Amat Hires Its News Coach
This was taken directly from the San Gabriel Valley Tribunes' website from Prep Sports Editor Fred Robledo, a friend of the paper.
I know how much the St. Paul community likes to keep up to date with what's going on with its arch rival.
"Breaking News: Bishop Amat hires Steve Hagerty to take over football program"
"Bishop Amat named Steve Hagerty as its next head football coach, succeeding coach Mark Verti, who resigned in January. Hagerty is a 1980 graduate of Bishop Amat, and later returned to the school as an assistant under former coach Mark Paredes. Hagerty left Amat to become the head coach at Paraclete High School, where he won three CIF-SS Divisional titles, then left in 2000 to become an assistant with Paredes at J.W. North High School. In 2002 Hagerty became the head coach at North after Paredes moved on, and led North to the CIF finals. He left North to become the head coach at Riverside Poly, where his children attended school. After four unsuccessful years at Poly (10-27-3), he resigned to become the offensive coordinator at Citrus Hill, who won the 2007 East Valley Division title.
There will be more in tomorrow's paper with reaction from coach Hagerty."

89SP Alumni,
Division 111 schools don't give out athletic scholarships. Maybe coach G does not have the pull coach A had, regardless coaches should be the champion for these kids. I saw about five other kids that should have had offers as well, who knows maybe in the works.
Let me attempt to clear the air.
I personally attending a meeting with the AD and a member of the coaching staff regarding the Clearing House requirements for possible scholarships. All student-athletes and parents were invited to attend. The SP staff does a good job to prepare its student-athletes AND parents to prepare for college academics, college athletics, and possible scholarships. And their focus is not only on the football program. All sports programs were given the same priority and discussion at the meeting.
Big Unk: You are speculating about bad grades and you shouldn't. I do infact know that some of the other athletes (not Tardy or Grigsby) are given scholarships to less 'popular' DI schools and even DII and DIII.
Hope this helped...
Big Unk,
SPHS has a history of letting some quality F-ball players fall by the wayside, without putting much promotion behind them, once their eligibility is up.
The only way to make sure standouts get a scholarship is to have someone on staff up to date on clearing house requirements.
I'm not sure they have any one in that role, whether it be on the coaching staff or in the counseling dept.
Big Unk,
Always looking for a way to spread your venom aren't you?
Our boys will be fine. They will land somewhere.
Can someone explain to me how only one SP football player has signed with a college. In my opinion they should have had at least 5 or 6 kids with scholarships. The only thing I can think of is bad grades.Or maybe this football program lacks the means to expose the tallents and acomplishments of players not named Grigsby or Tardy. It would be a shame if the coach or coaches did'nt do the things that coaches are supposed to do to get their boys recognized. It almost casts shadow on what was a very special season.Hopefully some these boys will get an offfer somewhere before the signing period ends in Feb.Come on SP you can do better than that.
does anyone knwo where Coach Paredes is coaching now, if he is still coaching?
