A Schurr Hire

| | Comments (7) |

As was reported last week, Montebello High School alumnus Ben Negrete was named head coach of the Schurr football program, much to the acclaim of several Spartans' backers.

Here's some info listed on Coach Negrete on the Claremont-McKenna Athletics website.

Ben has been with the Stags since 1998. This year he will coach the outside linebackers/safeties and help coordinate the defense. He has been coaching football for 27 years, on both the college and high school levels. He has coached two C.I.F. Championship squads at Schurr High School and Upland High School. Ben is a graduate of Montebello High School and Cal State Los Angeles. He teaches Social Studies and Health at Schurr High School in Montebello.

Here's Roger Murray's Story -

Now it's your turn to place AD? If your school had an opening at the head coaching position, what would you be looking for? What would entice you to chose one coach over another? How important are factors like tradition and experience? Is it preferable to hire someone from within the system or from outside?

I wish Coach Negrete good luck, any word on the La Mirada and H.H. Wilson jobs? Rumors are La Mirada - Muchetti (sorry for the spelling) alumnist, bring back the winning tradition. As for Wislon....things are not as clear!

I have to agree with "big chief" thats just wrong you lost Encinas (thanks Hendry) and you lost the hard hitting Viramontes and with talk of SP trying to get alot of your JV kids over to their programs if we don't do anything for these kids we are going to lose alot of that strong class to SP step up show them respect!! give them what they deserve, and give us the game against SP

PLAY HARD PLAY SAFE everyone have a great off season

I think that Schurr made a great choice in Negrete. Reason why, Local figure that people respect. Second, he has been around football in the Montebello area forever.Third, has grass roots in the school. We wish you good luck in the future.
People before you start to pass judgement on the new coach, give him a chance to succeed.

Well.....if yo are talking about a succesful program I would surly try to hire in house....if the culture of the program would stay in touch and the philosophy that has had success would stay in place why would you want to change everything? But if the program was not successful then I would definitly hire from outside

Hiring Coach Negrete is a great move for the Spartans. He will continue the tradition of a great weight program, the hit drill, and Spartan pride. His team will alwyas be prepared for the opponent. Hopefully Coach Salazar, Ramirez, Jackson, Sanchez, Ramo will stay on staff since they know how to be true loyal Spartans, not like that wanna be Spartan who took his kid to another school but wants to return to play baseball.

I was fortunate enough to play for Coach Negrete during my years at Schurr. He is one of those rare coaches who brings dicipline and tradition to the program, while at the same time keeping the game fun. I wish him all the luck. Go Schurr!

Time to eat some crow!

I have been here in these blogs defending Coach Jack Malhstede many times but today was the ultimate let down. I just spoke with one of the boys that was a member of the 7-2 overall, 4-0 in league (not having played Pioneer due to the fires) LEAGUE CHAMPION Santa Fe JV Football team and he informed that they had their awards luncheon this afternoon. He went on to me that they did not receive shirts for their championship this year and from what he over heard for the coaches that they weren’t going to get shirts according Jack. Are you f’n kidding me!!!! What the heck is wrong with Jack? The year his precious varsity cant win league and he cant even honor his lower levels for their accomplishments. And I say levels because I believe the freshman were co-champions as well. That is just down and out wrong. Those boys played their butt off this year and are SF’s future and that’s how you treat them and your staff. So much for all the talk about it being about the PROGRAM.

No wonder kids are transferring out!!!!

So do the right thing Jack and get the boys their shirts. I’m sure you already had a design at the beginning of the year and wont be that hard to remove VARSITY from it!!!!!!
