the addition of Flores at LB. The only quality returner on defense will be Luis Garcia (SONIC) who will be handling the running game on offense next year. Lets see if coach Jimenez is the real deal??? Can he mold a quality D that is now expected at SP with all varsity rookies? On offense they will have 1 returning starter on the line (center), 3 tall strong armed QB's to pick from and 3 year varsity RB Sonic.Receivers Donte Webb along with Gabriel Encinas. Willie Duff got some pt at LB. SP will also have a great kicker in Montecinos. SP has there work cut out next year so we'll see how it goes. As far as Palmdale, they traveled along with CIF to SP the Monday before the game and tried to have the game moved but were ruled against.

LA Preps,

Well ER does have key returners but they are losing O-Line, that is where the game is won and lost, ask Santa Fe, their O-line was not very good but was very young this year with sophmores and juniors, which means they have all returning starters where it matters most, the O-line and D-line.

ER will be very good though next year, but SF is only losing 2 senior starters form this years team. and Pioneer is returning Palacios and Botello.

This years WESTERN DIVISION CHAMP st. paul team was very much senior oriented. I believe 10 of 11 guys on defense were all seniors, and the offense only returns sophmore qb Paul Lopez as a key contributer on offense, but who knows who will start at qb next year with sophmore Chris Willson is rumored to be the better qb and should have started all year.

Big Ups to SP. You fought through all the criticism (mine included) and captured the brass ring.The road to your championship was definitely harder than that final game but you were definitely head and shoulders better than that meatball of a team and believe me it showed.Coach Jimenez again showed his defensive coaching abilities and give alot of credit to that O line, how the hell else would you be able to explain how you have an offensive guard as a tailback (there is no way you can tell me he runs a 4.5 40) but that's another subject.Oh yeah, good job coach G for not blowing it by keeping it simple.So enjoy the offseason you deserve it but keep in mind next year you'll be under the microscope again with us critics wanting to see just how good your coaches are able to put a whole new team together and stay at that same competitve level.CONGRATULATIONS!

The Dons are stacked next year. Lots of key returners. They lose alot of the lineman, but have suitable replacements at the lower levels. Add to that another rumored possible St. Paul transfer, along with other players who did not play this year, and may return, you got to put ER as having a strong chance to win the Del Rio in 2008.

I also heard that they may be trying to schedule Northview. Thats a tough one...Arellanes' history with the school may negate that matchup...will see

Palmdale has a balanced, very athletic offense so the SP defense has to be responsible for both run and pass. Championships are won on Defense. Hopefully SP proves that. They will run the ball effectively and just do what they do.

I think ER got dropped in favor of Pioneer as part of previously stated desire to play more local teams. Also have to take into consideration who will actually play them and what openings are on the schedule. That is how Cantwell and La Mirada ended up on the schedule.

Who knows why SP will not play ER next year??? But they shouldn't be playing a team like Pioneer, the should schedule a better quality programs like La Habra, SF, Schurr, or Cal. Not teams like ER and Pioneer that consider a 5-5 season a successful season. SP will mop up Pioneer by half-time.
