Upon Second Review, What About that Schedule?

I was talking to Pioneer coach Ramon Juarez (below) earlier this week when the topic of his team's upcoming nonleague schedule popped up. Juarez, like many others in the Pioneer program, is aware of the criticism of Pioneer's yearly “easy preseason.”
So in 2008, the Titans will take on such opponents as St. Paul (Western Division Champ), Cypress (Southern Division Champ) and Charter Oak (Southwest Division Semifinalist).
But was the Titans' 2007 nonleague schedule really so flimsy?
Upon second review, the Titans were in the middle of the pack in preseason schedule difficulty strictly going on records alone, which begs at least a couple of questions?
How difficult should a preseason be? And how much does a nonleague schedule matter for league and the postseason?
Here are the overall records and winning percentages of the preseason schedules of our local schools this past season.
1. *Whittier Christian (39-17-1) .690
2. *La Mirada (30-19-1) .610
3. *St. Paul (47-34) .580
4. *Schurr (30-27) .530
5. *La Habra (27-29) .480
6. Pioneer (26-29). 470
7. Montebello (26-30) .460
8. *Santa Fe (25-29) .460
9. *El Rancho (24-31) .440
10. Whittier (22-31) .420
11. *La Serna (18-34) .350
12. *California (18-35) .340
13. *Cantwell-Sacred Heart (21-42) .333
* signifies playoff team
Any surprises?
PS - I heard Coach Juarez was taking over the girls softball team. Maybe he can show off the moves he displayed at a recent Whittier College reunion game. Good Luck coach!

who is ben negrete? was at sure under coach dick? what about the la mirada job?
Just Wondering....
Maybe it will be Dusan Ancich?????
Ben Negrete named the new schurr high football head coach
Hey Murray or Campa, just heard Schurr High has made their decision on the new head coach, can you confirm? and who is he?
Hey, incase anyone is interested I was just looking over the CIF website under coaches wanted and there is an opening dated 01/15/08 for a varsity head football coach at Cerritos.
What did Dusan Ancich get ran out of town again???????

I just heard through the St Paul Grapevine that the Willigs have a relative/nephew (by marraige) that is a freshman and was on the Frosh. team...and that he has good lineman skills...does anyone know who he is..just interested. Go Swordsman!!!
the new coach at schurr will be Randy Sanchez...and i bet he will bring his old teammate back to run the offense>>>Joe JOrdan
One of the Whittier coaches told me monday that Whittier dropped,
Verbum Dei for Warren
So. El Monte for LA Roosevelt
Katella for Firebaugh
Whittier Christian for still looking for game.
THANK YOU, Thank you. For someone finally mentioning something bout boys bball!!! Mr. Murray, just because La Serna is having a poor season doesn't mean you have to ignore our other area boys teams. Derrick Williams is by far the best talent in the area since...Heck I can't remember when the last time we had a local being recruited by USC and UCLA!!! Jordan Sachs and Ryan Kelly are pg studs. Hopefully next year both boys with be approached by recruits.
Don't shy away from LM because the only games you or your reps have attended have both accounted for losses Mr. Murray. LM has defeated some key opponents (El Toro High, La Habra, Mayfair@Mayfair High) and once Ryan Kelly is fully healthy, LM will be back at the top of their game. Give some love to the La Mirada and La Habra boys!!!
I hear Cal Hi football will be dumping Games with Basset, El Monte and Buena Park. If this is true than Coach Arnold is serious about building a solid program. It would be nice maybe to get a Div 1 school scheduled. Lets play Orange - Lutheran. Cypress has already scheduled Mater Dei. To be the best you must play the best.
i agree with basketball fan.. high school football is over
Does anyone know who the new Schurr Coach will be????
Kudos to Coach Juarez. Good luck next year.
Those totals while nice are very misleading when you leave out what division the teams are. How beneficial can it be beating a team with a winning record each year in a higher division? That being said you “fan” are sadly mistaken in thinking that Pioneer had a tougher preseason schedule then SF. And CIF seemed to disagree with you as well in leaving the Titan out of the playoffs.
Its about time someone said something...im sick of hearing about the "DEL RIO LEAGUE" football drama which is all pointless anyway, i mean, who cares about preseason football schedules from last season in JANUARY???? let's get real here, no area teams outside of La Habra will ever win CIF again in football for some time, cal high is a one and done, la serna was more overrated than ohio state's 1-loss season, SF sucked, Pioneer sucked, Whittier sucked, and el rancho is what it is, el rancho.
On the other hand, we have some serious basketball contenders in the area (La Habra, La Mirada, Glendora) and all you want to do is post up stories about absolutely nothing, and run front page articles about St. Paul and Whittier boys bball, when these guys wont even make it to double digits in the win column ever.
Wake up staff, Derrick Williams is one of the top 10 players CIF, and hes right down the street, and you cant find 30 seconds to write a blurb about the games? Jordan Sachs? ever heard of him? or is drew harris' sub .500 cal hi team the spotlight of the area? hmm, makes you wonder. take some notes from the register and press telegram, it takes a minute to say something small about individual games in the area, give it a shot guys!
Mr. Murray or Mr. Campa, can one of you guys please tell me why you have not posted a blog with just boys basketball? You've done boys and girls soccer, but no boys basketball? or even girls basketball? It would be nice if you posted a blog on boys and girls basketball. Thanks
This is great Mr. Campa! This shows that Pioneer had the toughest pre season schedule in the Del Rio League. So much for Santa Fe having a tough schedule
